Sharukh Khan: Actor Shah Rukh Khan became the first Indian actor to deliver Technology, Entertainment, Design (TED) at Vancouver, Canada. He spoke on various issues beginning from his startdom to the changes world has experienced with the introduction of internet. Shah Rukh Khan also partnered with TED to host the hindi version of the famous talk show.
- Vinod Khanna: Renowned actor and BJP MP from Gurdaspur, Vinod Khanna’s passed away on 27th April. His career spanned five decades and over 140 films; Khanna began his journey as a villain in the 1968 movie “Mann Ka Meet”. He continued to play villainous and supportive roles in his initial years in films such as "Purab Aur Paschim", "Aan Milo Sajna", "Sachaa Jhutha" and "Mera Gaon Mera Desh".
His first break as a hero was in Gulzar's 1971 film "Mere Apne", where he stood out as a disillusioned young man. Some of his other prominent films include “Dayavaan”, “Chandni”,” Nehle pe Dehla”, "Amar Akbar Anthony", "Parvarish", "Reshma Aur Shera", "Muqaddar Ka Sikandar", "Zameer", "Hera Pheri" and "Khoon Paseena".
Vinod Khanna chose Punjab’s Gurdaspur to make his political debut in 1997 when he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. He fought and won Gurdaspur parliamentary constituency in all elections except the 2009 Lok Sabha polls. Rodrigo Duterte: Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte has won Time magazine's readers' poll of the 100 most influential people in the world. Duterte, who has made lewd remarks against the US, its former president Barack Obama and several others, received 5 per cent of the total "yes" votes in the poll which closed on 16th April.
- 53 Indians in Forbes' Super Achievers Under 30 List
Over 50 Indians, including gymnast Dipa Karmakar, Olympic medallist Sakshi Malik, are among Forbes' list of super achievers from Asia under the age of 30 who are "pushing boundaries of innovation.
India has 53 achievers on the list, second only to China which has 76 honourees.
23-year-old Tripura girl Dipa Karmakar, the first Indian woman gymnast to ever compete in the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro last year and the first Indian gymnast to compete in 52 years
Fellow athlete Sakshi Malik became the first Indian woman wrestler to win a medal in Olympics, where she bagged the bronze. Forbes noted that Malik, who hails from a small Indian town Rohtak, faced a lot of local opposition to her desire to wrestle when she took up the sport at age 12. - Vijay Mallya: Indian businessman Vijay Mallya, who has been declared a proclaimed offender, was on 18th April arrested in London by Scotland Yard on India's request for his extradition.
Liquor businessman, wanted in India for defaulting on loans, appeared before the Westminster's Magistrates' Court in London for his bail hearing where the court has granted bail to him. Mallya, whose now-defunct Kingfisher Airlines owes more than Rs 9,000 crore to various banks, had fled India on March 2, 2016.
In January, an Indian court ordered a consortium of lenders to start the process of recovering the loans. India had given a formal extradition request for Mallya as per the Extradition Treaty between India and the UK through a note verbale on February 8.
Earlier in January this year, a CBI court had issued a non-bailable warrant against Mallya in the Rs 720-crore IDBI Bank loan default case. - Narayan Sanyal: A top ranking leader of the outlawed Communist Party of India-Maoist [CPI-Maoist], Narayan Sanyal passed away on 17th April. Sanyal was the Polit Bureau member of the CPI-Maoist at the time of his arrest in 2005 and perhaps the second most important leader after the party’s national secretary, Muppalla Lakshmana Rao.
- Narendra Modi: PM Narendra Modi and Paytm founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma are two Indians named in TIME magazine's 100 Most Influential People list. Modi achieved this feat for the third time in the last four years, having featured on the list in 2014 and 2015. Vijay Shekhar Sharma featured in 'Titans' list which includes Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos.

Over a year after former Indian Navy officer Kulbhushan Jadhav, was arrested, a military court in Pakistan has sentenced him to death for “espionage and subversive activities”, triggering a sharp reaction from India which called it “premeditated murder”.
The Pakistan Army announced that its chief, General Qamar Ahmed Bajwa, on 10th April approved Jadhav’s execution after a Field General Court Martial found him “guilty of all charges”. Over the last one year, New Delhi has submitted a note verbal to Islamabad “13 times” for “consular access” — the first step towards establishing the identity of an Indian national and providing legal aid — but the Pakistan government denied the request. - Achim Steiner named as new administrator of the UNDP
UN chief Antonio Guterres has named a German with extensive experience at the world organization, Achim Steiner, as the new administrator of the UN Development Programme (UNDP). Headquartered in New York City, the UNDP seeks to reduce poverty, improve social development and encourage women's empowerment. - Venkaiah Naidu released a book "Gandhi in Champaran"
Union Minister for Information & Broadcasting Venkaiah Naidu released a book "Gandhi in Champaran" by DG Tendulkar printed by Publications Division. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi released a book Matoshree authored by Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, in Parliament House. The book covers the life and times of Devi Ahilyabai Holkar.
The play was organized by Avirat group of Indore, Madhya Pradesh and was directed by Rajan Deshmukh. The play Matoshree divided in fifteen scenes wherein the author has depicted the struggles, predicaments and qualities of Devi Ahilyabai Holkar with great sensitivity and understanding right from the time when she came in as daughter-in-law of Subedar Malhar Rao Holkar. - Narendra Modi becomes the most followed world leader
Prime Minister Narendra Modi becomes the most followed world leader on social networking site Instagram, with a whopping 6.9 million followers; PM beats US President Donald trump who has 6.3 million followers. A 1982 batch senior IPS Officer Geeta Johari has been appointed as new Director General of Police of Gujarat. She will replace P.P. Pande; she is the first woman Director General of Police of Gujarat. She will retire in November 2017.
- Lenin Moreno won in Ecuador Presidential election
Ecuadorean leftist Lenin Moreno won presidential election after a tight contest with his right-wing opponent. According to the council, Moreno pocketed 51.16 per cent of valid votes versus 48.84 per cent for conservative challenger Guillermo Lasso, with 99.65 per cent of votes counted. - B.P. Bibhu Prasad Kanungo of Odisha took over as the Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India. - Rajiv Kumar Chander appointed as India’s Permanent representative to UNO
Rajiv Kumar Chander was appointed India’s ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations Offices in Geneva, the Ministry of External Affairs announced. Chander belongs to the Indian Foreign Services (IFS) batch of 1983. He is the Consul General of India in Vancouver at present, a post he has held since August 2015.
He has degrees in History and Law. He was the deputy permanent representative with the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations, Geneva, between 2006 and 2009. Chander served as India's Ambassador to Ukraine from July 2011 to July 2015. He will succeed Ajit Kumar at the Geneva office. - Aleksandar Vucic has won in Serbian Presidential election
Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic has won a clear victory in the country's presidential election. He won about 55%, well above the threshold to avoid a run-off, with most results counted. His closest challenger, Sasa Jankovic, polled 16%, while satirical candidate Ljubisa Preletacevic came third with 9% of the vote. He became prime minister after his pro-EU nationalist Progressive Party won a landslide victory in early parliamentary elections in 2014. - RBI appointed Malvika Sinha as Executive Director
The Reserve Bank of India has appointed Malvika Sinha as Executive Director (ED). As Executive Director, Smt. Sinha will look after Foreign Exchange Department, Department of Government and Bank Accounts and Internal Debt Management Department.
She holds a Masters Degree from University of Bombay and has done her Master’s in Public Administration. She is also a Certificated Associate of Indian Institute of Bankers. - Yousafzai Malala selected as U.N. messenger of peace
Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has selected Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai to be a U.N. messenger of peace, the highest honor bestowed by the U.N. chief on a global citizen.
Yousafzai became the youngest-ever Nobel laureate in 2014, when she was recognized for her advocacy of the right of all children to education. Her campaign led to a Taliban assassination attempt near her home in northwest Pakistan that left her severely wounded. She went to Britain for medical treatment and now goes to school there. - Vishal Amin and Neomi Rao appointed for Key US administrative positions
US President Donald Trump has nominated two Indian-Americans for key administrative posts to coordinate US law-enforcement strategy around copyright, patents and trademarks and oversee his plan to eliminate 75% of federal regulations.
Indian-Americans Vishal Amin and Neomi Rao will be Trump's new IP and regulatory czars, respectively, as he nominated them on while making many administrative appointments. Amin has been nominated to be the Intellectual Property Enforcement Coordinator while Rao will be the Administrator of the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA).
