  • P V Sindhu wins maiden China Open Super Series Premier
    Current AffairsOlympic silver medallist P. V. Sindhu clinched her maiden Super Series Premier title defeating Sun Yu of China in the finals of the $700,000 China Open badminton tournament on 20th November.
  • Kenya's Olympic champion Eliud Kipchoge wins men's Delhi Half Marathon
    Reigning Olympic marathon champion Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya won the men's race of Delhi Half Marathon while Ethiopia's Worknesh Degefa clinched the women's title on 20th November. Kipchoge clocked 59 minutes and 44 seconds to cover the 21.097km distance.
  • Gaganjeet Bhullar wins Indonesia Open.
    Gaganjeet Bhullar of India 21st November won the 300,000 US Dollar BANK BRI-JCB Indonesia Open for the second time in his career after closing with a four-under-par 68.

    Bhullar, who also won the event in 2013, sealed his seventh Asian Tour victory and a second title this season with a 16-under-par 272 total at the Pondok Indah Golf Course in Jakarta. Jeev Milkha Singh of India, a two-time Asian Tour number one, settled for tied 2nd place.

    With his win at the BANK BRI-JCB Indonesia Open, Bhullar is now the fifth player after Thaworn Wiratchant of Thailand, Frank Nobilo of New Zealand, Frankie Minoza of the Philippines and Lu Hsi-chuen of Chinese Taipei to win the event twice.
  • Lodha panel submits status report in Supreme Court.
    The apex court-appointed Justice R M Lodha committee has moved the Supreme Court seeking a direction to appoint former home secretary G K Pillai as an observer to Guide BCCI in the administrative works including award of contracts, transparency norms and holding of future domestic, international and IPL matches.

    The committee, in its third status report submitted in the apex court on November 14 argued that while the day-to-day administration of BCCI is presently carried out by the CEO, there is need to have an observer to guide board in its administration, particularly with reference to the award of contracts, transparency norms, audit.

    The committee then recommended that former Union home secretary G K Pillai be appointed as the observer. It also said that several office bearers at both the BCCI and the state associations continue to hold the posts although they stand disqualified as per the order of Supreme Court. Court may hear the arguments on 5th December.
  • Sachin Singh wins gold at the AIBA Youth World Championship
    In boxing, Sachin Singh became the third Indian boxer ever to bag gold at the AIBA Youth World Championships. In the 49 kg weight class, Sachin recorded a stunning unanimous victory over Cuban national champion Jorge Grinan in the summit clash at St. Petersburg, Russia.

    Sachin outpunched his rival 5-0 to record a rare Indian triumph over a Cuban boxer. India thus finished the tournament with gold and a bronze, a marked improvement from the solitary bronze won in the 2014 edition.
  • Aditi Ashok wins Women's Indian Open
    Current Affairs Teen golf sensation Aditi Ashok scripted history on 13th November as she became the first Indian woman to win a Ladies European Tour title by clinching the Hero Women’s Indian Open.
  • Sydney to host Invictus Games in 2018: Britain's Prince Harry
    Australia will host the 2018 Invictus Games for wounded military personnel, Britain's Prince Harry announced on 12th November. More than 500 serving and former personnel from 17 nations will compete in the multi-sports competition in Sydney.

    Harry, who launched the first such games in London in 2014, said Australia was chosen because it was an iconic city with a proud military heritage and sports-mad fans.

    Athletes, who have been wounded, injured or become ill in service, will compete in both individual and team sports including swimming, archery, cycling, track and field, and wheelchair rugby. The games have been held in London and Orlando, and are due to be held in Toronto in 2017.
  • Lewis Hamilton wins Brazilian Grand Prix
    In Formula-1, Lewis Hamilton produced a masterful performance to win a wet, chaotic, crash-strewn Brazilian Grand Prix and take the title fight to the final race.

    His ninth win of 2016 came in a race with several high-speed accidents, two stoppages and five safety cars. The victory cut the lead of his Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg, who finished second, to 12 points. Rosberg will secure the championship if he finishes third in Abu Dhabi on 27th November, even if Hamilton wins.
  • Sports Ministry launches 'Khelo India' Scheme
    The Union Sports Ministry on 15th November launched the national programme -Khelo India Scheme. Sports Minister Vijay Goel said the National Sports Code might be implemented on state federations as well and asked the state ministers and secretaries to discuss the issue so that a decision can be reached with consensus.
  • Padmini Rout wins National Women Premier Championship for third time
    International Master Padmini Rout scores a hat-trick in the National Women Premier Chess Championship in New Delhi on 14th November, Padmini played out a hard fought draw with her Petroleum Sports Promotion Board (PSPB) teammate Eesha Karavade that helped her to secure a hat-trick of title wins.

    Ending her tally with eight points from 11 games, Padmini managed to put an end to a series of mediocre performances that saw her rating go down by over seventy points.

    The Odisha girl was at the top of her game right through and did not face any challenge in her quest to strike for gold. S Vijayalakshmi of Air India won silver medal while Eesha bagged bronze.

    The victory ensured that Padmini will be a part of the Indian women team in the next World team chess championship in which the Indian eves qualified by virtue of their performance in the last Chess Olympiad. The other two confirmed members of the team are Grandmasters Koneru Humpy and D Harika while the remaining two places will be decided most likely according to February rating list.
  • Sprinter Dharambir handed eight-year ban
    Haryana sprinter Dharambir Singh, who was barred from representing the country in the Rio Olympics at the last minute for failing a dope test, has been slapped an eight-year ban by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA). 200-metre runner Dharambir had returned positive for an anabolic steroid in an in-competition test conducted by the NADA during the Indian Grand Prix Meet in Bengaluru on July 11.

    Since this was his second dope-related offence, the NADA Anti-Doping Disciplinary Panel has handed him a lengthier ban of eight years.

    The 27-year-old Haryana-lad was earlier stripped of his gold medal won in 100m race during the National Inter-State Championships in 2012 for evading a mandatory dope test.
  • Manavjit Singh clinches gold medal in National Shooting championship
    Former world champion Manavjit Singh Sandhu clinched the gold medal in men's trap event at the 60th National Shooting Championship for Shotgun in Jaipur on 19th November.

    The four-time Olympian from Punjab shot 117 in qualifying to reach the six-man final rounds in fourth spot. He then shot 12 out of 15 birds in the semi-final stage to make it to the gold medal match. He defeated silver winner Raninder Singh, who was representing Odhisa, 14-13, to seal the top spot in his favour.

    Young Kynan Chenai of Telengana, who represented India at the Rio Olympics, bagged the bronze medal beating Adhiraj Singh Rathore of Rajasthan 14-12.
  • Indian win 8 gold medals in Commonwealth Wrestling Championships
    Current AffairsIndia continued their rich run in the Commonwealth Wrestling Championships on 6th November by winning eight gold medals and as many silver in New Delhi on 6th November. India won five gold medals in freestyle through Harful, Bajrang, Jitender, Sandeep, Deepak and Arun.
  • Andy Murray beats John Isner to win Paris Masters title
    Andy Murray celebrated his rise to No. 1 by beating John Isner to win the Paris Masters for the first time. It was his career best eighth title this season, his 14th in Masters overall and ended Isner’s bid for a first Masters title.

    Murray, who officially replaces Novak Djokovic at the top of the rankings 1st week of November, now leads Isner 8-0 in their career meetings, dating back to their first match at the Australian Open six years ago. Murray has won four consecutive tournaments, taking his career tally to 43. Next up is the season- ending ATP finals in London, beginning on 14th November.
  • Sharapova to return as UN goodwill ambassador
    Tennis star Maria Sharapova will once again be a UN goodwill ambassador when her doping ban expires in April and she returns to international tennis competition, a UN statement said.

    The United Nations had suspended Sharapova's role as goodwill ambassador in March after she failed a drug test, putting a hold on a nine-year partnership with the UN Development Programme.

    The Russian star's 24-month ban for testing positive for meldonium was cut to 15 months by the Lausanne-based Court of Arbitration for Sport. Sharapova had admitted using meldonium for 10 years to help treat illnesses, a heart issue and a magnesium deficiency.
  • Narinder Batra elected as new president of International Hockey Federation
    Narinder Batra has become the first Indian to be elected the President of the International Hockey Federation.

    He was voted to the top post by an overwhelming margin during the penultimate day of the 45th FIH Congress in Dubai on 12th November.

    Batra, who is the president of Hockey India, defeated David Balbirnie of Ireland and Australia's Ken Read to become the 12th FIH President and also the first Asian to grab the post. Batra got 68 votes in his favour while Balbirnie and Read managed 29 and 13 votes respectively. He became president of Hockey India in October 2014 after serving as its secretary. Batra succeeds Spaniard Leandro Negre, who has been the FIH chief since 2008.
  • India beat Pakistan 3-2, lifts Asian Champions Trophy
    Current AffairsIn Hockey, India has lifted the Men's Asian Champions Trophy. In a thrilling Final at Kuantan, Malaysia, India defeated arch-rivals and defending champions Pakistan, 3-2 to win the tournament for the second time. It had won the inaugural edition of the tournament in 2011.
  • Indian women win maiden Asian Champions Trophy
    The Indian women's hockey team lifted its maiden Asian Champions Trophy title with a thrilling 2-1 win over China in the final in Singapore on 5th November. Before this, India's best finish in the Women's Asian Champions Trophy came in the last edition in 2013 when it finished runner-up to Japan. It had finished third in the inaugural tournament in 2010.
