  • President honours 56 eminent personalities with Padma awards
    Current AffirsIndian President Pranab Mukherjee on 28th March honoured 56 eminent personalities with Padma awards at the Civil Investiture Ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

    Mukherjee presented five Padma Vibhushan, eight Padma Bhushan and 43 Padma Shri awards at the function. Former Governor of Jammu and Kashmir Jagmohan, Art of Living founder Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, Indian-American economist Avinash Kamalakar Dixit Renowned dancer Yamini Krishnamurti were honoured with Padma Vibhushan. Founder of Reliance Industries late Dhirubhai Hirachand Ambani was honoured with Padma Vibhushan posthumously.

    Actor Anupam Kher, Badminton star Saina Nehwal, Former Comptroller and Auditor General Vinod Rai, Industrialist Pallonji Mistry, Architect Hafeez Contractor, Senior journalist Dr Barjinder Singh Hamdard, Chemist Alla Venkata Rama Rao, Gastroenterologist D Nageshwar Reddy were given Padma Bhushan. Actor Ajay Devgn, Filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar, Athlete Deepika Kumari, Celebrated chef Mohammed Imtiaz Qureshi, Folk Poet Haldar Nag, Classical musician Pandit Tulsidas Borkar were honoured with Padma Shri.

    The rest of the awardees, including superstar Rajinikanth, actor Priyanka Chopra and tennis star Sania Mirza, will be honoured at a separate function to be held next month.
  • 63rd National Film awards announced; Amitabh, Kangana & Bhansali bag top honours
    The 63rd National Film Awards were announced on 28th March with top honours going to Amitabh Bachchan for the Shoojit Sircar-directed “Piku” and Kangana Ranaut for “Tanu weds Manu Returns”.

    Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali won the best director award for Bajirao Mastani, while SS Rajamouli's magnum opus “Baahubali”bagged the best picture award.

    Amitabh Bachchan has been honoured with the best actor's award for 2015 for his film 'Piku'. Earlier, the legendary actor has won three national awards- in 1990 for 'Agneepath', in 2005 for 'black' and in 2009 for “Paa”.

    Kangna Ranaut has been selected for best actress award for her stupendous performance in the film “Tanu weds Manu returns”. This is Kangna's third national award as an actress.

    Earlier, she bagged the coveted award for best actress for her film 'queen' in 2014 and best supporting actress for the film 'fashion' in 2008.

    Rajamouli's magnum opus, “Baahubali” has been selected as the best feature film for 2015.
    Meanwhile, for the historic drama, “Bajirao Mastani”, Sanjay Leela Bhansali has bagged the Best Director award. “Bajirao Mastani” has been selected for a number of awards in the other categoris as well.

    The film is the top choice for Best Choreography by Remo D'Souza, along with best production design, and best cinematography. Juhi Chaturvedi for “Piku” and Himanshu Sharma for “Tanu weds Manu returns” will share the award for Best Original Screenplay and Dialogue.

    Vishal Bhardwaj has been selected for best adapted screenplay for the film “Talva”'. Gujarat has been declared the most film-friendly state.
  • Krishi Karman Commendation award
    Current Affirs Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented “Krishi Karman Commendation Award 2014-15” to Arunachal Pradesh along with cash award of Rs. one lakh in New Delhi on 19th March.

    The award was received by Agriculture Commissioner Hage Khoda in the inaugural function of “Krishi Unnati Mela”, held at Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), New Delhi.

    Arunachal Pradesh was selected for the award for the consecutive fourth year in total food grain production under category-III states. Arunachal Pradesh has produced 4.09 lakh MT of food grains in 2014-15 as compared to 3.62 lakh MT during 2011-12.
  • Geetakshi Arora: An Indian student, Geetakshi Arora has won the first Noor Inayat Khan prize for 2016, the London-based Noor Inayat Khan Memorial Trust announced on 19th March.

    Geetakshi Arora, a post-graduate student of the South Asia Institute at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, won the prize — which consists of £1,000 and a certificate — for her dissertation on “Goddess Myths in Graphic Novels: Reimagining Indian Feminity.” The Trust awards the annual prize to a post-graduate student from SOAS, University of London, working in the area of gender studies and South Asian history.

    Of Indian descent, Noor Inayat was a secret agent in the Second World War, who was sent to Nazi-occupied Paris in 1943 from where she worked as a wireless operative sending intelligence reports to the Allies. Though betrayed to the Gestapo, tortured and ultimately killed at the Dachau concentration camp, she defied her captors to the very end.
  • Purushottam Darak: Aurangabad city-based urologist and general surgeon Purushottam Darak received the 'Life Time Achievement Award' presented by Indian Medical Association (IMA) Aurangabad chapter.
  • Current AffirsHanan Al Hroub:A Palestinian teacher from a refugee camp has been awarded one million dollar Global Teacher Prize for her outstanding contribution to the profession.

    Hanan Al Hroub was presented the award at a ceremony held in Dubai on 12th March. She beat India's Robin Chaurasiya, who runs a not-for-profit school in Mumbai for girls from the city's red light district of Kamatipura, and eight other finalists to bag the award.

    Hroub runs the Samiha Khalil High School in Al-Bireh, Palestine.

    She uses a specialist approach in her school, which she developed, detailed in her book 'We Play and Learn' to overcome tense environments of the region under the shadow of the Israel-Palestine conflict. Hroub's approach has led to a decline in violent behaviour in schools where it was a frequent occurrence. She has also inspired her colleagues to review the way they teach and their classroom management strategies.

    The Global Teacher Prize, now in its second year, was set up by Kerala-born entrepreneur and educational philanthropist Sunny Varkey, to recognise one exceptional teacher who has made an outstanding contribution to the profession as well as to shine a spotlight on the important role teachers play in society.
  • International Women’s Day: President presents Nari Shakti awards to 15 women
    Current AffirsPresident Pranab Mukherjee today presented 15 women and 5 organisations with Nari Shakti Puraskar for the year 2015 on the occasion of International Women's Day at Rashtrapati Bhawan. The award is given to eminent women and institutions for their distinguished service to the cause of women, specially belonging to vulnerable and marginalised sections of society. It carries cash award of two lakh rupees and a certificate for institutions and one lakh rupees and a certificate for individuals.

    The awardees of Nari Shakti Puraskar include Anganwadipuram Gram Panchayat, Mallapuram, Kerala, Gudiya Shyam Sevi Sansthan, Varanasi, Jagori, Delhi and Konoklata Mahila Urban Cooperative Bank , Assam.

    Hyderabad-Based Startup Wins The Award
    Hyderabad based ed-tech startup ‘WeMakeScholars’ has bagged the Silicon Valley Challenge USA, organised by Action For India (AFI) in New Delhi. It is one among the five winners among the several that vied for the prize. The award includes a two-week fully paid trip to Silicon Valley where they get to meet with potential CEOs, investors/mentors and interact with the valley’s startup ecosystem. Out of a 100 applicants, 10 were chosen as finalists, this list was further pruned to 5 winners by an eminent jury

    The award was received by Damini Mahajan, co-founder of the startup that took birth at the BITS Pilani Hyderabad campus. The startup received the award from Mr. Amitabh Kant, Secretary, Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) – Government of India (also known as AK-47 for Startups), Mr. Sam Pitroda (Former Advisor to PM), Mr. Dilip Modi (Founder Spice mobile), Mr. Shiv Khemka (Vice Chairman- SUN Group) and Mr. Sanjay Kadeveru (founder Action for India)

    Founded in 2015, WeMakeScholars.com (WMS) is a study opportunities search and discovery platform providing information on everything related to global education. It was an idea originated with the struggle founders – Damini and Arjun Radha Krishna had, while searching for scholarships for their masters in 2012. They started an online community to fill the gap between available opportunities and students knowing about it. The community grew exponentially to 160K members over a span of one year and its members requested to build a dedicated platform to keep data more organised & upto date. Hence, WeMakeScholars was born.

    President Pranab Mukherjee on 11th March awarded Certificates of Honour to eminent scholars of Sanskrit, Pali, Prakrit, Arabic and Persian for the year 2015 at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

    Fifteen scholars were awarded for Sanskrit, two for Arabic, three for Persian and one for Pali/Prakrit. Mr Mukherjee also gave away the Maharishi Badrayan Vyas Samman to young scholars. Five scholars were honoured for Sanskrit and one each for Arabic, Persian and Pali/Prakrit.

    The scheme for award of Certificates of Honour was introduced in the year 1958 by Ministry of Human Resource and Development to honour the scholars of Sanskrit, Arabic and Persian Languages.

    The scheme was extended to cover Pali, Prakrit in 1996. From the year 2008, the scheme was further extended to cover one international award for an NRI or foreigner for their lifetime achievement in the field of Sanskrit. The award consists of a certificate and a cash award of 5 lakh rupees.

    The Maharishi Badrayan Vyas Samman for young scholars in the age group of 30 to 40 years in the field of Sanskrit, Pali/ Prakrit, Arabic and Persian has been introduced from the year 2002. The Award consists of certificate and cash award of one lakh rupees.
  • Sachdev: Renowned Dogri poetess and writer Padma Sachdev has been awardedKrutitava Smagra Samman for 2015 by Bharatiya's Bhasha Parishad,Kolkata. This Samman is in honour for her outstanding contribution in literature and great service to Dogri Language. The Award was presented to the poetess yesterday by West Bengal Governor Sh. Keshari Nath Tripathi. The Award carries an amount of one lakh rupees, a shawl and citation.

    Pallava Bagla: Noted science journalist Pallava Bagla was conferred with an award for his efforts in science and technology communication on television. The national award for “Outstanding Efforts in the Field of Science and Technology Communication on Electronic Medium”, carrying a citation, memento and cash, was presented by Union Minister of Science and Technology Harsh Vardhan.
  • Majoj Kumar: Veteran Film Actor and Director Manoj Kumar will be conferred the 47th Dadasaheb Phalke Award for the year 2015. The award is conferred by the Government of India for outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian Cinema. The Award consists of a Swarn Kamal, a cash prize of 10 lakhs rupees and a shawl.
    A five member jury consisted of Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Salim Khan, Nitin Mukesh and Anup Jalota unanimously recommended Mr Kumar for the prestigious Award.

    Mr Manoj Kumar is remembered for his films Hariyali Aur Raasta, Woh Kaun Thi, Himalaya Ki God Mein, Do Badan, Upkaar, Patthar Ke Sanam, Neel Kamal, Purab Aur Paschim, Roti Kapda Aur Makaan, and Kranti.

    He is known for acting in and directing films with patriotic themes. He is a recipient of National Film Award for the film Upkaar. In 1992, he was honoured with the Padma Shri by the Government of India.
  • Spotlight wins Best Picture, Leonardo DiCaprio bags Best Actor at Oscars 2016
    Hollywood's biggest stars walked the world's most famous red carpet to attend the 88th Academy Awards ceremony, the film industry's highest honors.

    Spotlight a film about the Boston Globe's Pulitzer Prize-winning investigation into child sex abuse by Catholic priests won the Oscar for Best Picture.

    The film Spotlight has received six Oscar nominations, including one for Best Picture of the Year. Heavy favorite Leonardo DiCaprio won the Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his performance in The Revenant.

    Brie Larson took the Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her performance in Room. Alejandro G. Inarritu won the Oscar for Best Director for "The Revenant", this year's most nominated film, featuring Leonardo DiCaprio as a fur trapper who almost dies after being mauled by a bear. Jimmy Napes and Sam Smith won the Oscar for Best Original Song for "Writing's on The Wall" from the movie Spectre".

    The film Son of Saul from Hungary won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language film.

    First-time nominee Mark Rylance won the Oscar for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his performance in Bridge of Spies in which he played a Russian operative. The award for Best Actress in a Supporting role went to 27-year-old Sweden-born actress Alicia Vikander for her performance in The Danish Girl.

    The film "Mad Max: Fury Road" has won the most awards so far - a total of 6 - for Best Costume Design, Best Production Design, Best Makeup and Hair Styling, Best Film Editing, Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing. Protesters urging a boycott of the Academy Awards congregated near the Dolby theatre where the awards were being presented.

    Indo-British filmmaker Asif Kapadia has won the best documentary Oscar for his film "Amy", featuring the musical genius and drug-induced death of jazz singer Amy Winehousesinger.

    Kapadia paid tribute to the promising singer, who died in 2011 following a battle with drug and alcohol. He has already won the Golden Globe and Bafta awards for the documentary. Kapadia, 44, is known for directing "Senna" in 2012 and Irfan Khan-starrer "The Warrior" in 2003.
