  • Padma Awards announced
    Current AffirsPadma awards have been announced. Former Deputy Prime Minister and BJP veteran L K Advani, film stars Amitabh Bachchan and Dilip Kumar and Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal are among the nine personalities who have been selected for Padma Vibhushan this year.

    Twenty personalities including former Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswami, Constitutional expert Subhash Kashyap, lawyer Harish Salve, Microsoft Chief Bill Gates and his wife Melinda will be conferred with Padma Bhushan. Film maker Sanjay Leela Bhansali, script writer Prasoon Joshi, badminton player P V Sindhu and woman cricketer Mithali Raj are among the 75 personalities who have been selected for Padma Shri. The Awards are given in various disciplines including art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports every year on the occasion of Republic Day.

  • Ashok Chakra to be conferred to Late Major Mukund Varadarajan , Naik Neeraj Kumar Singh
    Gallantry awards have been announced on the occasion of Republic Day.13 awards have been announced for Army personnel. These include one Ashok Chakra, three Kirti Chakras and nine Shaurya Chakras. In addition, award of Ashok Chakra posthumously to Major Mukund Varadarajan, which was announced in August last year, will be conferred by the President today. Naik Neeraj Kumar Singh will also be conferred Ashok Chakra posthumously. Late Subedar Ajay Vardhan of 14 Garhwal Rifles will be given Kriti Chakra.

    The country's largest paramilitary force, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has bagged the maximum number of gallantry medals at 36 this Republic Day with eight of these bravery awards being accorded posthumously to the paramilitary personnel.
  • Australia's young cricketer of the year Award
    Sean Abbott has been named Australia's young cricketer of the year. Steve Smith was another winner at Australia's annual cricket awards, receiving the Allan Border Medal and being named both Test and one day player of the year.
  • Periyar Tiger Reserve won award
    The Periyar Tiger Reserve, spread over 925 sq.km. in Kerala, bagged the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) biennial award on 20th January for encouraging local public participation in managing the reserve.There are 75 communities living around the reserve, including tribal people who are dependent on eco-development programmes, said field director of the reserve Amit Mallick.
  • Frank Islam: An eminent Indian-American entrepreneur and philanthropist has been presented with the prestigious Martin Luther King Jr Award in recognition of his contribution to the legacy of the civil rights pioneer through his efforts in international service and civil engagement. Azamgarh-born Frank Islam was given the annual award by the president of the Memorial Foundation, Harry Johnson.
  • Jhumpa Lahiri: Indian-American writer JhumpaLahiri won the USD 50,000 DSC Prize for Literature, one of South Asia's top literary awards for her book 'The Lowland', it was announced at the Jaipur Literature Festival on 22nd January. The Pulitzer Prize winning author's tale of Indian brothers bound by tragedy was also shortlisted for the Man Booker prize last year.The Lowland was Lahiri's first book, but the fourth one to be published. The DSC Prize for South Asian Literature was instituted in 2010 by Surina Narula.
  • Raghuram Rajan awarded ‘Governor of the Year’
    Reserve Bank of India Governor Raghuram Rajan is the ‘Governor of the Year’ in the Central Banking Journal Awards for 2015.

    Rajan was one of three individuals to be honored this year, with former IMF MD Jacques de Larosière winning the lifetime achievement award after a lengthy struggle for monetary order. The Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) scooped the prize for Central Bank of the Year. The judging panel cited Rajan’s disciplined and focused approach to tackling macroeconomic instability as a reason for him winning the award.

  • Honour for MOM team
    The National Space Society based in Washington DC has chosen the ISRO’s Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) team, headed by M. Annadurai, for its 2015 Space Pioneer Award.

    The society announced on 12th January that a representative of the team would be presented the honor in the science and engineering category during its annual international conference in Toronto in May. The society describes itself as “an independent, educational, grassroots, non-profit organization dedicated to the creation of a space-faring civilization

    Amitabh Bachchan: Amitabh Bachchan has been honored with the Social Media Person of the Year award by Internet and Mobile Association of India. The 72-year-old actor, who is an active social media user and online blogger, took the opportunity to thank his online fans, whom he affectionately calls ‘extended family’ for their support. IAMAI presented him with the award at his home as he will not be able to attend the ceremony in Delhi.
  • Mangaluru high-rise wins award
    Planet SKS’, a high-rise building in Mangaluru, has been awarded the ‘Best residential project in tier-II city under the ultra luxury segment’ by CNBC Awaz. Planet SKS is set out on 4.55 acres of land with just 10 per cent ground coverage. The rest of the area is being used as green cover and fitness zone. The project has ground-plus-35 floor residential units.
  • M.Y.S. PRASAD: M.Y.S. Prasad, director of Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota Range (SHAR), has been selected for the Vikram Sarabhai memorial award to be presented by the Indian Science Congress Association (ISCA)

    Dr. Prasad is selected for his outstanding contribution to R&D in the field of space science in his long and chequered career at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). Prior to Dr. Prasad, those who received this award were former ISRO chairmen Dr. Satish Dhawan, Dr. K. Kasturi Rangan, Dr. G. Madhavan Nair and Dr. K. Radhakrishnan.

    The ISCA, which is a premier scientific organization of the country established in 1914 in Kolkata, has been giving this award in alternate years.
  • Peta awards: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and actor Rekha, who both follow a vegetarian diet, have been crowned ‘hottest vegetarian celebrities’ by animal rights organisation PETA India for making plant-based foods more popular than ever in 2014.
    This year’s competition named ‘PETA India’s hottest vegetarian celebrities’ was tougher than ever — but no one was more deserving than Mr. Modi and Ms. Rekha for the title, the organisation said in a release.

    The two winners beat out a strong group of competitors, including actors Amitabh Bachchan, Kangana Ranaut, Hema Malini, Shahid Kapoor, Vidya Balan, R Madhavan and Vidyut Jammwal, it said.
  • GOPALA KRISHNA: Tamil Nadu Governor Rosaiah conferred Sangita Kalanidhi award on musician T.V. Gopalakrishnan, the Sangita Kala Acharya award on musicians Mangad K. Natesan and Alamelu Mani, the TTK award on Malladi Suribabu and Udaiyalur Kalyanaraman and the Musicologist award on Padma Murthy.
