  • IPL Final: Sunrisers clinch IPL title, beat RCB by 8 runs
    Sunrisers Hyderabad had won Royal Challengers Bangalore in the final match in the Indian Premier League. The Orange Army came up trumps despite initial blitzkrieg from Chris Gayle and Kohli, defending their total of 208 for seven by restricting the home team to 200 for seven.

    Virat Kohli finished the tournament with an astounding 973 runs at an average of 81.08 and and equally impressive strike-rate of 152.03. He hit an unbelievable four hundreds and seven half-centuries, he hit 83 boundaries and a staggering 38 sixes.
  • Gurpreet becomes first Indian to play European top league
    Indian national team goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu achieved a historic feat by becoming the first Indian to feature in a top-tier league match in Europe, by turning out for Norwegian side Stabaek FC.

    The 24-year-old Sandhu kept a clean sheet in his first Norwegian Premier League start for Stabaek FC, helping them claim a dominant 5-0 triumph over IK Start in an away league match.

    Sandhu, who signed for Stabaek FC in 2014, did not play in the Tippeligaen till Sunday though he featured in five matches in the Norwegian Cup.
  • Mary Kom, Sarita Devi fail to qualify for Rio Olympics
    Five-time world champion M C Mary Kom and Asian Games bronze-medallist L Sarita Devi lost their respective second round bouts of the AIBA Women's World Boxing Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan on 21st May.

    With their defeats, both Mary Kom and Sarita Devi have failed to qualify for the Rio Olympics. In this event, only the semifinalists in the three Olympic categories would make the cut for the upcoming Rio Games.

    Mary Kom who was a bronze-medallist at the 2012 London Olympics, lost 0-2 to Germany's Azize Nimani in the 51 kilogram category. Sarita Devi was beaten 0-3 by Victoria Torres in the 60 kilogram category.
  • Anurag Thakur has been elected the BCCI president
    Current Affirs Anurag Thakur has been elected as the BCCI President. He has been only nominee for the post. Thakur is the 34th president of the BCCI and after taking office he nominated Ajay Shirke, the Maharashtra Cricket Association president, as his successor as secretary.

    Thakur replaces Shashank Manohar in the most high-profile post in Indian cricket administration. Thakur’s tenure as BCCI President will extend till 2017.

    Thakur was endorsed by all the six units of East zone - Cricket Association of Bengal, National Cricket Club, Odisha Cricket Association, Tripura Cricket Association, Assam Cricket Association and Jharkhand Cricket Association.
  • Pankaj Advani creates history by winning Asian 6-Red Snooker title
    India's ace cueist Pankaj Advani has created history in Abu Dhabi by clinching the Asian 6-Red Snooker title. Advani thus became the first in the world to hold both world and continental titles in 6-red snooker at the same time.

    The double International Billiards & Snooker Federation (IBSF) World Six-Red Snooker Champion stamped his authority again in the short format of the game, defeating top seeded Malaysian Keen Hoh Moh on 22nd May. Advani will now spearhead the Indian challenge in the team event with Aditya Mehta, Manan Chandra and Kamal Chawla.
  • Bangar appointed Coach for India's Zimbabwe tour
    Former India all-rounder Sanjay Bangar was on 26th May appointed National Head Coach for the limited overs tour of Zimbabwe, starting June 11 while ex-domestic cricketer Abhay Sharma was named fielding coach.

    India will play the first One-Day International on June 11. The Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led young Indian brigade will take on Zimbabwe in three ODIs and as many T20Is in Harare.
  • Indian women win silver medal in Asian Team squash ChampionshipsCurrent Affairs
    Indian women's squash team have won the Silver medal in the Asian Team squash Championships. In the final played at Taipei in Chinese Taipei, they lost to Malaysia by a 0-2 margin. India's performance was better than their bronze-medal finish in the earlier edition of the championship.

    Sachika Ingale lost in straight games to Sivasangari Subramaniam in the first match. Later, Delia Arnold prevailed over India's top player Joshna Chinappa.

    Dipika Pallikal was not required to play the third match which could have been decisive had Joshna won her encounter.
  • Max Verstappen becomes youngest F1 winner in history at Spanish Grand Prix
    Max Verstappen won the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix in his debut race for Red Bull at the age of 18, becoming the youngest-ever winner of a Grand Prix and the first racing under the Dutch flag. Ferrari drivers Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel came second and third after Verstappen.

  • Indian boxers fetch four medals from Asian Youth Championships
    Indian boxers bagged three silver and a bronze medal, to finish third in the overall standings, in the 7th Asian Youth Championships held in Kazakhstan.

    National champion Ankush Dahiya in 60 Kilograms, Ashish Kulhirya in 64 Kilograms and Reyal Puri in 81 Kilograms categories fetched silver medals for the contingent, while Manjeet Singh contributed the solitary bronze to the tally.

    India were placed behind Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan in the medals tally. The tournament featured more than 150 boxers from 23 countries.
  • Novak Djokovic beats Andy Murray in Madrid Open final
    World number one Novak Djokovic beat defending champion Andy Murray in the Madrid Open final. The defeat means the 28-year-old Briton will lose his world number two ranking to Roger Federer on 9th May. The Scot was blown away in the opening set, but fought back to level, only to fall to the Serb's power and accuracy in the decider. Djokovic now moves ahead of Spain's Rafael Nadal with a record 29 ATP Masters 1000 titles.

    Novak Djokovic broke Andy Murray's serve in the opening game and the 2011 winner gave a masterclass combining powerful ground shots with brutal accuracy as he found the lines with uncanny regularity. Djokovic moves ahead of Spain's Rafael Nadal with a record 29 Masters 1000 titles.
  • Shashank Manohar resigns as BCCI President to contest for ICC Chairman post
    Shashank Manohar on 10th May stepped down as Board of Control for Cricket in India, BCCI, President barely seven months after being appointed.

    In a letter addressed to BCCI Secretary Anurag Thakur, Mr. Manohar tendered his resignation with immediate effect from the post of President of BCCI and as the representative of BCCI on the International Cricket Council (ICC), and also from the the Asian Cricket Council. In his letter he thanked his colleagues and the staff for their support and cooperation. As per BCCI rules, a Special General Meeting has to be convened within 15 days, apprising the members of the current situation.

    BCCI accepted and confirmed Shashank Manohar's resignation from the post of President, acknowledging the contribution made by the senior cricket administrator in running the game during his tenure.

    According to sources, Mr. Manohar would now contest for the post of Chairman of ICC. The ICC has set a rule that its Chairman should be of independent nature and can't act in dual role keeping his position as his country's cricketing chief. ICC's election process for its new President will begin on 14th May.
  • Shashank Manohar unanimously elected as ICC chairman
    Shashank Manohar has been elected by the Board unanimously and unopposed as the chairman of the International Cricket Council

    This was following the ICC full council’s approval of the constitutional amendments proposed by the Board following its April meeting.

    Manohar, who on 10th May resigned as the President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, is the first elected independent chairman of the games’s governing body. His two year term will commence from immediate effect.
  • India to send largest ever contingent to Rio Olympics
    India will send its largest ever contingent - about 90 sports persons - to Olympics being held in Rio beginning 5th of August.

    The Lok Sabha was informed about this by Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju, while replying on behalf of Sports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal during the Question Hour. He said about 90 athletes have qualified for Olympics in Rio. India will send the largest ever contingent this year.

    Mr. Rijiju said 58 sports persons have qualified for individual events while 32 hockey players -- both men and women -- also qualified to participate in the Olympics. The Minister said special assistance has been given to sporting talents for their training both in India and abroad.
  • Michel Platini to resign as UEFA President
    Suspended European Football Chief Michel Platini has announced to resign as UEFA President. The announcement came after he lost his appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport against a ban for ethics violations imposed by the sport's world body, FIFA. The arbitral panel upheld Platini's suspension but cut his sanction from six to four years.

    Platini called the verdict a deep injustice and said he was left with no choice but to step down from the UEFA position he has held since 2007. Platini was handed an eight year suspension by the FIFA Ethics Committee last December before being lowered to six years in February by the FIFA's Appeal Committee.
  • Anil Kumble retained ICC Cricket Committee head, Rahul Dravid made member
    Former India captain Anil Kumble has been re-appointed ICC Cricket Committee chairman for a second term of three years while his one-time team-mate Rahul Dravid was named member of the top panel. Kumble, the all-time highest wicket-taker for India, was appointed as the chairman for his first term in 2012 and will now continue to head the panel until 2018.

    Another former India captain Dravid and ex-Sri Lanka skipper Mahela Jayawardene have been appointed to the ICC Cricket Committee, adding even more cricketing experience to the list of eminent people already on the panel. The two have played 1,161 international matches between them from 1996 to 2015, and each has been appointed for a three-year term.

    Former Australia off-spinner has been elected as current player representative, replacing Laxman Sivaramakrishnan, who has completed his three-year term. Richard Kettleborough, three-time ICC Umpire of the Year, has been appointed as umpires' representative in the committee.

    The ICC Cricket Committee is representative of all stakeholders in the game, including players and umpires. It is empowered to make recommendations on cricket playing issues.
  • Indian team win one silver, two bronze in Archery World Cup
    Indian women's team secured silver after losing to Chinese Taipei in the final on 1st May, while men's trio and mixed pair won their respective bronze playoffs in the first stage of Archery World Cup at the Yuanshen Stadium in Shanghai.

    Women's team comprising Deepika Kumari, Bombayla Devi Laishram and Laxmirani Majhi put up an inconsistent show and lost to the lower-ranked Chinese Taipei 2-6 in the recurve team final.

    Later, the third seeded Indian men's recurve team of Atanu Das, Jayanta Talukdar and Mangal Singh Champia thrashed the ninth seed British team 6-0 to bag the bronze medal.

    The mixed pair of Deepika and Atanu ended India's campaign on a high, getting the better of much fancied Koreans 5-4 in a nerve wracking shoot-off to end with another bronze.
  • Sachin goodwill ambassador for Rio Olympics
    Current AffirsCricket icon Sachin Tendulkar has accepted Indian Olympic Association - IOA’s request to become India’s goodwill ambassador for Rio Olympics.

    In a letter written to IOA, Tendulkar has said that he will be happy to be a part of any awareness campaign that can rally the country around our athletes and motivate them.

    The master blaster said that awareness of athletes’struggle, discipline and single minded focus will help develop many more world beating champions and encourage passionate following of Olympics in India.

    Tendulkar will now join Olympic shooting champion Abhinav Bindra and Bollywood superstar Salman Khan, who have already accepted IOA’s request to become goodwill ambassadors.
  • India slips in latest ICC ODI, T20 rankings
    The Indian cricket team was dislodged as the top Twenty20 side and also dropped a rung to fourth in the ODI charts of the latest ICC rankings following the annual update. India are now second in the Twenty20 charts, behind New Zealand. Australia and New Zealand have retained the top two positions on the ODI rankings.

    Results from 2012-13 have been dropped, while results from 2014-15 have been reduced to a weighting of 50 per cent.

    Australia, who won their fifth World Cup title in Melbourne last year, are now sitting on 124 points after dropping two points to lead New Zealand by 11 points.

    South Africa have swapped places with India to move into third position, while the West Indies have exchanged places with Pakistan to push the 1992 World Cup winners out of the top eight.

    Other sides to gain following the annual update include sixth-ranked England (103, up two), seventh-ranked Bangladesh (98, up one), eighth-ranked West Indies (88, up two), 10th-ranked Afghanistan (51, up four) and 11th-ranked Zimbabwe (47, up two).

    A significant date on the ICC events calendar is 30 September 2017, which is the rankings cut-off date for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019.

    The host, England, and the seven next highest-ranked sides on the MRF Tyres ICC ODI Team Rankings on September next year will qualify directly for cricket's biggest event, while the bottom four ODI ranked sides will join the top sides from the ICC World Cricket League in the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2018 to fight for the two remaining positions.

    Although there will be another ODI team rankings annual update prior to this cut-off date, it is significant that from now on the results of all ODIs that will affect qualification will be weighted at 100 per cent whereas matches played between May 2014 and April 2016 will by then be weighted at only 50 per cent

    All the teams bunched together in the middle of the table will have to win as many matches as possible in the forthcoming season, knowing it will help ensure direct qualification for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019, which will be staged from May 30 to July 15 in the United Kingdom.

    In the T20I update, Kane Williamson's New Zealand have gained 12 points following the annual update and consequently vaulted two places to join India on 132 points.
  • India finish fourth in junior shooting World Cup
    Indian shooters have ended their campaign at the International Shooting Sport Federation Junior World Cup in Suhl, Germany, at a creditable fourth position. They finished with three gold, four silver and three bronze.

    Rituraj Singh was the most successful performer with two gold medals in both the individual and team events of the men's 25m Standard Pistol. In pistol events, Shivam Shukla won a gold and a silver. Arjun Das won a yellow metal and a bronze for Team India.

    Among the junior women, Yashaswini Singh Deswal was the most impressive with her two silver medals, both in the individual and team sections of the 10 metre Air Pistol event.

    During the April 29 to May 5 competition, a total of 585 junior athletes from 48 countries participated but only 24 nations made it to the medals table.

    Italy topped the table with seven gold, four silver and one bronze. Russia stood second with five gold, six silver and nine bronze, while Germany came third with five gold, three silver and three bronze medals.

    ISSF action now moves to Munich, Germany, where the fourth leg of the Senior World Cup is scheduled to start on May 19.
