  • Triple jumper Renjith Maheswary won silver in Asian Indoor Athletics Championships
    Current Affirs Triple jumper Renjith Maheswary on 21st February won a silver to swell India's medal tally to five on the third day of the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships in Doha.. Maheswary had a modest jump of 16.16 metres. In 60 metre hurdles, India's Gayathry Govindharaj qualified for tomorrow's final with her personal best to 8.38 seconds.
  • Punjab Warriors clinch maiden HIL title
    Punjab Warriors have clinched their maiden Hockey India League title. They thrashed Kalinga Lancers in the summit clash played in Ranchi on 22nd February. The Punjab-based side were third time lucky as they had finished runners-up in the last two editions. They lost to Delhi Waveriders in 2014 and to Ranchi Rays last year.

    Punjab team's defender Mark Knowles was named the Man of the Match while Player of the Tournament Award was bagged by Rupinder Pal Singh from the Delhi Waveriders. Earlier yesterday, Delhi Waveriders got the better of defending champions Ranchi Rays 2-0 in the bronze medal play-off match of the League.
  • Mashrafe Bin Motaza:Bangladesh limited-overs captain Mashrafe Bin Mortaza is set to be named as the United Nations Development Programme's (UNDP) "national goodwill ambassador for youth". The appointment will be made official on that day following a signing ceremony, the UNDP said in a statement.

    The release stated that UNDP Bangladesh will appoint Mashrafe Bin Mortaza as the UNDP National Goodwill Ambassador for Youth in Bangladesh. Mashrafe, who is currently the ODI and Twenty-20 skipper, said that he had received the proposal a month ago and was extremely excited to receive the opportunity.
  • Sania-Hingis extend winning streak to 41 matches
    Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis combine extend unbeaten streak to 41 matches at Qatar Open. The Indian tennis star Sania and her Swiss partner Martina survived a scare before pulling off a three-set win over the Chinese pair of Yi-Fan Xu and Saisai Zheng in the WTA Qatar Open. The win helps them extend their unbeaten streak to 41 matches in Doha on 24th February.

    Sania and Hingis have together won four titles this year out of an overall trophy count of 13. They started the year with wins in Brisbane and Sydney before completing a hat-trick of Grand Slam titles at the Australian Open.
  • Gianni Infantino is the new FIFA President
    Gianni Infantino of Switzerland has become the new President of FIFA after winning a second-round vote in Zurich. Infantino got 115 of the 207 eligible votes to take a decisive majority ahead of Sheikh Salman of Bahrain. Sheikh Salman got 88 votes after being the front-runner during the four-month campaign. Prince Ali of Jordan had four, and Jerome Champagne of France got zero votes.

    In the first round, Infantino surprising led with 88 votes. Sheikh Salman had 85 votes, Prince Ali 27, and Champagne seven. Infantino, general secretary of European governing body UEFA, replaces the Blatter, who held the position since 1998.
  • India won series against Srilanka
    India beat Srilanka by 9 wickets in the Third T20 match at Visakhapatnam on 14th February. India win series 2-1.
  • West Indies lift ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup title
    The West Indies have lifted their maiden ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup title. In the final in Mirpur on 14th February, they beat three time champions India by five wickets. Needing to make 146 runs for a win, the Caribbeans achieved the target in 49.3 overs. Earlier put in to bat, India were bowled out for 145 in 45.1 overs.

    India were playing in their 5th Under-19 World Cup final, while the West Indies were appearing for the second time in the summit clash, after finishing runners-up to Pakistan in 2004.
  • National Woman Sports begin in Patna
    Current Affirs The National Woman Sports began on 14th February at Patna. It will be upto 17th of this month. 22 states are participating in this event. Teams of various states are participating in different events including Athletics, Hockey, Tennis and Handball. For the first time National Woman Sport has been organized in Bihar.
  • SAG end with glittering ceremony; India top games with highest ever medals win
    The 12th South Asian Games have been declared closed. Union Minister for Sports and youth Affairs, Sarbananda Sonowal declared the games closed at a glittering closing ceremony which is being held at the Sarusajai Stadium in Guwahati.

    He also handded over the games flag to his counterpart of Nepal, the country which will host the next edition of the event in 2018.

    India has finished the games at the top of the medal standing with a whooping 308 medals - 188 gold, 90 silver and 30 bronze. Sri Lanka is second while Pakistan is third
  • India women clean sweep 3 match ODI against Sri Lanka
    India women completed a 3-0 clean sweep of the three match One Day Internatioal cricket series against Sri Lanka on 19th February. Medium-pacer Deepti Sharma grabbed six wickets haul before Veda Krishnamurthy scored a half-century after India posted a comfortable seven-wicket win over Sri Lanka in the third and final ODI in Ranchi on 19th February.
  • Pak umpire Asad Rauf banned for 5 years on corruption charges
    Current Affirs Pakistani umpire Asad Rauf was on 12thFebruary banned for five years by the BCCI after its disciplinary committee found him guilty of corrupt practices. The 59-year-old , who was part of the ICC's elite panel ,was accused of accepting expensive gifts from bookies besides placing bets on IPL matches in the 2013 edition.

    After a decision on his fate was deferred for several weeks, the committee, headed by BCCI president Shashank Manohar finally announced the ban on him today. Rauf did not appear before the committee, but had sent his preliminary submissions on January 15 and a written statement in February 1st week of 2016.

    The BCCI Committee found Rauf guilty of misconduct and corruption under multiple statutes of its BCCI Anti-Corruption Code. Rauf had been withdrawn by Pakistan from the ICC's elite panel after the allegations against him broke out.
  • India sweep T-20 series against Australia
    Current AffirsIndia completed a total whitewash of the three match T-20 series against Australia, defeating the hosts by seven wickets in the third and final Twenty20 match to win the series 3-0 on 31st January in Sydney.

    Meanwhile, Indian men's team became the number one side in the ICC T20 rankings after whitewashing Australia in the three-match series in Sydney. India, who are also the number one in Tests, overtook the West Indies to reach the top sport in the shortest format. India have 120 rating points, two more than the Caribbean unit. Sri Lanka also have 118 rating points like the West Indies but they are third in the charts. India have hit top form in the T20 format ahead of the World T20 to be held at home in March-April. England with 117 rating points are fourth in the rankings ahead of New Zealand 116 points, South Africa 115 points, Pakistan 113 and Australia 110. Afghanistan with 80 points and Scotland 66 points round up the top-10.

    In another cricket match in Sydney on 31st January, in the third and final Women's Twenty-20 match, Australia defeated India by 15 runs. Chasing the victory target of 137 runs, Indian Women's team could manage only 121 runs for 8 wickets in 20 overs. Indian eves have already grabbed the T-20 series winning first two matches.
  • Novak Djokovic retains Australian Open Men's Singles Title
    World Number One Novak Djokovic has retained the Auustralian Open Men's Singles Title. In the final in Melbourne on 1st January, the Serbian defeated Andy Murray of Britain in straight sets. Djokovic also equalled the record of Roy Emerson's record of six Australian Open Singles titles.

    The defending champion also kept his unique record against Murray in the Australian Open Final, by beating the Briton for the fourth time in Men's Singles at the year's first Grand Slam championships. Murray succumbed to his fifth loss in five Australian Open finals. Djokovic claimed his 11th grand slam title to match the totals of Rod Laver and Bjorn Borg.
  • K Shrikanth wins Men's Singles Title in Syed Modi Badminton tournament in Lucknow
    Ace Indian shuttler K Shrikanth clinched the men's single title defeating Chinese Huang Yuxiang in Syed Modi International Grand prix Gold Championship at Lucknow.

    In the mixed doubles title Indonesian pair Praveen Jordan and Deby Susanto defeated Thai pair Puavaranukroh Dechapol and Sapisree Tairattanchai in three sets.
    While in the Men's double match India's Pranaav Jerry Chopra and Akshay Dewalkar clinched the title defeating Malasian V Shem Goh and Wee Kiong Tan.

  • ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup: Rishabh Pant records fastest fifty against Nepal
    Wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant smashed his way into the record books with 78 off 24 balls as India colts gave Nepal a rude reality check by handing them a seven-wicket hammering to finish their league engagements unbeaten in the ICC U-19 World Cup in Mirpur on 2nd February.
  • Torch Relay of 12th South Asian Games held in Itanagar
    The Torch Relay of the 12th South Asian Games was held in Itanagar on 3rd February. Arunachal Pradesh Governor JP Rajkhowa flagged of the event by handing over the Torch to Mountaineer Ansu Jensenpa, who holds the world record of climbing the Everest thrice. The relay started at Raj Bhawan and culminated at Indira Gandhi Park from where it returned to Guwahati.

    The 12th South Asian Games which is being organized from 5th of this month to 15th at Guwahati and Shillong, is the first mega sports event that would take place in the North East. The SAG is a biennial multinational multi-sport event held amongst the athletes from South Asia and being organized in the similar format of Olympics, Asian Games, and Commonwealth Games (CWG).

    The SAG this year will have athletes participating from eight member countries namely Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Over three thousand five hundred athletes and sports officials confirmed to participate in the Games.

    Meanwhile, the Centre has deployed 45 additional companies of security forces in Guwahati in the wake of upcoming South Asian games. Guwahati Police Commissioner Mukesh Agarwal said that five more companies will also arrive. He said that proper security measures have been put in place in Guwahati.
  • India's special concession to Pak athletes for South Asian Games
    India has granted special concession to Pakistani athletes taking part in the 12th South Asian Games by declaring Guwahati and Kolkata as designated entry points for them. The decision by the Union Home Ministry came after Islamabad raised concerns over the safety of its athletes.

    Concerns were raised following the disruption of a concert by Pakistani ghazal singer Ghulam Ali and attack on politician Sudheendra Kulkarni for organising the launch of a book by Pakistan Foreign Minister Khurshid Mahmud Kasuri in Mumbai.
  • 12th South Asian Games begin in Guwahati
    Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 5th February declared the 12th South Asian Games open at a glittering opening ceremony in Guwahati. In his address at the Indira Gandhi Athletics Stadium, Mr. Modi said he is privileged to be among the players of the SAARC countries. He said the South Asian Games demonstrate 3-Ts - Team work, Togetherness and Talent.

    Mentioning North East India particularly Guwahati's love for sports, Prime Minister said the Under-17 Football World Cup will be held in India next year. He said Guwahati has been chosen as a prime venue for the event.
  • Kerala wins 61st National School Athletics championship
    Kerala has won the 61st National School Athletics championship which concluded in Kozhikode yesterday. This is for the 19th consecutive time Kerala becomes the champions in the event.

    Tamil Nadu came second. Kerala, the host of the championship got 306 points winning 39 gold, 29 silver and 17 bronze medals. Tamil Nadu, who came second, got 116 points winning 11 gold, 8 silver and 13 bronze medals. Maharahtra with 101 points gained the third position. Kerala won 10 meet records out of 20 records which were reported in the meet.
