  • Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Madan Mohan Malviya: Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Late Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya will be honored with Bharat Ratna, the country's highest civilian award. The announcement to confer the award on Mr.Vajpayee has been made on the eve of his 90th birthday on 25th December, which is being celebrated as Good Governance Day.

    Mr. Atal Bihari Vajpayee's first stint as Prime Minister in 1996 lasted for 13 days, again he became the Prime Minister for 13 months in 1998 but his government collapsed after J Jayalalithaa withdrew her support from the coalition. In 1999 he became the Prime Minister for the third time. Mr Vajpayee holds the credit of completing full term as the first non-Congress Prime Minister. Mr.Vajpayee was elected to the Lok Sabha nine times, and twice to the Rajya Sabha .

    Madan Mohan Malaviya was an Indian educationist and politician notable for his role in the Indian independence movement and his espousal of Hindu nationalism. He is most remembered as the founder of Banaras Hindu University (BHU) at Varanasi in 1916, the largest residential university in Asia and one of the largest in the world.
  • James Maynard: The 2014 SASTRA-Ramanujan Prize was awarded to James Maynard of Oxford University, England, and the University of Montreal, Canada, at a function held in Sastra Ramanujan Centre on 21st December.

    Mangalam Srinivasan, Special Advisor, Kennedy school of Government in Harvard University and fellow of Certified Trust and Financial Advisor (CFTA), Harvard University, presented the prestigious award to the 27-year-old Maynard.

    According to University James Maynard is being awarded the 2014 Sastra Ramanujan Prize for his revolutionary contributions to prime number theory, for making strongest advances thus far on various long standing problems of primes and for the ingenious techniques he has introduced which influence future research in the field.

    The citation also pointed out James Maynard, who received his Doctorate in Philosophy from Oxford University in 2013, has been a Post-doctoral fellow at the University of Montreal, Canada.

    Shashikiran Shetty: Belgium has conferred the Commander of the Order of Leopold II, one of its highest civilian distinctions, to Shashikiran Shetty, Chairman of Mumbai-based Allcargo Logistics, for his contributions in strengthening the bilateral economic relations. Shetty is also head of Ecu Line of Belgium, which the Indian company took over seven years ago. Karl Van den Bossche, Consul General of Belgium in Mumbai, said in a statement that the decoration is awarded to Shetty for creating a significant economic impact at Antwerp Port by the activities of Ecu Line and Allcargo.
  • Amitabh: Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan was conferred with the 9th ANR National Award Annapurna Studios, in Hyderabad on 27th December. The award, instituted by late Akkineni Nageswara Rao in 2005, is an annual presentation that recognises people for their contribution to the Indian cinema. Previous awardees are Dev Anand, ShabanaAzmi, Anjali Devi, Vyjayantimala Bali, LataMangeshkar, K Balachander, HemaMalini, and ShyamBenegal.
  • Madarkar: Mahajabeen Madarkar won the achievers award on International Day for persons with Disabilities. At the age of three, she she was affected by polio. Inspite of this hinderence she excelled in academics. Ms. Madarkar, a native of Vijayapura district, is now pursuing her Masters in Dermatology.
  • Aishwarya Rai: Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was honoured with a special award at the glittering Miss World 2014 ceremony in London for her charity work. The prize was for her charitable work since being crowned Miss World in 1994.
  • Rachapalem Chandrasekhara Reddy: Telugu writer and critic Rachapalem Chandrasekhara Reddy of Kadapa has been selected for Central Sahitya Akademi Award in Telugu for 2014. A doctorate in Telugu, Chandrasekhara Reddy is presently in charge of C.P. Brown Language Research Centre in Kadapa, was chosen for the award for his book “Mana Navalalu - Mana Kathanikalu”.

    Dr. Reddy penned 13 novels and 11 short stories on many topics including Rayalaseema literary movement, Dalit life, Andhra Kavitvam and Gurajada Kathanikalu. His notable works include Silpa Prabhavathi, Telugu Kavitvam, Nannayya Voravadi and Devude Baludaithe. He has been continuing as Assistant Professor of Telugu in Yogi Vemana University, even after superannuation.
  • Amitabh Bachchan: Amitabh Bachchan has been chosen for the Akkineni Nageswara Rao (ANR) National Award 2014, instituted by the Akkineni International Foundation. It will be given away in the presence of Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao and Union Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu on December 27. Earlier recipients of the award include Dev Anand (2005), Shabana Azmi (2006), Anjali Devi (2007), Vyjayantimala Bali (2008), Lata Mangeshkar (2009), K. Balachander (2010), Hemamalini (2011) and Shyam Benegal (2012).
  • Kailash Satyarthi, Malala Yousafzai got Nobel Peace
    India's Kailash Satyarthi on 10th December received the Nobel Peace Prize for 2014, sharing it with Pakistan's Malala Yousafzai, the youngest ever Nobel laureate, for their pioneering work on promoting child rights in the sub-continent. They received the Prize at a ceremony in Norwegian Capital Oslo.
  • Fidel Castro: Former Cuban leader Fidel Castro has been awarded the Confucius Peace Prize, China's version of the Nobel Prize. Castro, was selected because he made important contributions to eliminating nuclear weapons upon his retirement from the presidency in 2008.
  • Asha Bhosle: Playback singer Asha Bhosle on 10 December 2014 was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 11th Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) held in Dubai. She received the award for her decades of dedication to Indian Film Industry.
  • Ruhi Singh: Ruhi Singh won Miss Universal Peace & Humanity 2014 at Beirut, Lebanon on 10 December 2014.She is the first person to win this pageant from India and she won the pageant among the 145 other countries. She was Femina Miss India East first runner-up in 2011.
IFFI 45th awards: Russian film “Leviathan” directed by Andrey Zvyagintsev won the best film award comprising of the Golden Peacock and Rs. 40 lakh at the 45th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) which ended on 30th November.

Actor Alexey Serebryakov of “Leviathan” won the best male actor award in the ‘Cinema of the World’ competition section at the IFFI . He shared the Rs.10 lakh award with actor Dulal Sarkar of Bengali film “Chotoder Chobi” (A Short Story).

The best director award of Rs. 15 lakhs was bagged by Nadav Lapid, the director of the Israeli film “Haganenet” (The Kindergarten Teacher). Actress Sarit Larry of “Haganenet” received the best female actor award of Rs. 10 lakh along with Alina Cruz of the Cuban film “Conducta” (Behaviour).

The Jury Award of Rs. 15 lakh was bagged by the Marathi Film “Ek Hazarachi Note” (A 100 Rupee Note) by Srihari Sathe.

Ecolibrium Energy’s SmartSense wins UN awardSmartSense, developed by Ahmedabad-based Ecolibrium Energy, has won a prestigious United Nations’ climate solutions award for helping customers with energy savings. SmartSense, is an incubated organisation of the Centre for Innovation, Incubation and Entrepreneurship (CIIE), of Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad (IIM-A).

It has won the 2014 Lighthouse Activity awards under the focus area of Information and Communication Technology (ICT)

The Lighthouse Activity Awards are spearheaded by the UN Climate Change Secretariat to shine a light on some of the best examples of climate solutions and to inspire increased climate action around the world. This year’s winning activities include both large, game-changing solutions and small, entrepreneurial efforts. Teresa Ribera Rodriguez, chair of the Momentum for Change Advisory Panel, said 12 initiatives were shortlisted as true beacons, shining a light on transformational climate action that challenges conventional development.

These activities assist communities, cities, businesses, governments and institutions to move towards a low-carbon, highly resilient future.

Hindustan Times and The Week were presented the International Press Institute — India Award by Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar on 5th December.

The former’s series on acid attacks against women and the latter’s Jammu and Kashmir correspondent Tariq Bhat’s report on the widow village of Dardpora were judged as the winning entries.

Award for FrontlineFrontline magazine of The Hindu Group has been selected as the ‘Most Promising Brand of the Year’ in the Media & Entertainment (English Magazines, India) category by the World Brands Review Corporation, a Noida-based branding organisation. The award will be presented at the World Brands Summit 2014 to be held in Dubai on 6th December.
