- Mumbai Indians win IPL title for third time
In Cricket, Mumbai Indians lifted the Indian Premier League trophy for the third time, as they recorded a scintillating 1-run win against Rising Pune Supergiant in the title clash at Hyderabad on 21st May. Krunal Pandya was named man of the match. - Indian eves win 4 nation women's cricket tournament
Indian eves have won the four nation women's cricket tournament played in South Africa. In the final on 21t May, India beat hosts South Africa by 8 wickets with 102 balls remaining. Chasing 157 run target, Indian women's team scored 160 for 2 in 33 overs.
India's Poonam Rout was declared player of the match while opening bat Dipti Sharma was declared player of the series. With this win, Mithali Raj became the first Indian and third women cricket captain in the world to lead 100 One-day Internationals. - R Vaishali wins gold in Asian Blitz Chess Championship
India's R Vaishali won the women's title with eight points from nine rounds in the Asian Continental Blitz Chess Championship in Chengdu, China. She defeated Padmini Rout, Odisha. The Asian Continental Blitz chess championship is hosted by China.
- R Ashwin won the International Cricketer of the Year award
India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin on 24th May won the coveted International Cricketer of the Year award at the CEAT Cricket Rating (CCR) International awards 2017. The award was presented to Ashwin by former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar and Harsh Goenka, Chairman of RPG Enterprises, at a function held at the Cricket Club of India in Mumbai.
Ashwin has taken 99 wickets in the past 12 months.
Batsman Shubhman Gill won the young player of the year award for his performance during the India-England Under-19 ODI series played in Mumbai. - ICC Cricket Committee recommends DRS for T20 Internationals
The ICC Cricket Committee chaired by India's head coach Anil Kumble has made a host of recommendations at its annual meeting in London concerning future international cricket.
One of the notable recommendations is the use of DRS for all T20 Internationals. Another important recommendation is to give power to on-field umpires to send-off players in response to the most serious incidents of player's misconduct, such as violence on the field.
The committee expressed unanimous support for the implementation of a Test cricket competition. It also reiterated its full support for cricket being involved in the Olympic Games.
If the ICC Chief Executives' Committee approves these recommended changes, the new ICC playing conditions will come into effect from October 1 this year. - India win 1 gold, 5 silver & 4 bronze in Asian Wrestling Championship
India finished their Asian Wrestling Championship campaign on a resounding note in New Delhi with Sumit winning a silver medal in the 125 kg category on the concluding day of the continental event.
In the gold medal round, Sumit lost to Yadollah Mohammadkazem Mohebi of Iran 2-6 to settle for the second position.
The Indian wrestlers overall bagged 10 medals comprising a gold, five silver and four bronze. This bettered their tally of nine medals in the last edition of the Championship at Bangkok. - Rafael Nadal wins 5th Madrid Open title
Rafael Nadal won fifth Madrid Open title after his Barcelona Open and Monte Carlo Masters titles. He defeated Dominic Thiem in final. He has won 14 times the Grand Slam titles. - India’s Women Cricketers sets new World Record
Indian Women cricket openers has created a new record. The partnership of Deepti Sharma and Poonam Raut scored 320 in 45.3 overs to become the world’s first pair, to achieve a 300-run opening-wicket partnership in One-Day Internationals (ODIs). The earlier best partnership for the first wicket in men’s cricket was 286 scored by Sri Lanka’s Upul Tharanga and Sanath Jayasuriya against England in 2006. Deepti Sharma’s 188 runs is now the second highest score in women’s one-day International - India on top at ICC test rankings
India has retained its top position in the latest ICC Test rankings, released. With 123 points, Kohli led side is six points ahead over the second placed South Africa.
India has gained one ranking point while South Africa has leaped from 109 to 117 points to reduce the gap to six points with the number one side. 23 points seperate India and Australia who are at the third position.
England has stayed in fourth position followed by New Zealand at 5th, Pakistan at 6th, Sri Lanka at 7th, West Indies at 8th and Bangladesh at 9th.
In recent matches, India registered series wins against West Indies when they visited the Caribbean last year while thumped New Zealand, England and Australia in home series.
Kohli’s side also defeated Bangladesh in a one-off Test match. Out of the 13 matches that they played on the home turf, India registered wins in 10 matches, lost 2 and one ended in a draw. - Indian compound archers claim men's team gold at World Cup
The Indian men's compound archery team on 20th May won the gold medal at the season's first World Cup in Shanghai, beating Colombia in the final. The team comprising Abhishek Verma, Chinna Raju Srither and Amanjeet Singh prevailed against the Colombians. India is seeded fourth in the tournament. This is the first major competition after last year's Rio Olympics. - Jhulan Goswami becomes world's highest wicket-taker in ODIs
Indian women's team fast bowler Jhulan Goswami on 9th May became the highest wicket-taker in history of ODIs. She eclipsed the decade-long record in the name of Australian Cathryn Fitzpatrick.
Jhulan Goswami dismissed South Africa's Raisibe Ntozakhe in an ongoing ODI to claim her 181st victim in the 50-over format, breaking Fitzpatrick's record of 180 wickets from 109 matches. Goswami had figures of 3/20 in 7.3 overs.
Jhulan's feat has been achieved in her 153rd match. She made her debut way back in 2002. Jhulan was also adjudged ICC's 'Women Cricketer of the Year' in 2007. Jhulan Goswami also has 40 wickets in 10 Tests and 50 wickets in 60 Twenty20 Internationals. - Shashank Manohar to complete term as ICC Chairman
The International Cricket Council (ICC) on confirmed that Shashank Manohar will continue as its Chairman until the end of his elected term which is June 2018.
Manohar had stepped down from the position in March, 2017 for "personal reasons".
However, he was persuaded by the Full Members and Associates to continue as the Chairman. - Justice Mudgal elected head of FIFA Governance Committee
Justice Mukul Mudgal was on 12th May elected as head of FIFA's governance committee at the world football governing body's 67th Congress in Bahrain's capital city of Manama.
Justice Mudgal's name was proposed by the FIFA Council for the vacant position of the governance chief after Miguel Maduro was reportedly 'fired' for his role in blocking Russian World Cup official Vitaly Mutko from retaining his seat on ruling council.
The FIFA Council proposed to the 67th FIFA Congress a list of members of both chambers of the independent Ethics Committee, the Disciplinary Committee, the Appeal Committee, the Audit and Compliance Committee, and the Governance Committee. Each list of candidates was presented for election to the FIFA Congress, each for a term of office of four years which would come into effect immediately.
Justice Mudgal was appointed deputy chairman of the governance committee in May last year during the FIFA Congress in Mexico. - India’s Harpreet Singh wins bronze in Asian Wrestling Championship
Harpreet Singh won a bronze medal in Greco-Roman weight divisions in the Asian Wrestling Championship held at the K.D. Jadhav arena in the Indira Gandhi Stadium Complex in New Delhi. Harpreet won the bronze medal after beating his rival Jun Ji Na of China in 80 kg category. Asian Wrestling Championships are organised every year by the Asian Associated Wrestling Committee (AAWC). - Sakshi Malik, Vinesh Phogat & Divya Kakran win silver in Asian Wrestling Championship
Three Indian women wrestlers Sakshi Malik, Vinesh Phogat and Divya Kakran bagged silver medals in their respective categories in the Asian Wrestling Championship in New Delhi on 13th May after losing out their final bouts.
Rio Olympic bronze medallist Sakshi Malik lost her final bout against Japan’s Risako Kawai in 60kg category. Sakshi wrestled for the first time in women's 60kg category after jumping up the weight division from 58kg. Vinesh Phogat lost the final in women's 55kg category and Divya Kakran in 69 Kg to settle with silver medals. - Paes- Lipsky won Tally Challenger Doubles title
Top-seeded duo of Leander Paes and Scott Lipsky managed to grind out a three-set victory on 30th April in the Tally Challenger Doubles. Lipsky and Paes -- an 18-time Grand Slam champion – brought down third-seeded Maximo Gonazlez and Leonardo Mayer.
- India into top 100 of FIFA rankings for 1st time in 21 years
India has broke into the top 100 for the first time in over two decades in the latest FIFA rankings released on 4th May. For the first time in 21 years and only the sixth time after independence, the national football team has found a place in top-100 of FIFA rankings.
This is India's best-ever FIFA ranking since April 1996 when they were also ranked 100. India's highest FIFA Ranking till date has been 94, achieved in February 1996. India retained 11th spot in AFC. - India slips to 4th position in ICC T20 International team rankings
India have dropped two places to slip to fourth position in the ICC Twenty20 International team rankings following the annual update on May 1.
Having dropped six points, India are now on 118 points, three behind second placed England and third placed Pakistan -- both of whom are on 121 points each. Pakistan joined England on 121 after earning five points. However, they are a rank behind England by a fraction of a point.
England climbed up three places after gaining seven points but are still four points behind table-topper New Zealand, who are on 125 points despite dropping two points. South Africa lost two places to be at fifth spot afterconceding six points, but are a point ahead of Australia.
Australia have swapped places with reigning ICC World Twenty20 champions, the West Indies. West Indies are on 14 points ahead of 2014 winner and eighth-ranked Sri Lanka (95 points, down by four). Bangladesh are ranked 10th on 78 points after gaining four points, while Zimbabwe have retained 12th position.
Australia and the next nine highest-ranked sides on the T20I Team Rankings will qualify automatically for the ICC World Twenty20 2020, which will be staged in Australia. Six sides will qualify from the qualifier to complete the 16-team line-up. - Great Britain wins Sultan Azlan Shah Cup beating Australia
Great Britain beat Australia 4-3 in a thrilling hockey final of the 26th edition of the Azlan Shah Cup at Ipoh, Malaysia. This victory came to Great Britain in the Azlan Shah Cup after 23 years. Australia is the world champions and had won the Azlan Shah title nine times.
India outclassed New Zealand 4-0 to clinch a bronze medal in the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup. India gave an improved display to clinch the bronze after failing to earn a place in the final after a listless show in the last preliminary league encounter against Malaysia. - With "no sufficient evidence", FIFA lifts ban on Messi
FIFA on 5th May overturned Barcelona star Lionel Messi's four-game ban from international matches imposed for swearing at an assistant referee, saying there was not enough evidence to support the stiff punishment
The U-turn is a major boost to Argentina's hopes of reaching next year's World Cup in Russia, with the South Americans struggling in regional qualifying.
FIFA said its appeal committee sided with a challenge filed on Messi's behalf by the Argentine Football Association and lifted "the sanctions imposed on him as a result".
In March the striker was found guilty of "having directed insulting words at an assistant referee" in a World Cup qualifier against Chile which Argentina won 1-0 thanks to a penalty from the Barcelona hitman. Argentine football chief Armando Perez conceded that Messi "made a mistake", but argued that FIFA's sanction was disproportionate.
