- Sania settles for bronze at World Badminton Championships
At the World Badminton championships, Saina Nehwal has settled for a bronze medal. In the first women's singles semi-final at Glasgow on 26th August, she lost to Nozomi Okuhara of Japan in three games. Okuhara is the first shuttler from Japan to reach the finals of World Championship. Saina had won a silver medal two years ago in the World championship at Jakarta.
- Ronaldo First to be named Men's Player of the Year for Three Times
Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo won The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Men's Player of the Year award for the 2016/17 season. Ronaldo received 482 points in the poll, with Messi (141 votes) and Buffon (109 votes) finishing second and third respectively. - P V Sindhu bags silver at world championship
P V Sindhu's gallant effort to become India's first ever World Champion ended in a heart- wrenching defeat against Japan's Nozomi Okuhara in an epic final on 27th August.
In the longest match of the tournament, which tested the physical and mental strength of both the players, Sindhu lost 19-21 22-20 20-22 after battling hard for one hour and 49 minutes.
After closing the second game by winning an incredible 73-shot rally, Sindhu saved one championship point in the decider but it was the Rio Olympic bronze medallist who had the last laugh. - India wins Series against Srilanka
An all-round performance helped India beat Sri Lanka by six wickets in the 3rd ODI in Pallekele on 27th August. India on 14th August completed a 3-0 clean sweep of Sri Lanka with an innings and 171-run defeat in the third and final cricket Test at Pallekele, Kandy. Hardik Pandya was declared Man of the Match while Shikhar Dhawan emerged as Man of the Series. None of the three matches lasted five days, with the final one being the shortest, lasting just two and a half days.
Records- This is the first time India have whitewashed the opposition in an away Test series of 3 or more matches.
- This win (innings and 171 runs) is India's second biggest away win. The previous best was against Bangladesh (innings and 239 runs), at Dhaka 10 years ago.
- Virat Kohli is now second on the list of captains with the most wins after their first 29 Tests at the helm. In comparison to Kohli’s 19 wins, Ricky Ponting and Steve Waugh had 21 Test wins each.
- This was only the second time that Sri Lanka have been whitewashed at home. The previous instance was against Australia in 2004.
- Committee of Administrators seeks removal of current BCCI office-bearers
The Committee of Administrators (COA) has sought the removal of current BCCI office-bearers, including acting president, secretary and treasurer for non-compliance of Lodha Panel reforms. In its fifth Status Report submitted to the Supreme Court, the two-member COA comprising Vinod Rai and Diana Edulji - has asked that "governance, management and administration" of the board be handed over to them along with a professional group headed by CEO Rahul Johri till the elections are held.
In the 26-page report , the biggest takeaway was that acting president CK Khanna, secretary Amitabh Choudhary and treasurer Aniruddh Chaudhry should be removed just like former BCCI president Anurag Thakur and secretary Ajay Shirke, who were ousted for failing to ensure implementation of Lodha reforms.
The report contends that the current office-bearers are not in position to make good on their undertakings and ensure that reforms mandated by the apex Court is implemented. The COA also mentioned that the Supreme Court order on July 24 was "deliberately misconstrued" during the BCCI's Special General Meeting on July 26 where office-bearers asked CEO Rahul Johri, the administrative staff and the legal team to leave the meeting.
The status report mentions about BCCI's failure to appoint an Ombudsman since Justice AP Shah's tenure ended in September, 2016. The other issue mentioned is "failure to adopt new conflict of interest" rules.
The report mentions that there has been resistance to adopt a new fund disbursement policy as the addition of members would reduce the share of the existing units. - Lakshya Sen wins Bulgaria Open International Series
Young Indian shuttler Lakshya Sen on 17th August clinched the Bulgaria Open International Series title after notching up a hard-fought win over Croatia's Zvonimir Durkinjak in the men's singles final in Sofia, Bulgaria. - Virat Kohli continues to top ICC ODI rankings for batsmen
India captain Virat Kohli continued to be the world's top-ranked One-day batsman in the latest ICC ODI rankings, released in Dubai on 18th August.
Having 873 points in his kitty, Kohli will have a chance to increase the 12-point lead over second-placed Australian David Warner at the upcoming five-match ODI series against Sri Lanka, starting in Dambulla on 20th August. Other Indian batsmen in the top-15 are former skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni 12th, Shikhar Dhawan 13th and vice- captain Rohit Sharma 14th. However, no Indian bowler figure in the top-10 list. Pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar 13th is the lone Indian in top 15.
As for the ICC ODI Team Rankings, India are currently at number three and they would have to win the upcoming series at least by a 4-1 margin to ensure that they stay at that position, ahead of England.
At 114 points, India, even if win the series 3-2, will slip to 113 points and behind England on decimal points. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka will by eyeing the chance to seal direct qualification for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 during the upcoming series. - Justin Gatlin claims gold in Usain Bolt's 100-metre farewell race
American veteran Justin Gatlin won in the 100m world title in London. In the same race Usain Bolt wins Bronze. It is the last 100m race of Usain Bolt. Gatlin, who has served two doping bans and won silvers behind Bolt at the last two world championships, clocked 9.92 seconds, with teammate Christian Coleman winning silver in 9.94sec.

- Kerala High Court lifts BCCI's life ban on Sreesanth
Kerala High Court on 7th August lifted the life ban imposed on cricketer S Sreesanth by the BCCI in the wake of the 2013 IPL spot-fixing scandal.
In his order, Justice A Muhamed Mustaque also set aside all proceedings against Sreesanth initiated by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
The court had earlier sought the BCCI's stand on the plea by the cricketer challenging the life ban imposed upon him by the game's governing body following the scandal.
The BCCI had filed a counter-affidavit on the issue in the court in response to the plea by Sreesanth, who had challenged the life ban despite a court dropping all charges against the Sreesanth.
All the 36 accused, including Sreesanth, Ankeet Chavan and Ajit Chandila were let off in the spot-fixing case by a Patiala House court in July 2015. The BCCI, however, had refused to alter its disciplinary decision even after the verdict. - 2 silver, 6 bronze medals for India at Asian Junior boxing
India finished the Asian Junior Boxing Championships in Puerto Princesa, Philippines on 7th August with two silver and six bronze medals. Satender Rawat and Mohit Khatana settled for silver medals after losing their final bouts in the Championships.
Satender lost to Uzbekistan's Almatov Shokrukh in the 80 plus kilogram category in a split verdict, while Mohit went down to Kazakhstan's Togambay Sagyndyk in the 80 kilogram category.
Earlier, Ankit Narwal, Bhavesh Kattimani , Sidhartha Malik , Vinit Dahiya , Akshay Siwach and Aman Sehrawat claimed bronze medals after losing in the semifinals in their respective weight categories. - Olympics: LA approves host city contract for 2028 Games
Los Angeles city council rubber-stamped the host city contract on 11th August, paving the way for bringing the 2028 Summer Olympics to southern California and ceding the 2024 Games to Paris.
The members voted 12-0 in favour of signing off on the memorandum of understanding and host city contract documents which would see the city host the Summer Games for the third time in history.
Los Angeles started off competing with other cities around the world for the 2024 Games, but eventually all bidders except for Los Angeles and Paris dropped out.
Last month the International Olympic Committee had approved the idea of awarding both the 2024 and 2028 Games simultaneously. - Davinder Singh Kang Qualify for Javelin Throw Finals
Davinder Singh Kang becomes the first Indian to qualify for the final round of the javelin throw World Championships. He had an 82.22m in his opening throw and then came up with 82.14m in his second. He is the first ever Indian who is qualified in the men’s javelin throw final round in any World Championship - Ravindra Jadeja tops ICC ranking among all-rounders in Test Cricket
India's Ravindra Jadeja on 8th August edged out Bangladesh's Shakib Al Hasan to claim the top-rank among all-rounders apart from maintaining top position in the bowlers' chart in the latest ICC test match rankings. Jadeja currently has 438 points among the all-rounders while Shakib has 431 points. Cheteshwar Pujara gained a place to be third among batsmen while Virat Kohli maintained his fifth position.
Steve Smith and Joe Root are still at No 1 and 2 position in batsmen rankings. The significant gainer is Ajinkya Rahane, who has climbed five places to be sixth in the list. Opener K L Rahul is at number 11 with 737 points. In the bowlers' list Ravichandran Ashwin dropped a place to be third with Jimmy Anderson a notch below Jadeja. Pacers Mohammad Shami at 20th and Umesh Yadav at 22nd have also made notable gains. - Shiva, Manoj won Gold at Czech Boxing Tournament
Indian boxers at the 48th Grand Prix Usti Nad Labem, clinched five gold, two silver and one bronze medal at the event in the Czech Republic.
World Championships bronze-medallist Shiva Thapa in 60 kg, former Commonwealth Games gold-medallist Manoj Kumar in 69 kg, Amit Phangal in 52 kg, Gaurav Bidhuri in 56 kg and Satish Kumar in +91 kg category claimed gold medals after winning their respective summit clashes
Kavinder Bisht in 52 kg and Manish Panwar in 81 kg settled for silver medals. Earlier, Sumit Sangwan had claimed a bronze in 91 kg category after going down in the semifinals. - India bags 24 medals at Jordan Open TT
India has bagged a rich haul of 24 medals at the Jordan Junior and Cadet Open table tennis tournament. The tally includes seven Gold, seven Silver and 10 Bronze medals. In the event held at Amman, India ended as the second best finishers. - Summer Olympics: Los Angeles agrees to host 2028 Games; Paris gets 2024
Los Angeles formally announced its bid for the 2028 Summer Olympics on 31st July after agreeing on a deal that paves the way for Paris to host in 2024.
The Los Angeles Olympic and Paralympic bid committee in cooperation with the International Olympic Committee (IOC), announced it on 30th July. The LA bid committee said in a statement that Los Angeles will host the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games 2028. Los Angeles had been in a race with Paris to host the 2024 Games, with the winner to be named by the IOC on September 13 in Lima. - Caeleb Dressel becomes first ever Swimmer to win three gold medals
The 20-year-old Caeleb Dresselas of America became the first swimmer to win three gold medals on a single night at either the worlds or the Olympics. Caeleb Dressel accomplished this feat at 2017 FINA World Aquatics Championships in Budapest, Hungary.
