India beat Pakistan by 9-wickets to win T20 Blind World Cup at Bengaluru M Chinnaswamy Stadium. Successfully defending their title in the T20 Blind World Cup, India achieved the victory target of 198-runs in the 18th over in the final of the tournament on 12th February.
Pakistan had scored 197 for 8 in their 20 overs. The team had won the previous edition by defeating the same rivals in the final in 2012. - R. Ashwin become quickest to bag 250 wickets
R. Ashwin has become the quickest to bag 250 wickets when he claimed Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim on Day 4 of the India-Bangladesh test in Hyderabad on 12th February. He broke Australian Dennis Lillee’s record. - India beat Bangladesh by 208 runs
In Cricket, India defeated Bangladesh by 208 runs in the one-off Test at Hyderabad on 13th February. Chasing a target of 459, the visitors were bundled out for 250, just before tea, on the final day of the match on 13th February.
The win is India's sixth successive series victory. In the Test, skipper Virat Kohli became the first Test batsman to hit double hundreds in four consecutive series, and also scored the most Test runs in a home season. Ashwin became the fastest bowler ever to take 250 Test wickets. Kohli was adjudged man of the match. - Victory for Indian racer
Indian racer Jehan Daruvala created history by winning the New Zealand Grand Prix 2017 at the Chris Amon Circuit. With the win, Jehan became the first and only Indian to win a Grand Prix in motorsport and has joined the elite list of Grand Prix winners including Keke Rosberg, Bruce Mclaren, John Surtees and Sir Jackie Stewart. - Sindhu rose to career best BWF rank
India's star shuttler PV Sindhu has risen to a career best BWF ranking of number five. She overtook Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi, as per the latest rankings. This is the first time that Sindhu has broken into the top five.
Saina Nehwal, who is ranked ninth, is the other Indian in the top 10, while Chinese Taipei's Tai Tzu Ying continues to lead the rankings. - India win silver at the Asian Women's Rugby Sevens Trophy
The Indian Women's team on 18th February won silver at the Asian Rugby Sevens Trophy tournament at Vientiane, Laos. A total of seven countries from across Asia including South Korea, Philippines, Malaysia, Nepal, Pakistan, India and hosts Laos vied for top honors in the tournament. All the seven teams played on a Round Robin basis.
- India to host FIBA Women's Asia Cup basketball tournament
India will host FIBA Women's Asia Cup basketball tournament at Bengaluru in from July 23 to 29 this year. India has also been given another continental level tournament-the FIBA U-16 Women's Asian Championship - which will be held from October 22 to 28 in Hyderabad. This will be the first time since 2009 that India will host a major FIBA (International Basketball Federation) event.
In 2009, the BFI was allotted the same two Championships- the 1st FIBA Asia U-16 Championship for Girls in Pune and the 23rd FIBA Asia Championship for Women in Chennai. - Delhi's Mohit Ahlawat scored 300 runs in T20
On 7th February Delhi cricketer Mohit Ahlawat smashed an incredible 300 not out off just 72 balls, hitting an unbelievable 39 sixes, in a Twenty20 match at Lalita Park in New Delhi.
The highest score of Twenty20 cricket, not including club cricket, belongs to West Indies great Chris Gayle who had hit 175 not out in an Indian Premier League (IPL) match for the Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2013. In Twenty20 Internationals, Australia's Aaron Finch holds the record most runs in an innings when he scored 156 against England in 2013. - Official mascot of FIFA U-17 World Cup 'Kheleao' unveiled
With just 238 days remaining for the start of FIFA Under-17 World Cup India 2017, the official mascot of the tournament 'Kheleao' was unveiled at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi on 10th February. A clouded leopard called Kheleao was introduced to hundreds of football fans in a ceremony attended by Sports Minister Vijay Goel and All India Football Federation President Praful Patel.
The clouded leopard is an endangered wild cat whose habitat extends from the Himalayan foothills to mainland Southeast Asia. Kheleo will participate in numerous activities in the run-up to the first-ever FIFA tournament to be hosted by India, which will be played from October 6 to 28 this year. - Kohli scored double century in ongoing Indo- Bangladesh test series
In the One test match series against Bangladesh, Indian captain Virat Kohli has became the first batsman in the history of Test cricket to claim four hundreds in as many series. Kohli also surpassed Sir Don Bradman's record by achieving fourth Test double in 4 successive series.
He made consecutive double centuries against West indies, New Zealand, England and now with Bangladesh. On the way to the record, Kohli also went past Virender Sehwag's record for most runs in a home season - Roger Federer beats Rafael Nadal in Australian Open final
Swiss star Roger Federer has annexed his 18th Grand Slam trophy. In the summit of the Men's Singles at the Australian Open in Melbourne on 29th January, he defeated arch-rival Rafael Nadal of Spain in five sets. It was Federer's first Major title win after the 2012 Wimbledon.
In the process, 35-year old Federer also became the second-oldest winner of a Grand Slam tournament in the Open Era after Australian Ken Rosewall won the Australian title at the age of 37 in 1972.
Earlier in the Mixed Doubles final, India's Sania Mirza and her Croatian partner Ivan Dodig ended as runners-up, after losing to the Amerian-Colombian duo of Abigail Spears and Juan Sebastian Cabal in straight sets. It is second runner-up finish for Sania and Dodig together, after losing the final of the 2016 French Open to Leander Paes and Martina Hingis. - PV Sindhu wins Syed Modi Grand Prix Gold Title
Olympic silver medallist PV Sindhu has won her maiden women's singles crown at the Syed Modi Grand Prix Gold badminton tournament. In Lucknow on 28th January, top seed Sindhu outplayed Indonesia's Gregoria Mariska in the summit clash in straight games.
In the Men's Singles, National Champion Sameer Verma bagged the title defeating compatriot B. Sai Praneeth. India also claimed the Mixed Doubles title, when Pranaav Jerry Chopra and N Sikki Reddy emerged winners by beating compatriots Ashwini Ponnappa and B Sumeeth Reddy 22-20 21-10 in the final.
Overall, India scooped up three titles out of the five events in the tournament. In the Women's Doubles final, the Denmark duo of Kamilla Ryter Juhl and Christina Pedersen beat the Indian combination of Ashwini Ponnappa and Sikki Reddy. The Men's Doubles title was also claimed by Denmark, when Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen emerged winners against the Chinese Taipeh pair of Lu Ching Yao and Yang Po Han in straight games - Abhinav Bindra, Pullela Gopichand part of task force to prepare for next three Olympics
India’s lone Olympic gold-medallist Abhinav Bindra and national badminton coach Pullela Gopichand on 30th January found a place in an eight-member Task Force of the Sports Ministry to draw up an action plan for the next three Olympic Games.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced the setting up of a task force which will help plan for the “effective participation” of Indian sportspersons in the next three Olympics — in 2020, 2024 and 2028. Bindra, Gopichand and former Indian hockey captain Viren Rasquinha were the only three former sportspersons named in the task force.
The other five members of the task force are School Sports Promotion Board head Om Pathak, hockey coach S Baldev Singh, who runs an academy in Shahabad, G L Khanna (Professor and Dean of Exercise and Physiology at Manav Rachna International University at Faridabad), journalist Rajesh Kalra and Sports Authority of Gujarat Director General Sandeep Pradhan. - Medals for Tokyo 2020 Games to be made from recycled mobile phones
Olympic and Paralympic medals for the Tokyo 2020 Games will be made from recycled mobile phones. The Japanese public will be asked to donate old phones and small appliances to gather two tonnes of gold, silver and bronze for the 5,000 medals.
3rd T-20: India trounce England by 75 runs, seals series 2-1
India beat England by 75 runs in the third T-20 match at Bengaluru and clinched the 3 match series, 2-1. Leg spinner Yuzvendra Chahal took 6 wickets for 25 runs. England collapsed from 118 for 2 to 127 all out. Jasprit Bumrah took 3 wickets, while Amit Mishra took one. - Virat Kohli remains top T20 batsman, India rise to second on ICC rankings
Virat Kohli maintained his top spot in the latest ICC rankings of T20 batsmen while India have gained a spot by virtue of their series win against England to climb to the second spot in the team rankings.
Kohli leads number two ranked Aaron Finch of Australia by 28 points, while Glenn Maxwell of Australia is third. Kohli is ranked second in Tests and third in ODIs which makes him the only Indian batsman in top five across all formats.
Jasprit Bumrah also maintained his second position in the bowlers' table with a four-point difference between him and Imran Tahir. - India beat Pakistan to top pool in Asian Squash
Indian beat arch rival Pakistan to top Pool A in the Asian Junior Team Squash Championship in Hong Kong on 2nd February. - Lakshya Sen becomes World No.1 Junior Badminton player
India's Lakshya Sen has become the World No 1 Junior Badminton player. He achieved the distinction on 2nd February in the latest rankings of the Badminton World Federation (BWF).
Lakshya moved ahead of Chia Hao Lee of the Chinese Taipei, to attain the top spot. According to BWF current rankings, Lakshya has 16,903 points in eight tournaments he has played in the season. Chia Hao, who is at the second spot, has 16,091 points.
Fifteen-year-old is the first shuttler from Uttarakhand to attain the number one spot at the international level. - Virat Kohli features in latest cover star of Wisden Cricketers' Almanack
Indian skipper Virat Kohli, who led his side to victory against England in all three formats of the game recently, has featured in the latest cover star of the bible of cricket - Wisden Cricketers' Almanack. Kohli becomes only the third Asian origin player after Tendulkar and England all-rounder Moeen Ali to be featured on the cover of the magazine.
