- Dhoni opens innings in hockey league
The captain of the nation cricket team now has a stake in the national sport. M S Dhoni is the new co-owner of the Ranchi franchise of the Hero Hockey India League (HHIL), along with Sahara Adventure Sports. The team - formerly known as Ranchi Rhinos - will now be called Ranchi Rays. It had won the inaugural Hero Hockey India League in 2013 but was scrapped because of disagreement between former owners - Patel-PS Group and Uniexcel Group - and Hockey India.
This is Dhoni's second foray into sports entrepreneurship. He also has a minority stake in Hero Indian Super League's Chennai franchise - Chennaiyin FC, of which he is the co-owner, along with actor-producer Abhishek Bachchan and Vita Dani of Asian Paints. - Glorious finale for Sania-Cara combine
The India-Zimbabwe tennis pairing of Sania Mirza and Cara Black clinched the prestigious season-ending WTA Finals title 26th October.
The third seeds, playing their last tournament together, took exactly an hour to thrash second seeds Hsieh Su-wei (Chinese Taipei) and Peng Shuai (China) in the women's double final, being played on the hard-courts of the Singapore Indoor Stadium. Sania had also reached the US Open semis with Cara earlier this season. Last month, the duo announced that the season finale would be their last tournament together. - Sandhu trumps top seed Fathi
Harinder Pal Sandhu and Dipika Pallikal emerged winners in the fourth and final leg of the JSW-PSA men’s Challenger and the JSW-WSA women’s event respectively at the ISA courts, on 29th October. - Advani triumph
Pankaj Advani clinched the World Billiards Championship (time format) title to bag a record 12th world crown and also complete a rare 'Grand Double' post his third win in both the long and short formats in the same year. Advani's previous grand doubles were in Malta in 2005 and in his hometown in 2008. - Bindra became Chairman of ISSF
The country's individual Olympic gold medallist, Abhinav Bindra, has been elected chairman of International Shooting Sport Federation's (ISSF) Athletes Committee, becoming the first Indian to receive the honour.
The ISSF, which is the world body representing the sport of shooting, confirmed this today in a letter, a copy of which was marked to the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI), the representative body of the sport in India.
Bindra is the first Indian shooter to be bestowed with the honour. By virtue of being chairman of the Athletes Committee, Bindra will also become a member of the Administrative Council of the ISSF. It may be recalled that Bindra was re-elected member of the ISSF Athletes Committee in elections held last month in Granada, Spain for a second time.

The International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) is an organization that governs some international shooting sports. While not the only such organization, it is the one that is a member of the International Olympic Committee and so it is in charge of the Olympic shooting events. Not all ISSF shooting events are Olympic, however. The organization, with 154 national member federations, has its headquarters in Munich, Germany. - Saketh Myneni trumps top seed for title
Saketh Myneni beat the top-seeded Aleksandr Nedovyesov of Kazakhstan in the final of the $50,000 Challenger tennis tournament at the Indore Club courts on 19th October.
It was the maiden Challenger singles title. The title was worth 80 ATP points and $7200. Interestingly, he had accumulated only 84 ATP points in singles from 13 tournaments for his current ranking of 451. This was the second loss for 118th-ranked Nedovyesov in a Challenger final in India this season, after he had lost to Somdev Devvarman in the $100,000 Delhi Open final in February. - Sarita Devi, coaches and Chef-de-mission suspended
The International Boxing Association (AIBA) Executive Committee Bureau on 21st October decided to provisionally suspend L. Sarita Devi, her coaches Gurbakhsh Singh Sandhu, Blas Iglesias Fernandez and Sagar Mal Dhayal as well as Indian chef-de-mission in the Incheon Asian Games, Adille J. Sumariwalla and not to allow any of them to participate at all levels of AIBA competitions, events and meetings until further notice.
This case has been sent for review by the AIBA Disciplinary Commission, and it means that Sarita Devi, the above mentioned coaches as well as Sumariwalla, will not be allowed to participate in the AIBA women’s world boxing championships in Jeju Islands (Korea), 2014
Sarita Devi, who had dominated her 60kg semifinals bout against Korean boxer Ji-Na Park, had reacted strongly after she was declared the loser. She had refused to accept the bronze medal, but later apologized to the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), which had given her a stern warning. - BCCI suspends bilateral ties with West Indies
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has suspended all bilateral cricket tours with the West Indies Cricket Board and accepted the Sri Lankan proposal to play a five-match one-day series starting November 2. Advani now is the holder of three different world titles in 2014 — the IBSF World 6-Red snooker title, the World Team billiards title and now the World billiards championship (point format). - Djokovic triumph
World No. 1 Novak Djokovic defeated Tomas Berdych on 5th October and won the China Open and maintains a remarkable 100 per cent record in the Beijing tournament.
Meanwhile, French Open champion Maria Sharapova was forced to battle hard to overcome Petra Kvitova in the women’s final — a victory which moves her into second place in the rankings.
The fourth seed Russian appeared to have carried into the match the determination she showed in her powerful 6-0, 6-4 semifinal defeat of Serbian World No. 9 nine Ana Ivanovic. - Dhoni becomes co-owner of Chennaiyin FC
After Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli, Mahendra Singh Dhoni has become the latest cricketer to own a football team in the high-profile Indian Super League, investing in the Chennaiyin FC ahead of the event starting October 12. Dhoni, the current Indian cricket captain, has pencilled a deal to be a co-owner of Chennaiyin FC along with Bollywood actor Abhishek Bachchan. - Phelps banned
Michael Phelps, the 18-time Olympic swim champion arrested last week for drink driving, was banned for six months by USA Swimming and dropped from the 2015 World Championships.
According to the federation, Phelps has agreed that he will not represent the United States at the World Championships on August 2-9 in Kazan, Russia.
The 29-year-old retired after the 2012 London Olympics with a record 22 Olympic medals, but launched a comeback earlier this year.
He won three gold medals at the Pan Pacific Championships in late August in Australia to cement his place on the world championship team. - ICC suspends Gazi, Utseya
Bangladesh’s Sohag Gazi and Zimbabwe’s Prosper Utseya have been suspended from bowling in international cricket with immediate effect for “illegal” bowling actions, the ICC said on 8th October. - Dhoni sole Indian on Forbes’ list
India cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni is the sole Indian sportsman to figure on Forbes' list of the world's most valuable athlete brands, a list that has been topped by American basketball player LeBron James and includes golfer Tiger Woods and tennis stars Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. Dhoni is ranked fifth with a brand value of USD 20 million in 2014, slightly down from USD 21 million last year.
Forbes said Dhoni signed bat sponsorship deals with Spartan Sports and Amity University in late 2013, reportedly worth a combined USD 4 million annually, up from the USD 1 million Reebok was paying previously.
Forbes's Most Valuable Athlete Brands in Sports lists 10 athletes whose endorsement income exceeded the endorsement income earned by their peers by the largest amount during the past year.
James tops the list with a brand value of USD 37 million in 2014. The NBA's biggest marketing star pulled in a total of USD 53 million from endorsers like Nike, McDonald's, Coca-Cola, Upper Deck.
The publication said for the first time since 2007, the top athlete brand is not Woods but James, who will be rejoining the Cleveland Cavaliers after fours season and two National Basketball Association (NBA) titles with the Miami Heat. - Uchimura Won fifth world all-around crown
Japan's Kohei Uchimura won a record-stretching fifth straight all-around title at the world gymnastics championships on 9th October in Nanning, China. The 2012 London Olympic all-around champion nicknamed "King Kohei" in the world of gymnastics, collected 91.965 points through six apparatus events with Britain's Max Whitlock second at 90.473.
Japan's Yusuke Tanaka was third at 90.449. After his second apparatus, the pommel horse, Uchimura never gave up his lead although 21-year-old Whitlock, the 2014 Commonwealth all-around champion, came 0.067 points behind him after the third rotation.
Arguably the greatest all-around gymnast of all time, Uchimura has been unbeaten since he finished runner-up to China's now-retired Yang Wei at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. In 2004, he became the only gymnast, male or female, to win four world all-around titles. He is also the only to win three or more in a row. He topped the table on floor exercise and vault with flawless landings while Whitlock dominated the pommel horse with 16.000 points. Uchimura was the night's last performer and he steadily handled the high bar in complicated aerial moves. He slightly stepped ahead in landing but it did not affect his overall lead at all. - China won more medals in Asian games
Asian Games were conducted from September 19th to October 4th, at Incheon in South Africa. The final medal tally was led by China, followed by South Korea and Japan. 14 World and 27 Asian records were broken during the Games. Japanese swimmer Kosuke Hagino was announced as the most valuable player (MVP) of the Games
The 2018 Asian Games will be the 18th staging of the regional, multi-sport event to be hosted by Indonesia, with the capital city of Jakarta will be the main host
Originally Hanoi, Vietnam was chosen as the host. However, they withdrew due to the financial constraints
In Asian Games India stood at 8th place
China has got 151 gold, 108 silver and 83 bronze taking total tally to 342.
India has got 11 gold, 9 silver and 37 bronze taking total talley to 57.
Other important points
The Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation, that manages dairy cooperative Amul, announced its memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Indian Olympic Association on 11 July 2014. This MoU has made Amul the official sponsor of the Indian contingent at the 2014 Asian Games and Commonwealth Games, which was held in Glasgow, Scotland- India defeated Pakistan and won first hockey gold in 16 years
- Mary Kom became first Indian woman to win gold medal in boxing
- Varsha Gautam, Aiswarya Nedunchezhiyan became first Indian women to win a sailing medal
- Indian men kabaddi team won seventh consecutive gold
Chennai won in Champions league
Chennai Super King won second champions league t20 title defeating Kolkata Knight Riders in the final. Suresh Raina has got the man of the match award. He made brilliant century and helped Chennai super kings to get the victory.
The Champions League Twenty20, also referred to as the CLT20, is an annual international Twenty20 cricket competition played between the top domestic teams from major cricketing nations. The competition was launched in 2008 with the first edition held in October 2009. It is jointly owned by the BCCI, Cricket Australia and Cricket South Africa, and is chaired by N. Srinivasan, who is also the chairman of the ICC. Sundar Raman is the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the CLT20 as well as the IPL.
