  • Vijay Kumar chosen for Flag Bearing
    (Vijay Kumar, 20th Commonwealth Games, Flag Bearing)
    London 2012 silver medallist Vijay Kumar will be the Indian flag-bearer at the opening ceremony of the 20th Commonwealth Games. Vijay Kumar was the best shooter at the London Olympics, winning silver in the rapid-fire pistol event. The Indian team for the Games will comprise of 221 athletes, including 101 women, besides 83 officials. In all, the effective strength of the contingent in Glasgow will be 304.
    India will be participating in 14 of the 17 disciplines in which competitions are to be held. The events left out are netball, rugby sevens and triathlon.
  • Common Wealth Games
    (Common Wealth Games, be held in Glasgow, Scotland, largest multi-sport event)
    The 2014 Commonwealth Games (officially the XX Commonwealth Games) will be held in Glasgow, Scotland, from 23 July to 3 August 2014. It will be the largest multi-sport event ever held in Scotland with 4,100 competing athletes, although the country previously hosted the 1970 and 1986 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh. Over the last 10 years, however, Glasgow and Scotland had staged World, Commonwealth, European, or British events in all 17 sports proposed for the 2014 Commonwealth Games, including the World Badminton Championships in 1997
    • Sanjita Khumukcham Chanu and teammate Mirabai Saikhom Chanu, both from Manipur, won first two medals at the 20th Commonwealth Games on 24th July. They won in weight lifting.
    • Indian shooter Abhinav Bindra won Gold medal in 10m air rifle, on the first day of the shooting competitions at the 20th common wealth games
    • Bindra has got gold 4th consecutive in common wealth gamees
    • Malika Goel won silver in women 10m air pistol
    • Sukhen Dey won gold in Men’s 56kg weightlifting. Ganesh mali won Bronze in this category
    • Santoshi Matsa won bronze in women 53 kg weightlifting
    • Apurvi Chandela and Rahi Sarnobat won gold in the women’s 10m air rifle and 25m pistol respectively.
    • Ayonika Paul (rifle) and Anisa Sayyed (pistol) clinched silver
    • India also picked up a silver medal through Prakash Nanjappa in the men’s 10m air pistol.
    The 2010 Commonwealth Games, officially known as the XIX Commonwealth Games, were held in Delhi, India, from 3 to 14 October 2010. A total of 6,081 athletes from 71 Commonwealth nations and dependencies competed in 21 sports and 272 events, making it the largest Commonwealth Games to date. It was also the largest international multi-sport event to be staged in Delhi and India, eclipsing the Asian Games in 1951 and 1982.
    The opening and closing ceremonies were held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, the main stadium of the event. It was the first time that the Commonwealth Games were held in India and the second time it was held in Asia after Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 1998. This also marked the first time a Commonwealth Republic hosted the games.
  • India record win at Lords
    (India cricket, India defeated England, at Lords)
    India defeated in the second test against England. The venue of the match was Lords. This is the second win for India in Lords. This came after 28 years in this prestigious venue. 
    • India have produced a victory after failing to register a single win in their previous fifteen Tests overseas. The win is their second at Lord’s after 28 years and their sixth ever in a Test match in England.
    • Under MS Dhoni’s leadership, India have won 27, lost 14 and drawn 14 out of 55 played – success % 49.09.
    • Ishant Sharma has become the first Indian fast bowler to take seven wickets in the fourth innings in Tests. Javagal Srinath had taken 6 for 21 vs South Africa at Ahmedabad in 1996-97.
    • Ishant’s figures are the fourth best by an Indian speedster away from home. Kapil Dev had taken 8 for 85 vs Pakistan at Lahore in 1982-83 and 8 for 106 vs Australia at Adelaide in 1985-86.
    • Ishant’s figures are the fourth best in the fourth innings for India. Anil Kumble had captured 10 for 74 vs Pakistan at Delhi in 1998-99 – the best ever.
    • With 272 dismissals (235 catches + 37 stumpings) has moved into the fifth place in the charts of leading wicketkeepers, overtaking the 270 (265 catches + 5 stumpings) in 81 Tests by Jeff Dujon (West Indies).
    • Ishant became the first Indian bowler to bag seven wickets in an innings at Lord’s. Actually, he is the first Indian bowler to take seven wickets in an innings in England.
    • Ishant has received his second Man of the Match award in Tests – his first was for taking ten wickets against the West Indies at Bridgetown in 2011.
    • Two Indian fast bowlers – Bhuvneshwar Kumar 6/82 and Ishant Sharma 7/74 – for the first time in a Test match, have bagged six or more wickets in an innings.
    • The win is India’s first in 16 Tests outside India since the Kingston Test against West Indies in June 2011. During this period India had lost ten and drawn five matches.
    • The win is India’s only sixth on England soil in 54 Tests.
  • Germany won FIFA world cup
    Germany won FIFA world cup, in the final Germany defeated Netherlands. Final match was played in Rio de Janeiro

    In the FIFA ranking, Germany stood at first spot.
    Germany led by Philipp Lahm reclaimed the top spot after a gap of 20 years after it won the 2014 FIFA Football World Cup held in Brazil.

  • Djokovic won Wimbledon final
    Novak Djokovic won in Wimbledon final defeating Roger Federer. In women’s category Petra Kvtova has won, winners in other categories are as follows:
    • Men’s doubles – Vasek Pospisil and Jack Sock
    • Womens doubles – Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci
    • Mixed Doubles – Nenad Zimonjiic and Samantha Stosur
    • The 2014 Wimbledon Championships took place at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London
    • Matches were held from 23 June to 6 July 2014. They were the 128th championships, and the third Grand Slam tournament of the year
    • The men and women's singles champions Novak Djokovic of Serbia and Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic had previously won their maiden - and, prior to 2014, only - Wimbledon title in 2011
  • Jitu Rai ranked No.1 in the world
    Jitu Rai's exploits at the recently-concluded editions of the World Cup in Munich and Maribor has seen him rise to World No. 1 spot in the men's 10m air pistol category, according to the ISSF rankings released on 1st June.
