  • Wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt’s London Olympics bronze medal upgraded to silver
    Current AffairsIndian wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt's bronze medal from the London Olympics has been upgraded to silver after second-place finisher late Besik Kudukhov of Russia was stripped off his medal for failing a dope test. As a result, Yogeshwar, who had bagged a bronze medal in men's 60kg freestyle category in the London Games, has now joined Sushil Kumar as the other silver medallist wrestler from the 2012 Olympics.
  • R Ashwin remains highest-placed Indian bowler
    Off-spinner R Ashwin dropped a rung to 3rd but remained the highest-placed Indian bowler, while Ajinkya Rahane remained static at 8th in the batsmen's list of the latest ICC Test rankings issued on 31st August.

    South Africa pace bowler Dale Steyn stormed back to the number-one position rankings for Test bowlers after producing a match-winning performance in the Centurion Test that helped his side complete a 204-run victory over New Zealand.

    Steyn has now been number-one for a record 263 Tests with Muralidaran coming second in the list at 214 weeks. In terms of days, Steyn has spent 2,320 days at the top, the most by any bowler since World War II. Meanwhile, the 1-0 series win has pushed South Africa up two places to fifth in the Team Rankings, while New Zealand have slipped two places to seventh. India stand 2nd in the list behind Pakistan.
  • Alex Hales, England create records
    England set a new world record of highest total in a One-Day International match, as the hosts put a mighty total of 444 against Pakistan in the third ODI match at Nottingham. The previous record was held by Sri Lanka who had scored 443 against Netherlands at Amstelveen in July 2006.

    Alex Hales became the highest scorer for England in ODIs with 171 from 122 balls with 22 fours and four sixes. In doing so, the right handed batsman broke a 23-year-old-record held by Robin Smith against Australia, who remained unbeaten after scoring 167 in 1993.
  • Rio Olympics comes to an end after 16 days of sporting spectacle
    Current Affairs31st Summer Olympics, hosted by Brazilian City, Rio de Janeiro ended after 16 days of sporting spectacle. The games had nearly 11,000 participants from 205 countries, including a first-ever refugee team, featuring in 306 events of 42 sporting disciplines. In all 65 Olympic and 19 World Records were broken during the course of games.

    India also fielded its biggest-ever contingent, and had a few firsts to its name. India's first medal in Rio came from freestyle wrestler Sakshi Malik. She bagged the Bronze medal in 58 kg weight class and became the first Indian female wrestler to get a medal.

    The second and last medal of the Games came from Badminton where, PV Sindhu settled for a Silver. Sindhu became the first Indian Woman to win a Silver medal and the first Indian shuttler to reach the Final.

    Gymnast Dipa Karmnakar also brought laurels to the country as she finished 4th in Vault Final missing out on a Bronze by a whisker.

    Steeplechaser Lalita Babar also made the country proud by becoming the first Indian athlete in 32 years to enter the Finals of an individual event of the Games in track category.

    American swimmer Michael Phelps cemented his status as the most successful Olympian of all time by winning five gold and one silver at Rio, taking his tally to 28 medals that includes 23 gold. This was Phelps final Olympic appearance.

    In Track, Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt claimed his legend status as he took the 9th career Gold. He completed an unprecedented 'triple-triple' by winning the 100m, 200m and 4x100m titles at a third successive Olympics. He had earlier announced his retirement after the Games.

    American swimmer Katie Ledecky, won four gold and a silver at Rio, setting new world records in the 400m and 800m freestyle events.

    Brazil, the five time World Football Champion, claimed their first ever Olympic Gold in their history. Their captain Neymar Jr scored the winning penalty in the final against Germany.

    Tennis witnessed big upsets, as both Men's and Women's number one, Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams crashed out in the initial stages. Britains' Andy Murray took the men's singles title while an unknown name from Puerto Rico, Monica Puig bagged the women's singles title.

    United States ended the Games at the top of the medals tally. They finished with 46 Gold, 37 Silver and 38 Bronze. Great Britain finished on second spot with 27 Gold, 23 Silver and 17 bronze. China follows on third, with a tally of 26 Gold, 18 Silver and 26 Bronze. India finished at joint 67th position.

    Other countries who won their first-ever medal at Olympics were Fiji, Jordan and Kosovo they all claimed gold. Five other nations had won medals in the past, but this edition of the Games was the first to see them reach the top of the podium were Bahrain, Puerto Rico, Singapore, Vietnam and Tajikistan.

    The 2020 Olympics will be held in Tokyo, Japan.
  • Rio Paralympics 2016: Russia banned after losing appeal
    Russia will not compete at next month’s Paralympics in Rio after losing an appeal against a ban imposed for state-sponsored doping. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) upheld the International Paralympic Committee's (IPC) ban on all Russian competitors. The IPC made the decision in light of the McLaren report, which detailed a state-sponsored doping programme operated by Russia.

    The Paralympics begin on 7 September. The IPC's decision to ban the entire Russian team was proportionate in the circumstances, according to the CAS panel, which said it would publish the full grounds for its decision later.
  • Kabaddi World Cup 2016 to be held in Gujarat
    The International Kabaddi Federation (IKF) has announced that the 2016 World Cup will be held in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The tournament is set to take place from October 7 to October 22.

    Gujarat will play host to 12 teams from around the world including India, USA, Canada, UK, Australia, Iran, Poland, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Korea, Japan and Kenya. A special consideration of the IKF in inviting these countries is to make the 2016 Kabaddi World Cup representative of all the five geographies of the Olympic Games.
  • Sports Ministry constitutes panel to inquire into Jaisha's allegations
    Sports Ministry on 24th August constituted a two member committee to inquire into the allegations of Marathon runner O.P.Jaisha. The committee will submit its report in seven days. Jaisha collapsed at the end of the marathon run in Rio Olympics 2016, as there were no Indian officials present to provide her water and energy drinks at refreshment points. However, officials from all other countries were present there to provide refreshments to their runners at designated points.
  • Abhinav Bindra to Head NRAI Review Committee on Rio Debacle
    India's first and only individual Olympic gold-medallist Abhinav Bindra was on 25th August named Chairman of a five-member review committee to probe the shooters' Rio Games debacle. He however refused himself from questioning them as he was himself a part of the team.

    The National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) said the mandate of the committee is to examine and identify the causes behind shooting not securing any medals at the Rio Olympics. The committee is also mandated to recommend concrete steps that NRAI must immediately undertake to ensure that this is not repeated in future Olympics.

    Other members of the committee include former tennis player Manisha Malhotra, who has also been appointed Convenor of the committee, NRAI Secretary Rajiv Bhatia and two journalists. The NRAI Review Committee has been asked to submit its report within a maximum period of four weeks.
  • Cristiano Ronaldo crowned UEFA Best Player in Europe
    Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has won the UEFA Best Player in Europe Award after winning both, last season's Champions League and Euro 2016 with Portugal. Ronaldo received the accolade for the second time in his career after finishing ahead of Real team-mate Gareth Bale and Atletico Madrid's Antoine Griezmann.

    Ronaldo struck the winning spot-kick as Real claimed a record 11th European Cup title, beating city rivals Atletico on penalties in May, before leading his country to Euro 2016 glory. The award was voted for by journalists from each of UEFA's 55 member associations. Norway striker Ada Hegerberg won the women's award.
  • India lost in 1st T-20 against Westindies
    In the first T-20 match against Westindies, India lost with only one run. West indies, batting first made 245 runs,in reply India could make 244.

  • Jamaica's Usain Bolt wins 100 meters Final, retains title of "Fastest Man Alive"
    Current Affairs Jamaica's speedster Usain Bolt has retained his coveted title "Fastest man alive on the planet". Bolt won the 100m Final of Rio Olympics on 15th August, to have the third Olympic Gold medal in the event, an unprecedented feat. In his Final appearance in an Olympic, the reigning World Champion sprinted to glory as he recorded his season best time of 9.81 seconds. Usain Bolt has all the sprinting world record to his name including the 100m, 200m and 4x100m. With 2 Gold medal in each event he is trying to achieve 'Triple Treble'.
  • ICC Test Ranking: Ajinkya Rahane enters top-10 in batsman's list
    Indian batsman Ajinkya Rahane jumped three places to enter the top-10 in batsman's list while Ravichandran Ashwin maintained his pole position among all-rounders in the latest Test rankings released by the International Cricket Council (ICC).

    Rahane, who was 11th in the last list is currently 8th and the only Indian in the top-10 led by Australian skipper Steve Smith. India's Test captain Virat Kohli dropped three places from 13th to 16th place.

    In the bowlers' list, Ashwin and Jadeja were static at 2nd and 6th position respectively with Jimmy Anderson on top of the list.
  • Dipa Karmakar finishes fourth, misses bronze by whisker
    India continues to be without a medal in the Rio Olympics, even after the ninth day of the events and with just one week remaining. Dipa Karmakar, who had created history by becoming the first Indian to qualify for a Gymnastics Final at the Games, missed by a whisker from winning a medal in Women's Vault.

    Dipa, who did a Produnova, a tough front handspring and two front somersaults, finished fourth with an average score of 15.066. The Bronze was given to Swiss Giuila Steingruber.
  • Rio Olympics: Sakshi Malik wins first medal
    Freestyle wrestler Sakshi Malik has ended India's wait of its first medal of the Rio Olympics. The 23-year old Haryana girl bagged the Bronze medal, in the 58 kg weight class after recording a sensational comeback win over Aisuluu Tynybekova of Kyrgyzstan.

    Trailing 0-5, Sakshi displayed exceptional skills to win the match, 8-5, in the final seconds and become the first ever Indian woman grappler to win an Olympic medal.
  • Shuttler PV Sindhu enters Women's Singles final
    India's P V Sindhu created history on 18th August by becoming the first Indian to enter the finals of the Women's Singles in an Olympics badminton tournament. In the semi-final in Rio, she defeated Japan's Nozomi Okuhara. She is now assured of at least a Silver Medal.
  • Wrestler Narsingh Yadav banned for 4 years
    Indian wrestler Narsingh Yadav was ousted from the Olympics and slapped with a four-year ban for flunking a dope test after Court of Arbitration for Sport overturned the clean chit given to him by the National Anti-Doping Agency

    The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) had appealed against the NADA all-clear to Narsingh at CAS, three days ahead of his scheduled opening bout at the Olympics. Narsing Yadav’s name had appeared in the official Olympic schedule after he underwent the mandatory weigh-in. He was to take on France's Zelimkhan Khadjiev in the qualification round but the CAS verdict has dashed all his hopes. The embattled 74kg category grappler has maintained all along that his scandalous dope test was a result of conspiracy by rivals who spiked his food or drinks.
  • Sindhu won silver in Olympics
    India’s P.V. Sindhu on 19th August lost to Spain's world number one Carolina Marin but had created history by becoming the first Indian shuttler to enter the Olympics Final. PV Sindhu has won India's second medal of the 2016 Rio Olympics.
  • Abhijeet Gupta retains Commonwealth Chess championship crown
    Current AffairsGrandmaster and former world junior champion Abhijeet Gupta has added another feather to his cap by retaining the Commonwealth Chess championship crown in Colombo, Sri Lanka, while International Master Tania Sachdev also finished with a gold medal.In fact, all the medals in the senior category were won by the Indians players.

    Grandmasters S L Narayanan and Deep Chakkravarthy got the silver and bronze medals respectively in the open section, while Mary Ann Gomes and Kiran Manisha Mohanty reached the podium in the women's section. For Tania, it was a maiden Commonwealth gold, although she had won other medals at international events.
  • Russia banned from Rio Paralympics over doping
    The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) on 7th August banned all Russians from its own Games next month because of the widespread doping culture that it says has polluted sport in the country.

    The IPC announced the decision to suspend the Russian Paralympic Committee in Rio, with its president Philip Craven saying that Russia's Paralympians were part of a broken system that stems from the Russian government. Russia immediately announced it would be appealing against the ban to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
  • Dipika Pallikal wins PSA Australian Open
    India's top squash player Dipika Pallikal won the PSA Australian Open in Melbourne on 12th August. She defeated Mayar Hany of Egypt in final. This is Dipika’s first title of the year. Pallikal's previous title came in February 2015 when she won the Winnipeg Winter Open in Canada.
  • Michael Phelps wins 22nd Olympic gold in 200 individual medley
    American Swimmer Michael Phelps bagged his 22nd Olympic Gold on12th August when he won the 200 metres medley event at the Olympics Aquatic Stadium in Rio de Janeiro.

    The win gave Phelps his 13th individual gold medal, an Olympic record that burnishes his title as the world's most decorated Olympian. The Gold was Phelps' fourth of the Rio Games. He had, earlier, won the 4X200 metres freestyle relay, 200 metres Butterfly and 4X100 metres Freestyle Relay.

    United States, now, has 16 Gold, 12 Silver and 10 Bronze in its kitty and is at the top of the medals tally. China is second with 11 Gold, 8 Silver and 11 Bronze, while Japan is third with 7 Gold, 2 Silver and 13 Bronze. India is yet to win a medal.
  • India to host Kabaddi World Cup in October Current Affairs
    India will host the Kabaddi World Cup this year, featuring 12 countries, in October. USA, Canada, UK, Australia, Iran, Poland, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Korea, Japan and Kenya will be playing in the event the dates for which will be declared later.

    President, International Kabaddi Federation, Janardan Singh Gehlot said, the Federation is immensely proud that Kabaddi is growing in popularity so fast and is all set to breakthrough on a global stage with the 2016 Kabaddi World Cup scheduled in India. Kabaddi became a part of Asian Games in the year 1990 and India have won all the gold medals since.
  • Narsingh Yadav gets NADA's clean chit; to particiapte in Rio Olympics
    National Anti Doping Agency, NADA has given clean chit to wrestler Narsingh Yadav to participate in Rio Olympics beginning 5th of this month. The NADA disciplinary panel has exonerated Yadav from charges of violating anti doping rules of NADA.

    According to the Director General, NADA Navin Agarwal the wrestler is a victim of sabotage done by a competitor and there is no fault and negligence on Narsingh Yadav's part.

    The panel is of the opinion that one time ingestion by Yadav was not within his knowledge.
  • Novak Djokovic wins ATP Toronto Masters
    Novak Djokovic has won the ATP Toronto Masters. He defeated Kei Nishikori in the final for his 66th career title. The world number one claimed his fourth Canadian title.
  • India to play two T20 matches against West Indies in USA
    In an effort to reach out to new markets and audiences, the Board of Control for Cricket in India - BCCI announced that India will play two T20 International matches against the West Indies in the United States of America.

    According to the BCCI President Mr. Anurag Thakur such a series will be developed into an annual cricketing event in the United States.

    Another major decision taken by the Committee included the appointment of a four member committee headed by Retired Supreme Court Justice Markandey Katju to advise and counsel the Board on the implications of Justice Lodha Committee Report.
  • IOC agrees to add five new sports for Tokyo 2020 Olympics
    The International Olympic Committee (IOC) agreed to add Baseball-Softball, Karate, Skateboard, Climbing Sports and surfing in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The decision was taken by the 129th IOC session being held in Rio de Janeiro.

    The Organising Committee for the Tokyo 2020 Games proposed the five new sports in response to the new flexibility provided by Olympic Agenda 2020.

    IOC President Thomas Bach said, Tokyo 2020’s balanced proposal fulfils all of the goals of the Olympic Agenda 2020 recommendation that allows more sports to be included.

    Taken together, the five sports are an innovative combination of established and emerging, youth-focused events that are popular in Japan and will add to the legacy of the Tokyo Olympics. The additional sports in Tokyo will not impact the athlete or event quotas of existing Olympic sports or be binding on future host cities. The inclusion of the new sports will add 18 events.
  • Brazil Olympics kicked off
    The three-hour gala from the iconic Maracana Stadium is a showcase for Brazil's history, culture, diversity and hopes.

    The 2016 Summer Olympics officially known as the Games of the XXXI Olympiad, and commonly known as Rio 2016.

    The Games is formally running from 5 August to 21 August 2016.

    More than 11,000 athletes from 206 National Olympic Committees (NOCs), including first time entrants Kosovo and South Sudan, are taking part.

    With 306 sets of medals, the games features 28 Olympic sports—including rugby sevens and golf, which were added by the International Olympic Committee in 2009.

    These sporting events is taking place at 33 venues in the host city and at five venues in the cities of Sao Paulo (Brazil's largest city), Belo Horizonte, Salvador, Brasília (Brazil's capital), and Manaus.

    Rio became the first South American city to host the Summer Olympics. These are the first games to be held in a Portuguese-speaking country, the first to be held entirely during the host country's winter season and the first since 2000 (and third overall) to be held in the Southern Hemisphere.
  • US got first gold medal in Rio Olympics
    Olympics' first Gold Medal goes to America. In women's 10 metre Air Rifle event, Verginia Fresher won the Gold with 208 points. In this event, China won both the Silver and the Bronze.

    Indian rower Dattu Baban Bhokanal entered the quarterfinals of the Men's Single Sculls in his qualifying round. In the first heat of the day, Armyman Bhokanal who is India's sole competitor finished third in the 2000 metre race with a timing of 7 minutes and 21.67 seconds.
