- Four Indians qualify for Rio Olympics
Four Indians on 26th June qualified for the Rio Olympics beginning 5th of August. In Track and Field, Mohammad Anas in 400-meters, Srabani Nanda in 200-metres and Ankit Sharma in Long Jump made the cut, while Atanu Das sealed a berth at the Games in Archery.
At the Polish Athletics Championship, Mohammad Anas shattered his own 400-metre national record to qualify. He clocked 45.40 seconds, the exact Rio qualification timing. Over at the international meet in Kazakhstan, Sprinter Srabani Nanda made the cut after covering 200-meter event in 23.03 seconds.
In the field event, national long jump record holder Ankit Sharma qualified with a jump of 8.17 metres. Archer Atanu Das has made it to the Games after selection trial at Bengaluru.
The archer will represent India in the Men's Individual Recurve event. He got the better of his compatriots Jayanta Talukdar and Mangal Singh Champia for the spot. The four Olympic qualifications came a day after Dutee Chand made it to the Rio Games. - Chile retain Copa America football title beating Argentina
Chile has retained the Copa America Football title beating Argentina in the penalty shootout. In the Final played at New Jersey this morning, Chile defeated the 14-time winners 4-2. - India's Rajput wins silver in ISSF World Cup
Indian shooter Sanjeev Rajput clinched the silver medal for India in men's 50-metre rifle 3 position event of the ISSF World Cup in Baku, Ajerbaijan on 28th June. - Ravi sastry resigned from ICC post
Former India captain and Team Director Ravi Shastri has resigned from his post as media representative in ICC's prestigious Cricket Committee. - India wins 2 gold and 2 silver in Javelin Throw at Budapest Open athletic meet
India bagged two gold and an equal number of silver medals in men's and women's categories of Javelin throw at the Budapest Open Atheletics meet on 19th June.
In women's section, national record-holder Annu Rani won gold with a throw of 57.24 meters. Suman Devi, a South Asian Games champion, won the silver with a throw of 55.38 meters. In men's section, Shiv Pal Singh won the gold with a throw of 76.74 meters while another Indian athelete, Rajinder Singh won silver. - India settles for Silver medal at Archery World Cup in Antalya
The Indian mixed recurve team of Deepika Kumari and Atanu Das has won silver at the Archery World Cup in Antalya. Indian team lost to South Korea 1-5 in the final at Konyaalti Beach Park on 19th June. Indian team trailed 0-2 in the first set against the top-seed Korean pair of Choi Misun and Ku Bonchan and went down 1-5 in the final.
The Sixth seeded Indian duo reached final after beating second-seeded pair of Mauro Nespoli Guendalina Sartori in straight sets in the semi-finals. Earlier, the women's recurve team of Deepika Kumari, Bombayla Devi Laishram and Laxmirani Majhi also went down in the bronze medal clash to Italy. - India beat Zimbabwe by 3 runs, seal T-20 series 2-1
India have clinched the T20 International series against Zimbabwe by a 2-1 margin, winning the third and final match by a narrow three-run margin. At Harare on 22nd June, the series decider went right down to the last ball. After restricting India to 138 for six, the hosts got close to the target before ending at 135 losing six wickets.
Kedar Jadhav, who bailed India out of trouble with a timely 58 off 42 balls, was declared Man of the Match. Indian bowler Barinder Sran won the Player of the series honour. - Anil Kumble is new Indian cricket coach
Former Spinner Anil Kumble will be the new coach of Indian Cricket Team. The decision of his selection was taken in the BCCI working committee meeting on 234d June in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh.
His tenure would be for one year. Selection of the bowling, batting and assistant coaches will be done soon. Kumble's first assignment will be India's four-Test tour of West Indies.
Forty-five year old Anil Kumble was among 57 candidates who applied for the position advertised by the BCCI earlier this month. The Cricket Advisory Committee comprising Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman and Saurav Ganguly then proposed the name of Kumble after interviewing a number of candidates.
Kumble's international cricket career spans 18 years. He is the highest wicket-taker for India till date and third in the international list, behind Muttiah Muralitharan and Shane Warne.
Kumble has played 132 tests, claiming 619 wickets including a best of 10 for 74 against Pakistan in Delhi in 1999. He accumulated 337 ODI wickets. In Twenty20 internationals, he captured 57 wickets in 54 matches. Overall, Kumble has 1136 wickets to his name in first class cricket.
Kumble was awarded Padma Shri and also received Arjuna Award. He was Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1996. He was appointed Chairman of the ICC Cricket Committee in 2012, a position he still holds. He was also included into the Great Hall of Fame in 2015. - Boxers Vikas Krishan and Manoj Kumar qualify for Rio Olympics
Asian Games champion Vikas Krishan on 23rd June booked Olympic berth after advancing to the semifinals of the International Boxing Association's (AIBA) World Qualifying Tournament in Baku, Azerbaijan. Second seed Vikas got past Korea's Lee Dongyun by a 3-nil margin in quarter finals.
Vikas has now taken the total number of Indian boxers assured of Olympic berths to three. Shiva Thapa had made the cut in the 56 kilogram category for Rio during the Asian Qualifiers in March. Former Commonwealth Games gold-medallist, Manoj Kumar also qualified for the Olympic Games on 24rd June.

Indian sprinter Dutee Chand has qualified for Rio Olympics in the women’s 100metre event after meeting the qualification mark at 26th International Meeting G.Kosanov Memorial in Almaty, Kazakhstan on 25th June. She became the first indian woman to qualify for the event since qualification started for the event. PT Usha had qualified for the event in 1980 Olympics. - Saina Nehwal wins Australian Open Super Series Badminton trophy
Ace Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal has lifted the Australian Open Super Series Badminton tournament title. In the final match played at Sydney on 2nd June, Saina defeated Chinese Sun Yu to claim her first title of year 2016.
The match went see saw, as both won a set each and the decider set was won by Saina. In the first set the Chinese took lead 11-21, and Saina took the second set 21-14 and third was won by Saina 21-19.
In the semi-finals yesterday, while Seventh Seeded Saina easily saw off higher placed Chinese Yihan Wang, Sun stunned compatriot and third seed Xuerui Li. - India made white wash in Zimbabwe
India defeated Zimbabwe in the third and final one day international and clinched series with a 3-0 win. Zimbabwe made 123 runs, in the last one day and Indian Openers KL Rahul (63 not out) and debutant Faiz Fazal (55 not out) made India win with 10 wickets
India also completed a hat-trick of whitewashes against the hosts, having won earlier ODI series by 5-0 and 3-0 margin in 2013 and 2015 when Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane led the sides respectively.
For Dhoni, there were two milestones that he achieved from the series. With 107 wins as captain, he equalled Allan Border for the second highest number of wins in ODI history behind Ricky Ponting (165). Also he became the first Indian wicketkeeper-batsman to complete 350 dismissals in 50-overs cricket.
Dhoni now stands fourth in the overall list behind Kumar Sangakkara (482 victims), Adam Gilchrist (472) and Mark Boucher (424 victims). - Russian athletics: IAAF upholds ban before Rio Olympics
There will be no track and field athletes competing under the Russian flag at the Rio Olympics after the world athletics governing body ruled they had not met readmission criteria imposed when they suspended over widespread state sponsored doping in November last year.
The unprecedented step was taken by the International Association of Athletics Federations because an expert task force ruled that Russia had not taken sufficient steps to overhaul its testing procedures and prove its athletes were clean. - Australia beat India to clinch 14th Champions Trophy title
Australia beat India 3-1 in the final of Champions Trophy Hockey tournament in London on 17th June. India settled for silver after losing to Australia in penalty shootout. Both the teams failed to score a goal even after getting several penalty corners during regulation period and the match went into the shootout to decide the winner. - Novak Djokovic beats Andy Murray to claim 1st French Open title
World number one Novak Djokovic beat Britain's Andy Murray to win his first French Open title and complete the career Grand Slam.
Djokovic won his 12th major title and became the first man since Rod Laver in 1969 to hold all four Grand Slams at once.
Second seed Murray played superbly to win the first set but could not convert a break point early in the second, and Djokovic took control to win in three hours.
He becomes only the eighth man in history to have won all four of the sport's major singles prizes - and could yet match Laver's achievement of winning all four in a calendar year. - Tintu Luka runs season's best, wins silver in Prague
Rio Olympics-bound Tintu Luka has won a silver medal in 800 metres in the Josef Odlozil Memorial Athletics Meet in Czech Republic. At Prague, Luka covered the distance with her season's best timing of 2 minutes point Six One seconds. The reigning Asian champion was second behind 2013 World Youth Championship gold winner Anita Hinriksdottir of Iceland who ran the distance in 2 minutes point five four seconds.
27-year-old Luka is still a long way to go as she is placed at 30th spot among the season's top list. Former world champion and London Olympics silver medallist Caster Semenya of South African is leading with 1 minute, 56.six Four seconds.
The Kerala runner holds the national record of 1:59.17 which she did way back in 2010. She qualified for Rio Olympics during the World Championships in Beijing last year. - Lucknow to host Junior hockey World Cup
The city of Lucknow will host the junior men's hockey World Cup from the 8th of December this year. The International Hockey Federation (FIH) announced this on 7th June.
The Eleven-Day long event will feature 16 teams. They include defending champions Germany, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Egypt, England, India, Japan, Korea, Netherlands, South Africa, New Zealand, Pakistan and Spain.
While the men's competition takes place in December, the women's Hockey Junior World Cup takes place shortly beforehand in Santiago, Chile, between November 24 and December 4. India will not be part of that event. - Maria Sharapova receives two-year ban for failing drug test
Maria Sharapova has been banned for two years by the International Tennis Federation for using a prohibited drug. The Russian tennis sensation was provisionally banned in March after testing positive for meldonium at Australian Open in January this year.
The heart disease drug, which Sharapova says, she has been taking since 2006 for health issues, became a banned substance on 1 January 2016. The five-time Grand Slam winner said she cannot accept the unfairly harsh ban and will appeal against it.
Sharapova will now challenge the suspension, at the Court of Arbitration for Sport. In a statement, she said the tribunal concluded her offence was "unintentional" and that she had not tried to use a "performance enhancing substance".
The tribunal ruling said Sharapova also tested positive for meldonium in an out-of competition test, as well as in the aftermath of her Australian Open quarter-final defeat in January. Tribunal treated both results as a single anti-doping violation. - Financial aid for Heena Sidhu increased to 1 crore
In a huge boost for Heena Sidhu, the Sports Ministry on 8th June increased the financial aid for the Rio Olympics-bound ace pistol shooter from Rs 75 lakh to Rs one crore under the Target Olympic Podium (TOP) scheme for her training till the showpiece event.
Heena secured an Olympic quota for the country in January when she led from start to finish and claimed the gold medal in women’s 10-m air pistol at the Asia Olympic Qualifiers for Shooting.
Besides raising the amount of her financial assistance, the ministry has also approved the release of 90 per cent of total estimated cost for the former world number one’s training, which is scheduled from June to August. - Bindra chosen as India's flagbearer at Rio Olympics
Olympic champion shooter Abhinav Bindra was on 10th June chosen as the flagbearer of the Indian contingent at the Rio Games' opening ceremony on August 5.
The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) confirmed that they have chosen the 2008 Beijing Olympic gold medallist as the country's flagbearer for the quadrennial extravaganza. Bindra will be making his fifth Olympic appearance this year.
Bindra is till date India's only individual gold medallist at the Olympics. The shooter achieved the feat when he clinched a historic gold in 10-metre air rifle event at the Beijing Games in 2008. - Tamil Nadu teen IM Visakh becomes first Indian to win Mayor's chess
Tamil Nadu teenager and International Master NR Visakh created history on 9th June by becoming the first Indian to clinch the Mumbai Mayor's International Open Chess Tournament and lead a top-three sweep in Mumbai. Visakh thus emerged as the first Indian to capture the title in its nine-year history and won 3 lakh rupees, while Ghosh took home 2 lakh rupees and Gusain 1 lakh rupees. Five other Indians also finished among the 8 players in joint second place. - Euro 2016 kicks off
After a gruelling qualifying campaign, Euro 2016 got off to a fantastic start on 10th June with Cristiano Ronaldo and the rest of the continent’s biggest stars descending on France, having to fend off minnows aiming to make their presence felt
This will be the first 24-team European Championship, a month-long marathon a far cry from the eight-nation event when France with Michel Platini were last hosts in 1984.
Euro 2016 also sees Northern Ireland and Hungary return to major tournaments after three-decade absences, while it will be the first ever finals for the minnows of Iceland and Albania and Iceland. - K.L. Rahul century in debut match
K.L.Rahul has become 1st Indian batsman to score century in debut one day international match. India won against Zimbabwe, in the 1st ODI, with 9 wickets.
When Rahul reached 87, Rahul also became India's highest individual scorer on debut, eclipsing Robin Uthappa’s 86 against England at Indore in 2006. - White tiger unveiled as 2018 Winter Games mascot
A cheerful white tiger cub was unveiled on 2nd June as the official mascot for South Korea’s 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.
Tigers traditionally represent the country and the white tiger is considered sacred there, organisers of the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics said.
The mascot was named “Soohorang“, a combination of the Korean words for protection and tiger. The mascot’s white colour represents snow and ice. “It’s a beautiful animal, strongly associated with Korean culture,” said Gunilla Lindberg, Chair of the IOC Coordination Commission for the Pyeongchang Games.
“It also symbolises the close link between the Olympic Winter Games and the natural environment.” An Asiatic black bear wearing a bobble hat and named “Bandabi” was also unveiled as the mascot for the 2018 Paralympic Games. Both animals feature in Korea’s national foundation mythology and are closely linked to folklore from the peninsula. - Garbine Muguruza beats Serena Williams to win French Open final
Spaniard Garbine Muguruza has lifted the woman's singles title of French Open. She defeated defending champion Serena Williams in a one sided summit clash in Paris on 4th June.
