  • R Ashwin is fastest Indian & second overall to take 200 Test wickets
    Current Affairs Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin on 25th September became the fastest Indian and second overall to take 200 wickets, reaching the milestone in his 37th Test.
  • India wins historic 500th Test
    India notched up a mammoth 197-run win against New Zealand in their historic 500th cricket Test in Kanpur on 26th September. Senior off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin who claimed 6 wickets in the innings, completed his fifth six-wicket haul. However, Ravinder Jadeja was declared Man of the Match for his fine all-round performance. He captured six wickets and scored 92 runs in the match. The victory, which is India's 88th on home turf.

    India has now taken their unbeaten tally on home soil to 11 matches. New Zealand, on the other hand, has remained without a win on the Indian soil since 1998.
  • Sathiyan Gnanasekaran wins Belgium Open
    Sathiyan Gnanasekaran has become only the second Indian table tennis player to win an ITTF event. At De Haan in Belgium, he clinched the men's singles title of the Belgium Open by defeating local player Nuytinck Cedric in the final.
  • Indian women's kabaddi team wins gold in Asian Beach Games
    India bagged their first gold medal at the 5th Asian Beach Games with the women's beach kabaddi team winning the title for the record fifth time in succession in Danang, Vietnam. Indian beat Thailand in a hard-fought summit clash at Bien Dong Park. The Indian women's kabaddi team had been winning the gold since the inception of the biennial Games in 2008. For Thailand, it was the fifth time in a row they had lost to India in a final.

    The Indian men's beach kabaddi team, however, lost to arch-rivals Pakistan 28-30 in a nerve-wrecking final to settle for a silver. India had won gold in men's beach kabaddi the 2008 and 2010 editions.

    In women's 70kg category kurash (a form of wrestling originated in Uzbekistan), Amisha Tokas won a silver after losing to Nguyen Thi Lan of Vietnam in the final. In beach bodybuilding, Manoj Kumar Majumdar won a bronze in upto 158cm category.

    India has so far won six medals including one gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze, in the Games. India is now at 15th spot in the medal table headed by hosts Vietnam (25 gold, 22 silver, 27 bronze).
  • Official emblem for 2017 Fifa U-17 World Cup to held in India unveiled
    The Local Organising Committee of the FIFA U-17 World Cup India 2017 (LOC) unveiled the official emblem for the world cup at Margao, Goa on 27th September. The ceremony was attended by FIFA President Gianni Infantino, and Chairman of the LOC and All India Football Federation (AIFF) Praful Patel.

    FIFA President said it is clear for all to see how football has already been making huge strides in India adding that there is still an enormous room for growth, and the FIFA U-17 World Cup can be an ideal catalyst to develop the sport even further and across the whole country.

    Praful Patel said, this is a historic occasion for India and the AIFF. He said hosting first FIFA World Cup will change forever the way football is seen in the country.

    The emblem of the first ever FIFA tournament in India is designed as a celebration of the country's rich and diverse culture, with its main elements being the Indian Ocean, the banyan tree, the kite and the starburst, which is an interpretation of the Ashoka Chakra, an integral part of the national identity. The FIFA U-17 World Cup India 2017 will happen in six venues across the country during the month of October 2017.
  • PM Modi unveils trophy for BRICS Under-17 football tournament
    Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on 29th September unveiled the trophy for BRICS Under-17 football tournament in New Delhi. The tournament will be held in Goa from 5th of next month.

    According to Sports Minister Vijay Goel the trophy symbolises the free and enterprising spirit of youth and strength and commitment of the BRICS nations towards solidarity in their global endeavours. The ceremony was attended by Ambassadors and High Commissioners of BRICS nations and other dignitaries.
  • India lifts 4th men's Under-18 Asia Cup hockey trophy by beating Bangladesh 5-4
    India lifted the 4th men's Under-18 Asia Cup hockey trophy by defeating Bangladesh 5-4 in the final in Dhaka on 30th September. Earlier, India had stormed into the final by defeating arch rivals Pakistan 3-1 in the semi-final on 29th September.
  • India finishes 2nd in Track Asia Cup; win two more gold medals on final day
    India ended their campaign in the Track Asia Cup at second position at the Cycling Velodrome in IG Stadium in New Delhi on 18thSeptember. India got eight medals, including two gold medals on the final day of the competition i.e. on 18thSeptember.
    With this, India's medals tally comprises 16 with five gold, four silver and seven bronze medals. Hong Kong topped the table with 18 medals which comprise 11 gold four silver and three bronze medals.
    India's Deborah Herold, in her Final Sprint event, clinched the top position with a time of 12.576 minutes and 12.493 minutes in the first and second rounds, respectively. She beat Zhaojuan of Hong Kong, who clocked 12.820 minutes and 12.734 minutes in both the rounds to settle for a silver medal. The third position was taken by Farina Shawati of Malaysia with a time of 12.552 and 12.342.
    Another Indian -- Kezia Vargheese -- missed the bronze medal by a whisker, finishing fourth in this event. Deborah, however, lost the gold medal in her favourite event -- Keirin -- and managed to win silver ahead of her teammate Kezia Varghesse, who bagged the bronze. The 21-year-old Deborah turned out to be the star performer for the country, having clinched three gold medals and one silver medal.
    In the Men's Elite Keirin event, Indian cyclist Amarjeet Singh finished 8th, but in the Junior Keirin competition, Emerson won the bronze medal for India.
  • Rushiraj wins rapid fire pistol gold at ISSF Junior World Cup
    Indian shooters continued their impressive show in the ISSF Junior World Cup with Rushiraj Barot striking gold in the junior men's 25m rapid fire pistol event on day three of the competition at Gabala in Azerbaijan on 20thSeptember.
  • India bag five medals on day four of Junior Shooting World Cup
    India added five more medals, on day four of the ISSF Junior World Cup in Gabala, Azerbaijan. With this, India's medals tally in the junior shooting world cup swells to 23. India has won a total of nine gold medals in the competition to be ranked second in the medals tally behind Russia.
    India won two team gold medals in the men’s and women’s 25 meter pistol events respectively. The third gold of the day came in the individual men’s 25 meter pistol competition.
  • BCCI appoints new selection panel with MSK Prasad as Chief Selector
    BCCI has appointed a new selection panel. Ajay Shirke has been re-elected as the BCCI secretary. MSK Prasad, former wicket-keeper has been elected as the chief-selector. Other members include Jatin Paranjpae, Devan Gandhi, Gagan Khoda and Sarandeep Singh. The decision was taken in the 87th Annual General Meeting of the BCCI in Mumbai.
  • Current AffairsIndia's 500th Test: Test captains felicitated
    India made its 500th Test appearance in Kanpur on 22ndSeptember. On this occasion, all former Indian captains were felicitated. The match played against New Zealand.
    India became only the fourth nation after England, Australia and West Indies to play 500 matches in the longest format of the game.
    India made their Test debut way back in 1932 under the leadership of Colonel CK Nayudu against England. An Indian cricket team toured England under the title of the “All-India” team and played a three-day match that took place at the iconic Lord’s.
    India’s international batting journey began when Janardan Navle faced the first delivery of this Test match. Indian batsmen in reply, didn’t show much resistance as the British colony’s first ever Test innings wrapped up at a score of 189 runs. Skipper Nayudu top scored the chart with 40 runs.

    A forgettable ton: In 1967, the Test match at Birmingham between England and India marked the latter’s 100th Test appearance. The team led by Nawab of Pataudi.

    Run feast in 200th: India’s tour of Pakistan in 1982-83 season saw India’s 200th Test match.

    300th brings cheer: It took India almost 14 years to travel their way from 200th to 300th Test appearances. It played in Gujarat Stadium in Ahmedabad in 1996 witnessed another milestone in Indian cricket. The team led by Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar.

    400th Test- it also played in Ahmedabad, against West Indies. Indian team led by Rahul Dravid.
  • India 3rd in ICC ODI standings, Kohli 2nd in batting chart
    India were placed third in the latest ICC ODI rankings released in Dubai on 23rd September. With 110 points, they were behind Australia and New Zealand. While the Aussies have 124 points, New Zealand earned 113 points.
    In the batting list, India's mainstay Virat Kohli holds the second position with 813 points in his kitty. He is behind South African talisman AB de Villiers, and a place ahead of another experienced Protea, Hashim Amla.
    Besides Kohli, Rohit Sharma, who is placed 7th, and Shikhar Dhawan, who is 8th, are the other Indians in the batting list dominated by the South Africans and the Asian giants. No Indian bowler features in the ODI chart, and there is no one from the country in the all rounder list as well.
  • Velavan Senthilkumar wins U-19 Asian title
    India's emerging player Velavan Senthilkumar bagged the Under-19 Asian Junior Individual squash championship title in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He beat Jordan's Mohammad Al-Sarraj to claim the title on 23rd September. The Chennai lad is the second Indian to win the title after Ravi Dixit in 2010.
  • ICC introduces changes to its Code of Conduct
    The International Cricket Council has, ICC, introduced changes to its Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel and the DRS Umpire’s Call interpretation, effective from September 22nd. There has been no change to the list of offences in the Code of Conduct, or the current penalty regime of warnings, fines and suspensions applicable to each offence.
    But players who have breached the code will now also accumulate Demerit Points, which can see repeat offenders suspended. Demerit Points will remain with a player for two years, and all players will start with a zero balance to coincide with the introduction of these changes.
    The new DRS playing conditions relating to the LBW ‘Umpire’s Call” will also come into effect, with the first match to be played under these regulations the one-day international between South Africa and Ireland in Benoni on 25thSeptember.
  • BCCI sets in place qualification criteria for selectors
    The Board of Control for Cricket in India, BCCI, has set in place strict qualification criteria, such as international experience and an age cap of 60 years for appointment of selectors.

    The board's criteria require the applicants to have international cricket experience.

    The candidate should have represented the Indian team either in a Test or a One Day International match for senior selection panel and more than 50 first class matches in India to be considered for a position in the junior national selection committee. The board also said, candidates should be under the age of 60 and be willing to undergo a medical examination, if selected.

    Aiming to steer clear of the conflict of interest issue, the BCCI criteria stated, the candidate should not be part of any IPL team management or part of any other league in the world. It further added that candidates, if selected should not be associated directly or indirectly with any cricket coaching academy or another such organisation associated with the game. Those who have already completed 4 years as a National selector in BCCI, will also not be eligible.
  • Deepa Malik wins Silver in women's Shot-Put event in Rio ParalympicsCurrent Affairs
    Deepa Malik has created history by winning silver medal in Women's shotput at Rio Paralympics 2016. It is the first Medal by an Indian Woman in Paralympics games. It is India's 3rd medal in the ongoing games at Rio.
  • Javelin thrower Devendra Jhajharia wins gold at Rio Paralympics
    India's Devendra Jhajharia bettered his own world record to win gold in the men's javelin throw F46 event at the 2016 Rio Paralympics.

    Devendra won gold in the javelin event at the 2004 Athens Paralympics with a record throw of 62.15 metres, becoming only the second gold medallist at the Paralympics for India, and improved upon it with an attempt of 63.97 metres at the Olympic Stadium Engenhao, Rio on 13th September.

    Devendra competed in the event alongside fellow Indians Rinku Hooda and Sundar Singh Gurjar. Rinku finished fifth with a personal best of 54.39 metres in six attempts, while Sundar Singh Gurjar didn't start the event. Devendra took India's tally at this edition of the Paralympics to four medals-two golds, one silver and a bronze.

    The Rajasthan born athlete, with an amputated left hand, was awarded the Arjuna award in 2004 and the Padma Shri in 2012, becoming the first Paralympian to receive the honour.

    He was electrocuted while climbing a tree when he was eight years old and his left hand had to be amputated. But that didn't deter him from pursuing his dreams. The track and field star won gold at the International Paralympic Committee's (IPC) Athletics World Championships in Lyon in 2013.

    He last participated in the Paralympics 12 years ago. The F46 event did not feature in the 2008 and the 2012 editions. Britain also set two world records at the Rio Paralympics on 13th September. Georgie Hermitage added 400m gold to her 100m title as she stormed to T37 victory in a new world mark of 1.00.43.
  • Indian cyclists bag 6 medals on opening day of Track Asia Cup 2016
    Indian cyclists put up a commendable show on the opening day of the Track Asia Cup 2016, bagging 6 medals, including three gold and two silver and one bronze, in New Delhi on 14th September.

    Deborah Herold and her team and took home two gold medals on day one at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex Velodrome.

    In the women elite, 500m Deborah won the gold, clocking 35.964 seconds. Mohd. Adnan Farina Shawati of Malaysia and Yin Yin from Hong Kong bagged the silver and bronze medals respectively.

    In the team sprint women elite event, the Indian team comprising Deborah Herold and Kezia Vargheese beat the team from Kazakhstan to bag the gold medal.

    A bronze medal was awarded to Rajkumari Devi, due to walkover at the women elite pursuit 3kms event. In the men elite team sprint event, the team from Iran bagged the gold medal while Malaysia and Kazakhstan bagged the silver and bronze medals respectively.

    India's junior team bagged a silver medal in the team sprint event beating Kazakhstan. The junior women team also bagged gold in the team sprint event. Another star for India was Alena Reji, who was taking part in her first international event as she won silver.

    At the end of the first day of the championship, India and Malaysia share the top spot with three gold, two silver, one bronze medals each.
  • Devendra Jhajharia wins gold medal, betters own world record
    India's Devendra Jhajharia has won gold in the men's javelin throw, F46 event at the 2016 Rio Paralympics. He becomes only the second gold medallist at the Paralympics for the country. Devender improved his own 2004 record of 62.15 metres, with a world-record throw of 63.97 metr. He had also secured the gold medal in the javelin event at the 2004 Athens Paralympics. Devendra took India's tally at this edition of the Paralympics to four medals -- two golds, one silver and a bronze.

  • Deposits under Jan Dhan Yojna cross Rs. 42,000 cr mark
    Deposits under the Jan Dhan Yojna, the flagship financial inclusion scheme, have crossed Rs. 42,000 crore-mark. Percentage of zero-balance accounts has fallen below 25 per cent. Government will use such accounts for direct benefit transfers with a view check pilferage. Since April, there has been an addition of about Rs 6,000 crore under the Prime Minister Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY). At the beginning of the financial year, the deposit base was about Rs 36,000 crore and it increased to Rs 42,504 crore as on September 7.

    The balance in Jan Dhan accounts has been steadily rising and the government will use such accounts for direct benefit transfers with a view check pilferage, officials said, while adding that these balances have stayed with the banks for a long time.

    As many as 24.27 crore accounts have been opened under the scheme and the percentage of zero balance has come down to 24.43 per cent.

    Besides, the objective is to inculcate banking habits among unbanked population. There were reports that some bankers have deliberately deposited small amount in PMJDY accounts so that they do not remain under the category of zero balance.

    PMJDY, a national mission on financial inclusion, was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his Independence Day - 2014 speech and was formally launched by him on August 28 of same year with the main objective of covering all households with at least one bank account per household across the country.
  • Serena Williams sets women's record of 307 victories in grand slams
    In Tennis, world number one Serena Williams has created history by setting a record of most number of Grand Slam matches wins by a woman in the Open era. In the US Open, the American defeated Johanna Larsson of Sweden, to progress to the pre-quarterfinals and surpass Martina Navratilova's record of 306 wins. Serena is now tied with Roger Federer who holds the record for men.

    Serena is eying to clinch a 23rd Grand Slam Singles title. If she wins, she will become the most successful woman in the Open Era. The American is currently equal with Steffi Graf with 22 major Singles titles.

    Others who have entered the Singles fourth round include Andy Murray, Stanislas Wawrinka, Agnieszka Radwanska, Simona Halep, Juan Martin Del Potro and Kei Nishikori.

    In Mixed Doubles, Rohan Bopanna and his Canadian team-mate Gabriela Dabrowski stormed into the quarterfinals. However, Leander Paes and Martina Hingis made an exit. In Women's Doubles, the seventh seeded Indo-Czech pair of Sania Mirza and Barbora Strycova advanced to the pre-quarterfinals.
  • 1st T20I: Australia hit world record 263 to beat Sri Lanka
    Current AffairsOpener Glenn Maxwell's blistering century in Australia's world record 263 powered the visitors to a comprehensive 85-run win over Sri Lanka in the first Twenty20 international in Pallekele on 6th September.

    Australia, who broke Sri Lanka's nine-year record of 260/6 against Kenya in 2007, restricted the hosts to 178 for nine in 20 overs to take the lead in the two-match series.
  • Mariyappan Thangavelu wins gold for India at Rio Paralympics
    India has won its first Gold medal at the ongoing Rio Paralympic Games. Mariyappan Thangavelu brought laurels to the country as he finished first in the Men's High Jump T-42 event to give India its overall third Gold at the Games and the first after 12 years.
  • Angelique Kerber wins maiden US Open title
    Angelique Kerber won the US Open on 10th September, marking her rise to world number one with a gritty victory over Karolina Pliskova for her second Grand Slam title of the year. Germany's Kerber, the second seed, rallied from a break down in the third set to beat the hard-hitting 10th-seeded Czech.
