  • Mairaj wins India's first skeet medal at a shooting World CupCurrent Affairs
    Indian shooter Mairaj Ahmed Khan has won the silver medal in the Men’s Skeet event of the ISSF Shooting World Cup in Rio De Janerio. Mairaj's feat, gave India its first skeet medal at a World Cup.

    The 40-year-old Indian shooter finished with an overall tally of 14 in the gold medal match, but lost out to Marcus Svensson of Sweden. Earlier in the year, he became India's first ever skeet shooter to win an Olympic quota place after finishing at sixth place in last year's ISSF Shotgun World Cup in Italy.
  • India to host 2018 Commonwealth Judo Championships
    India will host the 2018 Commonwealth Judo Championships in Jaipur. This was announced by the Judo Federation of India. The Commonwealth Judo Congress had allotted the Championships to India at its meeting held at Port Elizabeth in South Africa on 23rd April.

    The Championsips dates are yet to be finalised. This will be the first time that Commonwealth Judo Championships will be held in India. India will also play host to the 10th Asian Cadet Judo Championships & 17th Asian Junior Judo Championships from September 6th to 12th in Kerala.
  • Supreme Court raps BCCI for ‘monopolising’ cricket
    The Supreme Court on 25th April took exception to the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s “monopoly” and “prohibitory regime” in cricket and appointed senior advocate Gopal Subramanium as amicus curiae to guide the implementation of RM Lodha panel’s recommendations.

    A bench of Chief Justice T S Thakur and Justice FMI Kalifulla observed that young players are bound to fall in line with the BCCI since they would not want to put their career prospects in peril.

    Underlining that a balance would have to be struck and that the BCCI cannot go on exercising absolute control over everything connected with cricket, the court said:

    It appointed senior advocate Subramanium as amicus in the matter and sought his assistance to explore as to how the recommendations of Justice R M Lodha committee, which has favoured large-scale structural reforms, could be implemented.The court said it cannot fathom why there should be resistance to the recommendation of ‘one state-one vote’.
  • Union Sports Ministry aid to sports persons
    Union Sports Ministry has decided to provide one lakh rupees per month as out of pocket allowance to the sports persons under the Target Olympic Podium (TOP) scheme in their preparation for the Olympics and Paralympics Games at Rio de Janeiro.

    77 Indian athletes in eight disciplines have qualified for the Olympics till date and many more are likely to qualify in the next two months. Target Olympic Podium scheme is a sports ministry initiative under which Olympic medal prospects are funded by the government for top class training as part of their preparations for the Games.
  • Deepika Kumari equals world record in recurve event at Archery World Cup
    India's Deepika Kumari has equalled the world record in Women's Recurve event at the qualifying stage of Archery World Cup being held in Shanghai. Deepika recorded a score of 686 out of 720 to finish 1st in qualifiers and equal the world record set by South Korea's Ki Boe Bae at the World University Games in Gwangju last year.

    She has already qualified for the Rio Olympics with her performance at the Copenhagen World Championships last year. In the previous editions of the World Cup, Deepika had won silver medals 2011, 2012 and 2013 in the individual events.
  • Syrian refugee carries Olympic flame through Athens camp
    A Syrian refugee who was a sportsman before losing part of his leg in a bombing has carried the Olympic flame through an Athens refugee camp. Ibrahim al-Hussein, who has been given asylum in Greece, bore the torch through Eleonas camp. The 27-year-old electrician used to swim and do judo competitively in Syria.

    Syrian amputee swimmer Ibrahim al-Hussein has run with the Olympic flame through a refugee camp in Athens to highlight the plight of the million people who have fled their homes for Europe since last year.

    Greece has been the main route into Europe since 2015 for more than a million refugees and migrants from conflict-ravaged or poor countries in the Middle East, Asia and Africa.
    Ibrahim al-Hussein, who has been granted asylum in Greece, crossed the Aegean Sea from Turkey to Greece on a rubber boat in 2014 after having lost part of his leg in a bombing in Syria. Al-Hussein, the son of a swimming coach, has swam competitively since the age of five.

    He used a 36-metre high suspension bridge in the city of Deir ez-Zor as a diving board until it was destroyed in 2013 during Syria's civil war. His right leg was amputated from the middle of the calf and he walks with a prosthetic leg that a private doctor arranged for him to receive for free.

    The International Olympic Committee (IOC) had said it wants to draw the world's attention to the plight of refugees.

    Up to 10 refugees are to compete in Rio in August under the Team of Refugee Olympics Athletes, chosen from a pool of 43 prospective Olympians identified by the IOC and supported with funds to train.

    The Olympic torch was lit in Ancient Olympia in southern Greece on Thursday, starting a six-day relay across the country.

    It will be handed over to Brazil on Wednesday, and arrives in Brazil on May 3 for a 100-day relay across the country.
  • Garima Chaudhary won gold medal at the 2016 Commonwealth Judo Championship
    Judoka Garima Chaudhary has clinched the gold medal at the 2016 Commonwealth Judo Championship finals at Port Elizabeth in South Africa. She participated in 63kg category.
    Garima was the only representative from India to contest for Olympic glory in London 2012 at Judo, where Yoshi Ueno from Japan sent her packing in the first elimination round.
  • New Sports Village in Nagpur to be named after Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay
    According to Union Minister for Youth Affairs and sports Sarbanand Sonowal, the new sports village in Nagpur will be named after Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay.

    He was speaking at the handing over ceremony of the land for the proposed Regional Centre of Sports Authority of India in Nagpur.

    Nagpur Municipal Corporation has provided 140 acres of land for this largest project in the country at the nominal cost of one rupee on the lease of thirty years.

    The ambitious project slated to be developed with input cost of around 300 crore rupees would have the state-of-the-art sports infrastructure and allied facilities. The jurisdiction of the Regional Centre would include Maharashtra, Goa and Dadra and Nagar Haveli.
  • Dipa Karmakar becomes first Indian woman gymnast to qualify for Olympics
    Current Affirs Dipa Karmakar on 18th April created history by becoming the first Indian woman gymnast to qualify for Olympics. Karmakar, the 22-year-old gymnast from Tripura, exhibited a strong show as she completed her performance at the final qualifier and Olympic Test Event in Rio de Janiero.

    She finished ninth in the first of the four subdivisions of the women's artistic category, thus qualifying for the Rio Olympics in August.

    Karmakar qualified for the Olympics after finishing all four apparatus in test event. It is one of the most astonishing moments for Indian sports.

    Karmakar was earlier unable to clinch an Olympic berth in the World Championships in November last as she finished fifth place. She had created history by becoming the first woman gymnast to win a bronze medal in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014. This win had made her the first Indian woman to win a commonwealth gymnastics medal and the second Indian, after Ashish Kumar.
  • PCB appoints Inzamam-ul-Haq as new chief selector
    The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) appointed former Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq, as the new chief selector. Inzamam is a veteran of 120 tests and 398 one-day internationals. This follows Inzamam's resignation as head coach of the Afghanistan cricket team. The PCB had dissolved the previous selection committee after Pakistan fared badly in the Asia Cup and World T20.
  • Novak Djokovic, Serena Williams bag top honours at Laureus World Sports awards
    Tennis stars, Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams have bagged the sportsman and sportswoman of the year Laureus World Sports Awards. Both the players, who are the at the top of the Tennis rankings, had won three Grand Slams last year.

    Laureus World Sports Awards, known as the Oscars of Sports, honour the notable sporting personalities and their achievements of the previous year. Paralympic swimmer Daniel Dias of Brazil was given disabled sportsperson of the year award. He won the award for the third time.

    New Zealand's Rugby World Cup-winning team, All Blacks was adjudged team of the year, with their captain Dan Carter bagging the comeback of the year award. 22-year old American golfer Jordan Spieth clinched the breakthrough of the year award.

    Barcelona forward Lionel Messi was the team athlete of the year. A special spirit of sport award was given posthumously to Johan Cruyff. He was given the award for helping to deliver sport-related projects for underprivileged children around the world. The Netherlands football legend died of cancer last month aged 68.
  • Rahul Johri, new BCCI CEO
    Board of Control for Cricket in India - BCCI on 20th April appointed Rahul Johri as its Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Mr. Rahul Johri, was last serving as Discovery Networks - Asia Pacific's Executive Vice-President and General Manager for South Asia. He will take on his new role starting from 1st of June.

    The creation of the post of the CEO was a change recommended by the three-member Lodha panel in its report in January this year. The panel had stressed the need for the BCCI to separate its governance and management duties, with the CEO taking charge of the management side.

    Commenting on the appointment, BCCI President Shashank Manohar, said, Mr. Johri's vision, guidance and support will contribute towards the successful working of the BCCI. Meanwhile, BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur also said, Mr. Johri's appointment would help strengthen the working of the board.
  • West Indies won Twenty-20, both Men and Women titles
    West Indies has won World Twenty-20 cup. Men defeated England team where as Women of West Indies defeated Australian and emerged victorious.

    West Indies on 3rd April won their maiden Women's World T-20 title, defeating reigning champions Australia by 8 wickets at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Chasing a victory target of 149 set by Australia, West Indies eves achieved the target in 19.3 overs, scoring 149 for two. Hayley Matthews with 66 and S.R.Taylor with 59 top scored for the Caribbeans.

  • ICC T20 World Cup 2016: Dream Team of the tournament
    The ICC World T20 has come and gone and 16 teams and over 240 players participated in the tournament, the sixth edition of cricket's shortest format's world cup. Of the 240, 11 have made the cut for world T20 team of the tournament

    Virat Kohli and Stafanie Taylor of the West Indies were respectively named as the captains of the ICC men’s and women’s teams of the World Twenty20.
  • India wins Asian Nations Cup Chess tournament
    Indian men won the Asian Nations Cup Chess tournament with a 3-1 victory over Vietnam in the final round played in Abu Dhabi. India collected 17 points, two more than World and Olympiad champions China, to clinch the title.

    India drew Mongolia and beat the rest of the teams in a 22-team tournament. In the women's section, top seed China won the title with 15 points. Indian women finished fourth with 12 points.
  • Virat Kohli maintains top spot in ICC rankings
    Current AffirsIndia's star batsman Virat Kohli has maintained his number one position in the ICC T20 batsmen rankings after the conclusion of the World T20. Kohli, who was adjudged player of the tournament, leads Australia’s second-ranked Aaron Finch by 86 points. Team India too has retained its number one position.

    West Indies are now one point behind India's 126 points. World T20 runner up England are now fourth after swapping places with South Africa. New Zealand, who lost to England in the first semi-final, have retained their third place at 120 points.
