National Youth Athletics Meet: Haryana beat Kerala to win team championship
Haryana beat arch rivals Kerala after six years to win the team championship at the National Youth Athletics Meet, which concluded at G.M.C. Balayogi Stadium in Hyderabad.
Haryana emerged champions with overall 166.5 points including girls and boys performance. Kerala, finished as runners-up managing 134.75 points.
However, Kerala retained the team crown for girls with 100 points, while Haryana boys topped with 108.5 points at the end of the three day meet.
Javelin throw player Damneet Singh of Punjab has been declared the best Athlete in boys category while in girls Aparna Roy of who win 100m hurdles race awarded as the best.
India wins 16 medals at US Open karate Championship
India finished with three gold two silver and 11 bronze medals at the US Open Karate Championship held in Las Vegas.
Shaifali Agarwal, Abhishek Sengupta won a gold medal, a silver in two different individual events. India also won a gold medal in the team event. The Indian team was led by Sensei Yashpal Singh Kalsi. The Other members of the Indian contingent were Abhishek Sengupta, Rantej Singh, Harcharan Singh Chowhan and Shaifali Agarwal.
Shot putter Manpreet wins gold with national record
Indian shot putter Manpreet Kaur clinches gold medal in the first leg of the Asian Grand Prix Athletics Meet in China; Creates a new national record with a best throw of 18.86 metres; Qualifies for the IAAF World Championships to be held in August in London.
Indian shot putter Manpreet Kaur clinched a gold in the first leg of the Asian Grand Prix Athletics Meet with a national record and world season-leading effort in China.
Manpreet came up with a best throw of 18.86m in the season-opening international event for the Indians, which was nearly one meter more than her earlier national record of 17.96m that she had set in 2015.
B Sai Praneeth won maiden Super Series title in Singapore
Sai Praneeth has won the title match of Men's singles at Singapore Open Badminton beating his compatriot Kidambi Srikanth.
In the Singapore Open Badminton tournament, T Y Tai has won the Women Singles title beating Carolina Marin.
In the Mens doubles event, the pair of M Boe and C Mogensen defeated the J Li and Y Liu
In the Womens doubles, the pair of K R Juhl and C Pedersen beat the pair of M Matsutomo and A Takahashi.
In the Mixed Doubles, the K. Lu and Y Huang duo defeated the duo of P Dechapol and S Teiratennachal.
PV Sindhu moves to 3rd position in world ranking
Five Indian shuttlers were upgraded in the latest BWF rankings released on 20th April. Rio Olympics silver medallist P.V. Sindhu moved to number 3.
Slipping to number five, Sindhu earned two spots in the latest ranking on the basis of making the quarterfinals of the recently concluded Singapore Open Super Series. London Olympics bronze medallist Saina Nehwal also jumped up a place to be ranked eighth.
In the men's singles, Ajay Jayaram moved a place to 13th position to remain as the highest-ranked Indian. Kidambi Srikanth and B Sai Praneeth both jumped as many as eight positions each. Srikanth is now placed at 21st and Praneeth at 22nd position.
Indian Olympic Association grants affiliation to Boxing Federation of India
The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has granted affiliation to the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) after months of discussions. The affiliation was informed via letter to the BFI President on 9th April.
The now resolved issue started in September last year when IOA had initially refused to grant recognition to BFI stating that it still considered the now-defunct Indian Amateur Boxing Federation as the official national body for the sport. It later referred the matter to the affiliation committee following persistent requests from the BFI.
Pankaj Advani wins Asian Billiards Championship title
Sixteen-time world champion Pankaj Advani won his sixth Asian Billiards title and seventh overall Asian championship. He defeated his compatriot Sourav Kothari in the final of the Asian Billiards Championship in Chandigarh.

P V Sindhu on 2nd April defeated Carolina Marin of Spain to lift her maiden India Open Super Series title.
Leander Paes wins first title of season in Challenger tournament
Leander Paes on 2nd April won his first title of the season, combining with Canadian Adil Shamasdin to lift the Leon Challenger Tour tennis tournament's men's doubles trophy after a straight-set win in Mexico.
Paes and Shamasdin defeated Luca Margaroli (Switzerland) and Caro Zampieri (Brazil) in the title clash at the hard court event. With this win, Paes clinched his 20th ATP Challenger title. Paes has now won at least one title every year for the past 26 years.
Federer wins Miami Open, beats Nadal in straight sets
Roger Federer won his third major title in the calendar year 2017, by beating Nadal at Miami Open Men’s singles finals.
WADA ranked India 3rd in its doping chart
India has been ranked third for the third year in a row in a doping violation report published by World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) for 2015 with 117 athletes from the country being punished after testing positive for banned substances.
India followed Russian Federation (176) and Italy (129) at third spot in the doping violation chart released by the WADA, the same position as in the reports of 2013 and 2014. This is the first set of Anti-Doping Rule Violation statistics under the revised WADA Code and third such report in its history since 2013.
The worrying sign for India is that the number of dope offenders has been increasing in the last three years. India had 91 and 96 Anti-doping Rule Violations (ADRVs) in 2013 and 2014 respectively. The World Anti-Doping Agency is a foundation initiated by the International Olympic Committee based in Canada to promote, coordinate and monitor the fight against drugs in sports.
Vijay Goel approves appointment of Foreign Coaches in Athletics
Sports Minister Vijay Goel has approved appointment of two foreign coaches and two support staff for athletics. Mr. Goel said appointments Dave Smith, Galina P. Bukharina, Dmitry Kislev and Elmira Kisleva have been made upto 2020 Olympics and they will be subject to performance review annually.
He said his ministry is committed to provide best possible help and support, sports infrastructure and equipments to athletes. These appointments were recommended by the Foreign Coach Selection committee under the Chairmanship of Secretary, Sports.
