  • G. Venkatswamy: G. Venkatswamy, senior-most Congress leader from undivided Andhra Pradesh, died on 22nd December

    Jyothsna Suri: Chairperson of the Bharat Hotels Ltd Dr Jyotsna Suri and Chairman and Managing Director of Zydus Cadila – Cadila Healthcare Ltd Pankaj R Patel, today took over as president and vice-president respectively of Ficci. Dr Suri has become the second woman after Naina Lal Kidwai to head the leading industry body.The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) is an association of business organizations in India. Established in 1927, on the advice of Mahatma Gandhi by GD Birla and Purushottam Das Thakurdas, it is the largest, oldest and the apex business organisation in India. It is a non-government, not-for-profit organisation. It is headquartered in the national capital New Delhi and has presence in 11 states in India and 8 countries across the world.
  • B.N. Srikrishna: Finance minister Arun Jaitley has got on board former Supreme Court Judge, Justice B N Srikrishna, to vet and help finalise a uniform Indian Financial Code (IFC), which seeks to replace a multitude of laws and rules related to the country’s financial sector, and move a step closer to putting in place a new regulatory framework for the Indian financial markets.

    Justice Srikrishna headed a committee — the Financial Sector Legislative Reforms Commission (FSLRC) — which has already worked out a draft code as part of its final report which was submitted to the government in March 2013.
  • K Balachander: Acclaimed filmmaker K Balachander, passed away on 23rd December. He introduced to film industry stars like Rajni Kanth, Kamal Hassan, Prakash Raj. Balachander made his debut in cinema with Tamil film 'Neerkumizhi', based on his play in 1965. Late comedian Nagesh had portrayed the poignant role of a cancer patient in the film.

    His 'Sindhu Bhairavi' was a brilliant portrayal of a yearning for intellectual companionship by the protagonist and the intricate relationship problems that came with it.

    Born on July 9, 1930 at Nannilam in the then composite Thanjavur District (now Thiruvarur), Balachander directed films in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi. He wrote, directed and produced more than 100 films in his long career, launching more than 65 actors, actresses and technicians in the Tamil film industry.
  • Malik Ishaq: Malik Ishaq, chief of the banned terror outfit Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, was released on 23rd December after the Pakistan government did not seek an extension of his detention. The outfit carried out attacks on the minority Shias and the high-profile assault on the Sri Lankan cricket team in 2009.
  • Bhattacharya: Senior IAS officer S. Bhattacharya has been appointed as the Chairman and Managing Director of Coal India Ltd. (CIL). The coal major was without a full time chief for the past six months. The Public Enterprises Selection Board had last month recommended the name of Mr. S. Bhattacharya, a 1985 batch IAS officer, for the post of Chairman and Managing Director of CIL. Mr. Bhattacharya takes over the charge from Additional Secretary (Coal) A. K. Dubey, who was given the additional charge as CMD of CIL from June 26. Mr. Bhattacharya, is currently the CMD of Singareni Collieries Company.
  • Raghuvar Das: The BJP on 26th December has chosen Raghuvar Das, the first non-tribal, to be the new chief minister of Jharkhand in 14 years since it was carved out of Bihar. 
    • That Jharkhand is to get its first non-tribal Chief Minister since its formation in 2000
    • Raghuvar Das would not have been the automatic choice of the Bharatiya Janata Party for the top post in the State if former Chief Minister and tribal leader Arjun Munda had won from his Kharsawan constituency. Das, a five-time Member of the Legislative Assembly and former Deputy Chief Minister.

  • Alok Kumar: Alok Kumar, an IAS officer of the 1984 batch, has been made Secretary, Central Vigilance Commission.
    Anant Kumar Singh has been appointed Additional Secretary in the Home Ministry, whereas Raghvendra Singh has been made Additional Secretary, Department of Agriculture and Cooperation.

    While T. Vijayakumar is now Director-General, Council for Advancement of People’s Action and Rural Technology, M.J. Joseph has been placed as Director-General, Bureau of Indian Standards and D.V. Prasad as Additional Secretary in the Women and Child Development Ministry.

    Deepak Kumar has been appointed Additional Secretary in the Labour Ministry, Deepak Shetty is now Director-General (Shipping) and Vijaya Shrivastava is Additional Secretary and Financial Adviser to the Health Ministry.

    Ajay Narayan Jha is Additional Secretary with the Department of Expenditure and Alok Shrivastava is Additional Secretary with the Shipping Ministry.
  • Satya Nadella: He is the CEO of Microsoft. He met Prime Minister, Finance Minister and IT Minister on 26th December. He pledged support to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Digital India initiative.

    This was his second visit to India since taking over as global CEO of $86-billion technology giant Microsoft. Microsoft was keen on collaborating with the government in providing last mile Internet connectivity, especially through the Wi-Fi technology, the statement added.
  • NDMA appointments
    The government on 21st December approved appointment of a scientist, an army man and a UN expert on disaster reduction as members of the revamped NDMA

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the names of Kamal Kishore, a disaster reduction expert at the United Nations Development Programme, Lt Gen N C Marwah (retired), and D N Sharma, Director of Health, Safety and Environment Group at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre
    • Kishore is the New York-based adviser on disaster reduction and recovery at the UNDP and has been handling crisis prevention.
    • Sharma has been associated with NDMA for several years, helping the body draft guidelines for safety in radiation- related areas.
    • Lt Gen Marwah was the Chief of Integrated Defence Staff to the Chairman, Chiefs of Staff Committee prior to his retirement.

  • Lamothe: Haiti's Prime Minister Lamothe has resigned, after violent anti-government protests over delayed elections. Protesters had called for President Michel Martelly and Mr. Lamothe to resign
  • Rolene Strauss: The 22-year-old beauty Rolene Strauss was crowned onstage at the competition's grand final at the Excel London ICC Auditorium on 14th December. Strauss belongs to South Africa

    Strauss was among 122 contestants who competed for the coveted title this year.
  • Runner-ups
    Hungary: Edina Kulcsár, a former finalist of the 2009 Miss Plastic Hungary beauty pageant. The contest featured contestants who had plastic surgery and aimed to promote the benefits of cosmetic procedures.

    United States: Elizabeth Safrit, who represented North Carolina at the 2014 Miss United States pageant, has a BA in political science from the University of Southern California and has been dancing since she was little.
  • Chakri: Noted Telugu music director Chakri (40) passed away on 15th December. Chakri hailed from Warangal district and began his career with Puri Jagannath's Baachi.
  • Vivek Murthy: Indian-American physician Vivek Hallegere Murthy has been confirmed as the 19th Surgeon General of America by US Senate. He is youngest person and first person of Indian-origin to hold the post. The upper house of US Congress confirmed Murthy's nomination by 51 votes to 43 more than year after President Barack Obama had nominated him to this top administration post on public health issues in November 2013 which saw a strong opposition from the powerful pro-gun lobby National Rifle Association (NRA).

    He is the first ever Indian-American to occupy the post. Regarding the tasks at hand for Murthy: Combined with the crucial support for fighting Ebola included in the bill to fund our government next year
  • Tashi Malik and Nungshi Malik:They are twins, they created record in climbing mountains. By scaling Mount Vinson, Antarctica’s highest mountain at 4,892 metres, they have become the world’s first twins and siblings to climb the highest peaks on the seven continents. The 23-year-old twins accomplished their “Mission 2 for 7” on 16th December when they conquered the mountain.

    The mission, which they have dedicated to the cause of the Indian girl child, started by conquering Mt. Kilimanjaro in February 2012.

    The mission progressed as they conquered Mt. Everest in May 2013; Mt. Elbrus in August 2013; Mt. Aconcagua in January 2014; Mt. Carstensz Pyramid in March 2014; and Mt. McKinley in June 2014.
  • Amit Priyavadan Mehta: Indian-American Amit Priyavadan Mehta has been confirmed by the US Senate as a Federal judge in the District of Columbia, becoming the first Asian Pacific American to occupy this vital position.

    Nominated by the US President, Barack Obama in July this year, Mehta has been a partner at Zuckerman Spaeder Law Firm since 2010, where he represents clients in civil and criminal matters before the State and Federal courts.

    Mehta’s nomination was cleared on 17th December night by a voice vote along with over a dozen pending judicial nominations.
  • Libby Lane: Reverend Libby Lane has been announced as the first female bishop for the Church of England, just a month after a historic change to canon law. She will become the new Bishop of Stockport, a post that has been vacant since May.
  • R P Singh: R P Singh, the former CAG official who questioned the “notional loss” figure of Rs 1.76 lakh crore in the 2G spectrum allocations died on 15th December. Singh, who belonged to Indian Accounts and Audit Service, was director general of Post and Telegram, which conducted the 2G Spectrum Audit in 2010.
  • Shyam Srinivasan: Federal Bank Managing Director and CEO Shyam Srinivasan has been made Chairman of Indian Banks Association’s committee on member private sector banks. The committee has 13 top functionaries of private banks as its members and it takes care of the interests of the 23 private-sector bank members of the IBA.
  • R K Srivastava: R K Srivastava, a 1984-batch Jharkhand-cadre IAS officer, was on 19th December appointed as the Chairman of the Airports Authority of India (AAI) for a five-year period.
  • Rajinder Khanna: Rajinder Khanna will be the new chief of the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW). He will replace Alok Joshi whose tenure will end on 30th of this month. Mr. Khanna will have have two years tenure. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet headed by Prime Minister has approved his name for the post. The RAW is the primary external intelligence agency of India.

    In an another decision, the committee has also approved the appointment of senior IPS officer Prakash Mishra as the new Director General of Central Reserve Police Force

    The Appointments Committee of Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi cleared Khanna, a 1978 batch RAS cadre, for the post of RAW chief for a period of two years from December 31 after incumbent Alok Joshi retires. Khanna's batchmate Arvind Saxena been shifted as head of Aviation Research Centre (ARC).

    Saxena, a 1978 batch RAS cadre, will be Director of ARC which carries out aerial surveillance of the borders using its unmanned aerial vehicles and other flying machines including MIG and helicopters.

    ARC has also the responsibility with IAF to transport Special Frontier Force (SFF) commandos. Saxena will hold the charge till August next year.

    CRPF is the mainstay for anti-Naxal operations and Mishra has himself spearheaded the battle when he was DGP of Odisha.

    The Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW or RAW) is the primary foreign intelligence agency of India. It was created after the Sino-Indian War 1962 and Indo-Pakistani War of 1965 which exposed gaps in intelligence gathering undertaken by the Intelligence Bureau (which until then handled both domestic and foreign intelligence). This convinced the Government of India that a specialised, independent agency was required for foreign intelligence gathering. Thus R&AW was formed in September 1968 under the guidance of its first Director, Rameshwar Nath Kao.
  • Anurag Jain: Senior IAS officer Anurag Jain was on 10 December 2014 appointed as the Joint Secretary in Prime Minister's Office (PMO) of India.
  • Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed: Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed of Mauritania was on 11 December 2014 appointed as the new head of the UN Mission for Ebola Emergency Response (UNMEER). His appointment was confirmed by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
  • Nedunuri Krishnamurthy: Doyen of Carnatic music Nedunuri Krishnamurthy, passed away on 8th December. Born in 1927 at Pithapuram in East Godavari district, he joined the Maharaja College of Music and Dance at Vizianagaram for a diploma in violin in 1940. His guru Dwaram Narasinga Rao Naidu suggested him to pursue vocal instead of violin and that put Nedunuri in his element. Later, he learnt Carnatic vocal under the tutelage of Sripada Pinakapani.

    He was instrumental in opening the Department of Music in Andhra University. He was a recipient of a string of prestigious awards including the coveted Sangeetha Kalanidhi. He served as Asthana Vidwan for Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams and the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham.
  • Ralph H. Baer: He is the inventor of home video game system. He passed away on 6th December.
  • Modi: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is the winner of this year’s reader poll for TIME Person of the Year, but his name does not figure in the magazine editors’ own list of final eight. This year’s possible winners include Apple CEO Tim Cook, Alibaba founder Jack Ma, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Iraqi Kurdish President Massoud Barzani and singer Taylor Swift.

    The list also includes groups of individuals, like the Ebola caregivers and the protesters in Ferguson, Missouri. The TIME editors’ choice of the person who has had the biggest influence on the news within the past year will be announced on 10th December.

    In the final tally of the reader poll, Mr. Modi received more than 16 percent of the almost five million votes cast. Protesters who took to the streets in Ferguson, Missouri, after the police shooting of an unarmed black teenager finished second.

    Hong Kong protest leader Joshua Wong, Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai and the doctors and nurses treating Ebola rounded out the top five.
  • Ebola survivors, doctors named 'person of the year' by time: Time magazine named those fighting Ebola its 2014 "Person of the Year," applauding the work of medical relief teams, doctors, nurses, ambulance drivers and burial teams working in Western Africa, where an outbreak of the virus has killed thousands.

    The magazine pictured five people on its covers, including: Jerry Brown, a Liberian surgeon; Salome Karwah, an Ebola survivor whose parents died from the disease; and Kent Brantly, an American missionary who became infected while in Liberia.

    Ebola has killed 6,331 people out of 17,800 cases in the latest outbreak, almost all in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea, according to the United Nations' World Health Organization. The current death rate is estimated to be about 70 per cent of all cases.
  • Merkel: German Chancellor Angela Merkel was re-elected unopposed on 8th December as chief of Conservative party. Merkel, who is nearing a decade in power said, Germany under her government was a prosperous and respected country with a successful industrial base, strong social and environmental standards and low unemployment.
  • Richard Rahul Verma: Richard Rahul Verma was on 10th December unanimously confirmed as the next US Ambassador to India by the Senate, making him the first-ever Indian-American to hold the post. The Senate raced through his nomination process ahead of more than 50 ambassadorial nominations to make sure that he is in New Delhi when US President Barack Obama travels to India to be the chief guest at the Republic Day parade on January 26.

    He will replace Nancy Powell, who resigned in March after a damaging row over the treatment of diplomat Devyani Khobragade over visa fraud charges. The US Embassy in New Delhi is currently headed by charge d'affaires Kathleen Stephens.

    Verma is currently a senior counsellor at Steptoe & Johnson law firm and the Albright Stonebridge Group a business advisory company led by former US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright.
  • Ziad Abu Ein: Ziad Abu Ein, a senior Palestinian Minister died after attacked by soilders of Israeli Defence Force at a protest in the occupied West Bank. He was, Minister without portfolio in the Palestinian Authority government, was hit by the Israeli soilders.
  • Vivek Srivastava: The Appointments Committee of Cabinet on 10th December approved Gujarat-cadre Indian Police Service officer Vivek Srivastava’s name for the next chief of the Special Protection Group (SPG), which provides security to the Prime Minister, former prime ministers and their families. The 1989-batch police officer, who has been on central deputation, is currently posted at Intelligence Bureau.
  • Dineshwar Sharma: Dineshwar Sharma, a Bihar-born, Kerala-cadre Indian Police Service officer of the 1979 batch, will be the new chief of the Intelligence Bureau. Mr. Sharma, succeeds Syed Asif Ibrahim, who retires on December 31.

    The Intelligence Bureau (IB) is India's internal intelligence agency and reputedly the world's oldest intelligence agency. It was recast as the Central Intelligence Bureau in 1947 under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
  • Randhir Singh: Randhir Singh was appointed as an honorary member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). He was appointed as the honorary member during the IOC session in Monaco held from 8 December 2014 to 9 December 2014.
Veenapani Chawla: Veenapani Chawla, passed away. She was an actor, director, choreographer, writer and composer. She founded the Adishakti Laboratory for Theatre Art Research in Pondicherry to promote research into the creation of new performance methodologies. Since then, she has presented many papers on the subject, and has scripted and directed several of Adishakti’s performances. She is an exponent in Mayurbhanj Chhau, Kalaripayattu, Koodiyattam and Dhrupad singing. Among the awards she has received are the Zee Astiva Award in 2006 and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Puruskar in 2010.

Mallya: Vijay Mallya on 1st December resigned as chairman of Mangalore Chemicals & Fertilizers Ltd (MCF). Separately, the Union Ministry of Corporate Affairs refused to clear his application for reappointment as Managing Director of the grounded Kingfisher Airlines, citing lack of lender and shareholder approval for the move. As of now, Mallya remains the Chairman of United Spirits Ltd, United Breweries, UB Holdings and UB Engineering.

Anil Sinha:
 Senior IPS officer Anil Kumar Sinha was on 2nd December appointed the new CBI Director to succeed Ranjit Sinha. Sinha, a 1979 batch IPS officer of Bihar cadrde, was the Special Director in CBI.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, cleared the name of Anil Kumar Sinha who was among the candidates shortlisted by the search committee earier this evening. The term of Sinha will be for two years from the date he takes charge, an official notification said.

The panel discussed the names of about 40 officers shortlisted by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), sources said.

Antulay: Former union minister and Maharashtra's first Muslim chief minister A.R. Antulay died on 2nd December, Known as 'Barrister Antulay', he was the state's first Muslim chief minister from June 1980-Jan 1982. He was appointed by late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

He served as a union minister in 1995 and later in the UPA-I government of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Lahiri: The government on 3rd December set up a committee under the chairmanship of former chief economic advisor Ashok Lahiri to regularly interact with industry and ascertain areas where clarity on tax laws is required. The committee, which will have a one-year term, will give half-yearly reports to the finance minister.

The committee will be assisted by two nodal officers not below joint secretary/commissioner rank — one each from income tax and Customs & central excise. The choice of nodal officers will be recommended by CBDT and CBEC, and the appointment will be made after the revenue secretary’s approval.

Former finance minister, P Chidambaram, had also set up a high-level forum under his advisor, Parthasarathi Shome, to address some of the taxation-related concerns of industry.

The forum had identified 29 issues in direct taxes and 47 in indirect taxes that merited removal of obstacles, and clarifications or amendment of procedures. Issues pertaining to service tax refunds, Cenvat credit and excise duty levy on sale of goods at loss were addressed by the finance ministry on the basis of the forum’s recommendations.

D.K. Mittal: To chalk out a clear vision for the Indian Railways and align Budget announcements with it, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu has formed a committee under D K Mittal, former secretary, financial services. The committee, which would suggest ways of improving railway finances, has a tight deadline of December 21 to summit its report.

Two members from Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and Mckinsey India would also be members on the panel. The terms of reference include studying the efficacy and sufficiency of the existing revenue structure and avenues for raising revenues besides identifying leakages of revenue.

This is the second committee formed by Prabhu within a month of taking charge as railway minister on November 10. He had roped in E Sreedharan, principal advisor to Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and its former managing director, last month for suggesting ways of improving railway tendering. Suggesting greater delegation of powers to general managers (GM) and divisional railway managers (DRM), Sreedharan has already submitted an interim report to Prabhu.

VR Krishna Iyer: The legendary jurist V.R. Krishna Iyer, who took up the cause of the poor and the underprivileged and the father of Public Interest Litigation, passed away on 4th December

Justice Iyer is known for a jurisprudence that stood out for its emphasis on reforming the criminal justice system, for landmark judgments, and for the environmental struggles.

  • He was the Cabinet Minister in Kerala, during his time as Law Minister Kerala introduced land reforms. He was also former judge in the Supreme Court of India.
  • He was born at Vaidyanathapuram near Palakkad, in Malabar region of Kerala
  • In 1952, he was elected to the Kerala Legislative Assembly on behalf of Communist Party; in 1957, he became a minister in the first Communist government in Kerala, serving until 1959. Having been the minister of law, power, prisons, irrigation and social welfare in the Government of Kerala, he was instrumental in bringing about many significant changes in these sectors. In 1973, he was sworn in as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India;
Narendra Modi: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was named "Asian of the Year" on 5th December by a Singapore press group to mark the significant impact his landslide election victory has had on the region. Last year, the award was shared by President Xi Jinping of China and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe of Japan. The inaugural award, in 2012, went to Prime Minister Thein Sein of Myanmar.

Ashton Carter: US President Obama nominated Ashton Carter as the Defence Secretary. Carter, has served in Obama’s administration, in particular at the Pentagon, in various capacities — the last being that of the Deputy Secretary of Defence from October 2011 to December 2013. During that period he was also the Pentagon’s point person on India, launching the path-breaking Defence Trade and Technology Initiative (DTTI).

Asha Bhat: Miss India Supranational, Asha Bhat has bagged the Miss Supranational 2014 title. Earlier in the pageant, Asha bagged the best talent award during the talent round, where Miss Gabon and Miss Estonia was placed 2nd and 3rd respectively.
