  •  Athlete Neeraj Chopra sets world record in IAAF U-20
    Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra created history by becoming the first Indian athlete to become a world champion at any level when he won a gold medal at the U-20 World Championships in Poland. Chopra created a new U-20 world record by throwing the javelin a distance of 86.48m.

    The 18-year-old from Khandra village in Haryana's Panipat district broke the old mark of 84.69 metres held by Latvian Zigismunds Sirmais by nearly two metres.
  • Wrestler Narsingh Yadav fails NADA dope test
    Wrestler Narsingh Yadav has failed a dope test conducted by National Anti-Doping Agency, NADA. The development has cast doubt on his participation in Rio Games.

    National Anti-Doping Director General Navin Agarwal confirmed that Narsingh's 'B' sample also tested positive for a banned steroid and he appeared before a NADA disciplinary panel on 24th July.

    Narsingh was selected for the Rio Olympics in controversial circumstances as double Olympic medallist Sushil Singh had also staked his claim to represent the country in 74kg freestyle.
  • Parveen Rana to replace Narsingh Yadav for Rio Olympics
    India has named Parveen Rana as replacement for dope-tainted wrestler Narsingh Yadav for next month's Rio Olympics.

    United World Wrestling said on its website that it had informed the Wrestling Federation of India that they would be allowed to replace Narsingh in the 74kg freestyle category or give up the qualification spot. The world wrestling body said, the Indian Olympic Association expressed their desire to enter Parveen as their replacement.

    Narsingh had failed a dope test recently and was under provisional suspension, virtually out of the Games.

    Narsingh claims that he is a victim of conspiracy. Narsingh is to face the National Anti-Doping Agency's disciplinary committee today to prove his innocence. Wrestling Federation of India and Olympic medalist Yogeshwar Dutt are among those who have come out in support of the grappler.

    Parveen Rana's selection also comes as a major shock for two-time Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar who was being seen as Narsingh's replacement. Narsingh and Sushil, both, had earlier staked their claim to represent the country in the Games. But, Narsingh was favoured as he had earned the Olympic quota in the World Championships last year. Parveen is regarded as Sushil Kumar’s understudy at Delhi’s Chhattrasal Stadium. He represented the country at the 2014 Asian Games which had Sushil missed due to injury.
  • Rio 2016: Russia's weightlifting team banned
    Russia's weightlifting team has been banned from competing at the Rio Olympics because of doping offences. Two of the eight-strong weightlifting team had already been banned for prior violations, and another four were named in the McLaren report into the issue.
  • Dipika Pallikal Karthik and Saurav Ghosal clinch National Squash tittles
    Dipika Pallikal Karthik dethroned defending champion Joshna Chinappa to regain the women's title in the 73rd Senior National Squash Championship in Mumbai. The men's crown was captured by title holder and top seed Saurav Ghosal, who created history by winning it for the 11th time, defeating fourth seed Harinderpal Singh Sandhu in five hard-fought games.

    Ghosal beat Sandhu after an 88-minute battle to go past RK Narpat Singh's feat of 10 titles, won from 1946 to 1955. World no. 19 Dipika, who was playing in the nationals after a five-year gap when she won in 2011, made it to the tops once again by beating arch-rival Joshna in 43 minutes.
  • Vijender clinches WBO Asia Pacific title
    Current AffairsIndian boxing star Vijender Singh scaled a new high in his ever-soaring professional career as he clinched the WBO Asia Pacific Super Middleweight title with a dominating win over former WBC European champion Kerry Hope.

    The 30-year-old Indian took all 10 rounds to systematically dismantle the 34-year-old Welsh-born Australian and record his seventh straight win in the circuit, a year after turning professional.

    Vijender, who as an amateur held the distinction of being India's first Olympic and World Championships medallist, was hardly pushed despite playing all 10 rounds, and was cheered deliriously by a packed partisan crowd.
  • Warm send-off to India's largest contingent
    Indian Olympic contingent given an official send-off by Indian Olympics Association; A record contingent of 121 athletes, including 54 women, to represent India at the sporting extravaganza in the Brazilian city of Rio De Jeneiro from 05th to 21st August.

    Indian Olympic Association on 19th July felicitated Rio bound Indian athletes and thanked the government for its support.
  • Virat Kohli created another record
    Virat Kohli made his maiden double century in the first test against West Indies, on 22nd July. With this, he became first Indian captain to make a double century abroad. Resuming at an overnight 143, Kohli reached the 200 milestone in 281 balls. With this he beat Mohammad Azharduddin’s long-standing record of 192 against New Zealand scored in February 1990.
  • Andy Murray clinches 2nd Wimbledon title
    Current Affairs Britain's Andy Murray clinched a second Wimbledon title and third Grand Slam crown on 10th July. He downed Milos Raonic of Canada. Murray has added the 2016 trophy to his 2013 triumph at the All England Club and his 2012 US Open title.
  • Portugal wins Euro 2016 football championship
    Portugal lifted the Euro 2016 football championship at Saint-Denis in Paris beating France. For Portugal, this is a win at their first major international title despite losing captain and talisman Cristiano Ronaldo to injury.
  • Justice Mudgal gives scathing report against DDCA officials
    The Delhi High Court-appointed observer Justice Mukul Mudgal has given a scathing report on the Delhi and Districts Cricket Association's functioning during this year's IPL with strong observations against a few senior DDCA office-bearers.

    In his 27-page report on DDCA functioning, Justice Mudgal has criticised that despite having conducted many Tests and other international matches at the Ferozshah Kotla ground, any match assigned to DDCA for reasons best known the office bearers of DDCA is dependent on last minute preparations and permissions.

    However, the most stinging observations were kept for current BCCI and DDCA Vice-president C K Khanna. The report said, Khanna controls large number of proxies and accordingly has strong hold in DDCA. It said, he excels in evading responsibility and claiming credit for an achievement by someone else.

    Mudgal, who also probed the IPL spot-fixing scandal, pointed out at potential Conflict of Interest for Khanna. Justice Mudgal said a restoration of erstwhile glory may not be possible with Mr CK Khanna controlling the affairs of DDCA. While concluding, Mudgal said that the current state of DDCA requires scrutiny of BCCI.
  • India, Ashwin placed second in ICC Test rankings
    In the latest ICC Test rankings released in Dubai on 12th July, India has held the second position while Australia remains on top. Ravichandran Ashwin topped the all-rounders list besides being placed second in bowling.

    In batting, Australia's Steve Smith leads the field and he is followed by Kane Williamson of New Zealand and South Africa's Hashim Amla.
  • Golfers Lahiri, SSP, Aditi to represent India at Olympics
    India's top golfers Anirban Lahiri and SSP Chawrasia will be representing the nation at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro as the sport makes its return to the quadrennial sporting extravaganza after a gap of 112 years.

    Along with the seasoned duo, young Aditi Ashok will represent the country in the women's event.

    With July 11 being the cut-off date for Olympic qualification, Lahiri and Chawrasia have made the grade for Rio as per the International Golf Federations rankings (based on the world rankings) for the Olympic men's competition.

    Reigning Asia No. 1 Anirban Lahiri (world rank 62) and reigning Indian Open champion SSP Chawrasia (world rank 207) were placed 20th and 45th respectively in the International Golf Federation's (IGF) ranking list.
  • GM Harika Dronavalli wins Fide Women’s Grand Prix trophy in China
    India's Grand Master Harika Dronavalli won the Fide Women’s Grand Prix trophy in Chegndu in China on 14th July.

    Harika, playing with white against Russia's Olga Girya, had to dig deep into her reservoir to pull off the much-needed draw to win the title, her maiden career GP title. Harika finished on 7 points in the round robin tournament featuring the world’s top 12 players to be crowned the champion.
  • Misbah becomes oldest Test centurion in 82 years
    Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq became the oldest player to score a Test century for 82 years when he reached three figures against England at Lord's on 14th July. New his age is 42 years. Not since England's Patsy Hendren made a century against Australia aged 45 at Manchester's Old Trafford ground back in 1934 had an older player scored a Test hundred.

    Remarkably, this was also Misbah's first Test anywhere in England, with selection decisions having kept him out of previous tours.
  • India jumps 11 places to 152nd in football rankings
    Riding on their back-to-back wins over Laos last month, India made a big leap of 11 places to occupy 152nd spot in the latest world football rankings issued by FIFA. India beat Laos 6-1 and 1-0 in the home and away play-off matches to make it to the 2019 Asian Cup qualifying tournament. India is the fourth best positive mover among the Asian countries this month after Tajikistan (up 19 places to 145th), Yemen (up 16 places to 160th) and Turkmenistan (up 14 places to 120th).

    Iran (39th) remains Asia's number one ranked team, followed by Korea Republic (48th), Uzbekistan (56th), Japan (57th) and Australia (59th).

    Overall, Argentina remains on top, despite losing to Chile in the Copa America Centenario summit clash.

    Belgium,Colombia, Germany and Chile retained their places at second, third, fourth and fifth while UEFA Euro 2016 champions Portugal moved up two places to be at sixth.

    Euro losing finalists France are at seven, followed by former world champions Spain, Brazil and Italy in the top 10.

    New Zealand emerged as the month's biggest climbers, moving up a whopping 54 places to 93rd on the back of an OFC Nations Cup victory that saw the All Whites qualify for the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup and furthered their FIFA World Cup qualifying ambitions.
  • Sports Ministry announces Rs 10 lakh grant for Shahid
    The Union Sports Minister Dr Jitendra Singh announced a grant of Rs 10 lakh for ailing Olympic gold medallist Mohammed Shahid, who is undergoing treatment for serious liver and kidney ailment at Medanta Medicity in Gurgaon.

    Known for his artistic stickwork, Shahid was a member of the V Baskaran led Indian team that won its last gold medal at the 1980 Moscow Olympics. Shahid was also a part of the team that won silver at the Delhi Asiad in 1982 and bronze in the Seoul Asiad in 1986.
  • Niranjan wins eight medals in IWAS World Games
    Bengaluru para swimmer Niranjan Mukundan has won eight medals, including three golds, at the recently-concluded IWAS (International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports) U-23 World Games in Prague, Czech Republic.

    Niranjan bagged gold medals in 200m freestyle, 50m butterfly and 50m breaststroke, silver in 100m fly and 50m freestyle, and bronze in 100m freestyle, 100m breaststroke and 100m backstroke events.
  • Serena William wins Wimbledon Women's SinglesCurrent Affairs
    Six times champion Serena Williams clinched the 22nd Grand Slam singles title of her career on 9th July, after defeating Germany's Angelique Kerber in the Wimbledon women's singles final in London.

    In the process, the 34-year-old American equalled the Open Era record of Steffi Graf for the highest number of singles majors. Serena had reached her ninth Wimbledon singles final by beating unseeded Russian, Elena Vesnina.

    Serena and her sister Venus Williams will also compete in the women's doubles final later tonight when they take on the pair of Hungary's Timea Babos and Kazakhstan's Yaroslava Shvedova.
